  1. Hey all - I've only played once in the past month or so due to eyesight issues and now eye surgery.  I have been hitting balls into the net and putting to get used to the Sacks Parente putter that I am testing.  My second surgery is scheduled for next week and I intend to start playing again in earnest the weekend of Dec. 8/9.  I'm anxious to see what it will be like playing golf without needing glasses.  I'm already able to see distances with just the one eye done so the prospects are extremely exciting.  I have ordered a pair of golf sunglasses - my regular glasses transitioned to sunglasses but I suspect this will take some getting used to and I'm truly wondering how 20/20 will impact my ability to read greens, experience distances, see shots land, stuff I have struggled with for some time now.

Additionally, I've been reflecting upon what components made me a very good golfer in the past.  In the end I would say the key to my golf game was always consistency - pull driver or whatever club I was going to hit off the tee, hit it in play, pull my iron for the approach shot, hit it in the middle of the green, two putt and move on - I was always a par making machine.

The Srixon MK 5's have not worked out for me.  Even though the shaft is the same weight is my Wilson D7 forged the swing weight is much lighter, I can't feel the head at all, it's a big issue. Given what brought me success in the past I'm actually questioning the Player's Distance category and seriously considering moving back into the game improvement category - I've never been a great iron player, not one to work the ball with my irons at all quite honestly - just try to hit it straight and high or occasionally low under the wind when necessary.  I'm also not a high spin player with those clubs so middle of the green works.

Other than trap shots I've always had a very good short game and need to get back to that.  Wedge has become a huge problem for me this year.  I can't seem to find one that I really like.  Currently I have SCORs in the bag because I'm good with them around the green but I'm very inconsistent on full and part shots with whatever wedge I'm gaming at the time, skulls, chunks, you name it I'm doing it.  I don't know if its an eyesight thing but the more I miss the harder it gets.  I'm going to need to get in some significant practice with those clubs once I get back to playing.

Finally where I play is a point of contention for me.  I like my course but the club is expensive, I don't have a lot of friends there and they have tightened the screws on the number of times that guests, exactly the people whom I like to play with, can play the course.  I'm on the waiting list at a different club - it's not as nice but its not chopped liver either (used to host an LPGA event.)  The set of tees that they play their games from fit my game far better than where I'm at currently and it is a bit closer to my house.

I've always gotten my enjoyment from golf out of being a good player.  Being an okay player is not as appealing to me.  I want to get back to being good again and I think that best way to tackle that is to focus on doing what I do best and steering away from my weaknesses rather than constantly chasing after those.  Consistency has always been my best attribute so I'm going for that again.

How about you?  Do you ever assess your game this way?

  2. So I have gotten two practice sessions and a round in on Sunday with my putter - no real testing as I'm getting a feel for it.  I did not hit the ball well at all on Sunday - but my speed was outstanding including the one putt that I had from well off of a green - what I didn't get a good feel for was mid range putts - I only had one the entire round -

Cataract surgery tomorrow - I'm hoping to get out on Sunday to practice - at least.

... Pretty common in the area's I have lived in. PGA SS, Golf Galaxy and several years back Golfsmith were within one block of each other. I do like GG because I can use them with my Dicks CC Rewards certificates but their insistence on tying down all their woods so you can't see them at address is beyond annoying. Only golf store I have visited that does this. Sorry to see your GG close because competition is always a good thing. Used equipment prices especially are so much higher when there isn't any competition.

Oh I've seen them a block apart for sure -

I'm simply surprised that they are in the same shopping center.  And yes, bottom line I'm sorry that this has happened to you.  Competition is always good, IMO.

The packaging is really sharp, elegant actually. Putter and putter cover were secured and a slimmer pistol grip was included, as promised.

The first thing that our fitter Aki asked me to do when I took the putter out was to feel the weight of the head and check how much closer the balance point was to the head than my current gamer. So I did:

IMG_3313.jpeg.c4770897b3e442ca9e6fcdacc135b8a3.jpegIMG_3316.jpeg.3167955eb9756347dd6d1a636ae6f6d4.jpegMy wife, who was taking the pictures, remarked at the difference. Not seen is how difficult it was to balance my gamer and how the Saks Parente Duke - 91 balanced instantly as if my finger had a magnet in it.  I think the ultra low balance point is evident here!

In keeping with the elegant theme - the SP ball marker is impressive:

IMG_3324.jpeg.38fc41bd6a0776f3365827b6a50cc937.jpegI also like the Veni, Vidi, Vici (I came, I saw, I conquered) quote that is conspicuous on a number of the putter’s components.

IMG_3321.jpeg.04c0854c99a677f118a24013576ddd9a.jpegI’m not a fan of the cover though. Black and gold is sharp but it doesn’t fit securely. It could be because of the putter style (it really does look like it’s namesake NFL football.)

IMG_3317.jpeg.07501f164c47ba116dfeff07f72284ed.jpegI will be anxious to see if I have issues with it falling off during play particularly when I’m riding.

IMG_3318.jpeg.2075f4cd0153bec323616c5905e50461.jpegWhat do you all think of it?

I'm anxious to see if this truly is the only putter that actually improves my stroke.  Because if it does, it may improve yours also.  I did get it on the practice green yesterday for a bit and will play tomorrow - yes I know I said I wasn't playing until after my eye surgeries but I'm really Jonesing for a round of golf and I was able to line up a couple of friends who don't mind being my seeing eye dogs. 🙂

  5. IMG_3303.jpeg.94d4eea3edace5f3bb6f0d56a821a090.jpegSo my wise guy son came over last night while I was at work and noticed this package on the front porch. I didn’t get home until 9.  Exhausted after a 14 hour work day I didn’t ask and she didn’t tell.

Went to work today that included a funeral for a coworker’s dad at a church around the corner from my club and shut in visits. Had enough time to have lunch and visit the putting green at the club I between so went to the green.

Our greens are spectacular and this one was ridiculous. I was on the phone with my wife telling her I was there when she said, “Oh I forgot to tell you that John hid your new putter on top of the hutch.”

Fortunately for him I’m working a half day tomorrow. I will head back to the club and unveil some pictures then.

    Check back tomorrow evening ….

  6. We are in that hurry up and wait period - 😞

Aki did make some recommendation about my putting stroke so I’m working on those while waiting for My putters arrival. For me the focus is on a smooth pendulum stroke.  I’m trying to avoid the inside then outward loop. According to Aki I have the potential to be better than 50/50 from 8 feet (your average.) This is because ihave a good stroke and play the same private course most of the time. I know the greens very well so it’s a matter of good alignment and a good stroke.

I really rolled the ball well on the practice green today. It only took 24 putts to hole 10 in a row from 3 feet and my speed control and ability to hole some longer putts was great. I only had one pull in all the putts that I hit and left none short.

  7. CrashChris - welcome to the forums!  I also live in the area, about an hour South of where you will be at.  I might be the odd man out in that I am not a big fan of TPC Tampa.  I like the course, can't stand and I really mean I can't stand the pace of play.  In fact, I've given up trying to play there because of it and frankly it would be such an easy fix - typically the front nine moves but then groups stop to get something to eat or drink at the turn and that along with lots of water on the back slows things to a crawl.  I almost always end up with a tight back when I play there.

Okay enough venting - there are so many good courses that it's hard to hit them all - Count me in on the Foxhollow recommendation, Innisbrook is a bit of a drive but it has 4 great courses - Saddlebrook is an old school layout that would be close to you, it has two courses, I saw Dunedin CC mentioned, not always in the best of shape but it is a Donald Ross classic.   I'd certainly enjoy playing with you if you didn't mind traveling an hour or so - I belong to a private club so it's not as crowded as the resort courses you'd probably play - I'm tied up through Christmas but on vacation after that.  I stay at a timeshare the week you are here but it's only 20 minutes from my club and I'd want to play during that week.  You could look me up as we get closer to your visit and I'd enjoy arranging for us to play a round.  There are also some other golfers in the area - I'm just noticing that Rosey31 is - you could hit me up too if you wanted and I'd get you out on Bayou (that's my club) - I'm having Cataract surgery in a couple of weeks but once I've recovered from that I'd love to get out with you, too.

  8. I've done this for the PGA tournament at Whistling Straits and also for a couple of Hooter's tour events.  There will be training, just do what you're told, don't bother the players and enjoy the experience.  It's a long day regardless of what they have you do so be sure to hydrate, wear sunscreen, all that fun stuff.

I was a driver from the airport for the PGA but got free tickets to the event when I wasn't on duty plus a free round at one of the sister courses every time I worked.

    Congrats and enjoy

  9. I’m going to assume lessons are off the table. So for drills something, like around the world or even simpler find a flat spot and make 10 in a row from three feet then get to where it’s four feet.

Once you’ve done that move to speed control which can be done from the middle of the practice green rolling putts just onto the fringe or if you have a hilly practice green two balls down hill to a spot two balls back up hill to the spot you putted down from.

Add in three balls tossed randomly off the green and play them all the way out to a pin, repeat until you can make 10 up and downs in a row. Throw in a little reward for yourself if you successfully complete the drills.

Thats worked for me my entire golfing life.

    Good luck

Congrats to the testers. I hope someone is going with the Series 39.

Thanks - don't know if you caught it from some of the intros but the fitter will be suggesting what putter we should use based on our time spent with him.  I've never had that experience before.  I've been fit for putter but it's always been a model that I've selected myself.  This approach will be interesting.  It makes sense when you think about it -

My comments were misleading.  I own that.  However, I was not really commenting on sponsor exemptions as much as recent articles advocating for LPGA players to be given PGA Tour status based on their LPGA Tour performance.

In regard to Lexi, she beat no one.  Her score was lower than some at the cut but the bottom line is that score was based on two rounds.  Walking and playing 7000 yards over four consecutive days is the measurement for a single tournament.  Qualifying for the PGA Tour would include performance/success against the field over numerous tournaments.

my comments are/were not about Lexi but more so about the possibility of creating a gender neutral tour were ALL members of the tour must go through the same gauntlet.

So noted - for the purpose of my argument with my mini tour friends though she did beat people - they keep trying to say there is no way she beats them in a round ever.  That's BS of course.

I had not seen any of those articles and didn't notice it in your original post.  You could in theory earn your way onto the tour through a sponsors exemption - finishing low enough in a tournament gets you into the next one, etc., etc.  It rarely happens but I think it has.  I know it's happen through Monday qualifying.  It's very difficult though and extremely doubtful that an LPGA player would succeed in doing it.  in the end the distance gap is too much to conquer week after week.  I enjoy the tournament that the DP tour has where they have players from both of their tours playing the same course at the same time.  It would be nice to have one of those on the PGA tour and a great boost to the women's game.

That kind of was my end point and supports my argument. LPGA successful should not be a pathway to earn PGATour status.  Sponsor exemptions can be given to anyone for a single tournament which I’m still not a big fan of.  I understand the math but that doesn’t mean I agree with it.  Steph Curry brings attention to a given event but he also takes up a slot that I (not really) could be given.  While he is a good golfer he (and others) are given a slot based on their celebrity status.  Can you imagine Brad Pitt playing as the starting linebacker for the rams simply because he is Brad Pitt?   😊

    I agree with this.

  12. While I appreciate your opinion, I disagree with you on sponsor’s exemptions. They exist for most tournaments, the sponsor is paying huge bucks as a tournament host and a part of what they get is the right to hand out exemptions to whom do ever they please.  It’s one way that people “earn” a spot in a tour event. Sometimes those exemptions go to local high school or college kids BTW.

As to the PGA tour bring open to women on a regular basis wouldn't this open up a huge can of worms? Would men be allowed to qualify for LPGA events then? It’s a tricky matter I think.

Finally while she missed the cut Lexi did beat a number of accomplished PGA players and tied Emilio Grillo for 2 rounds. He’s ranked number 35 in the world. I have an ongoing argument with a couple of mini tour guys who think they’d never loose to a woman on a course that was over 7.000 yards long.

    Think again…
