  1. Think they will be good to by next Thursday? When I called them last week, they anticipated having both courses open by the 21st (tomorrow). I hope that's the case.

Should be good.  We've played a couple of other courses in the area and the sand traps on each were absolutely the only issues.  No flooding damage, courses in good shape.  The Valley and Stadium are opening tomorrow and I'll give you a report from our game on Friday.

  2. Home course tpc valley still closed due to Irma, so we played another local course.  Really good shape except for a few sand traps that they hadn't got to yet.  Shot a 42-41/83, best score in a while.  Some good ball striking, chipping generally good, putting fairly good.  18, had a chance to finish with 5 straight pars.  But the drive was pushed right, leaving me in the rough 175 out (would have been 130ish with any sort of decent drive).  Proceeded to hit about the best six iron I have ever hit, high, right over the pin--but, even thought just after contact that this is going to be too long.  Sure enough, yard or so off the back of the green. Slightly bladed the chip to 5 ft left and kind of jabbed at the putt for a bogey.  But feel pretty good about the finish and that final six iron.

  3. So Irma is supposed to hit us full force Monday am.  People have already started evacuating.  Our regular Friday game is still on, supposed to be a nice, relatively cool (low 80s) day.  But the TPC wants to send employees home early because we're under voluntary evacuation orders already.  So they said everyone is going off on a 9 am shotgun.  Ok, we can live with that.  Then, the pro shop said, oh, by the way, everyone is going off on the Stadium!!!!  We'll take that, cart fees only!!   Should be fun!!  Might be a while before golf returns to normal after Irma passes through.

  4. Don't you love symmetry??  Not.  Friday, I shot a good front nine 39 and a not so good back nine 48.  Yesterday, same course, same conditions, I shot a not so good front nine 48 and a good back nine 39.  Same 87, but completely different rounds.  Couldn't get anything going yesterday until my re tee on the long par 3 11th after hitting the first into the water (water juts in after the tee).  Then, out of nowhere, I hit a great 4 iron to 10 feet from 195, then par, birdie, birdie, bogie, bogie, par and par.

At least those last seven holes will keep me coming back!

The consistent inconsistency continues!  Played at The Palencia Club north of St Augustine yesterday (tournament at the Valley).  Same 87, same variance between nines, though a slightly less extreme 46/41.  At least I'm finishing better than I start the last couple of rounds.

Back on the Valley Friday, probably the last day of golf for a bit since the noon hurricane track forecast still has the eye going right over us Monday afternoon!  Supposed to play Oak Marsh on Amelia Island on Tuesday (of Big Break fame), but I'm guessing that won't happen!

  5. 6. Good luck Jax. I bet you will get iron shots jumping off the face

Well, worked with the driver, not so much the irons.  9th and 10th holes were the problem in spades.  On 9, hit a good drive right down the middle.  9 iron into green from 140.  Hit it real solid, pin high--but 30 yds left.  Next hole, real long drive, right side of fairway.  Gap wedge from 115, ALSO 30 yds left!  Same on next hole, par 3, well struck 8 iron 20 yds left.  I did manage not to do that rest of round.  My living room swing analysis today is that I was taking the club away too far back to the inside with the irons (a recurring fault of mine), causing me to whip the club around to the left regardless of how much I tried to keep the right hip stable.  Living room swing finally feels right with a more straight back takeaway and the tips mentioned above.  Will report again after tomorrow!

  7. By early extension I assume you mean the old humping the barrel thing? Im sure there's tons of drills out there to stay in your posture but the easiest is setting your bag or alignment stick up against your backside and still feeling it there through transition. The other feeling (not really a drill) I like for this is to really feel yourself pressuring the ground through your lead foot as you start down. No way to hump forward if you're pressing down

Owe you some thanks, GMan--I've been struggling with this the last two/three weeks and have been unable to really fix it.  I know the backside drill but it wasn't getting me totally out of the funk.  But your thought of pressuring the ground with the lead foot seems to be the ticket.  Had a range session today and I was able to keep the spine angle much better with this thought.  I've heard that one before, but as with all of the tips out there, it takes getting reminded of them occasionally.  Playing tomorrow, so I'll see if it's more than a one day fix!

  8. I'm an impulse buyer frequently.  But don't buy frequently.  So, its been well over a year since my last purchase.  I read Tony's review of the new Ping Driver.  Love my current Ping Driver, the G30.  So, after golf last Friday, went and ordered the new Ping.  Didn't even try a swing (would have been useless that day, post round my back stiffens up so test swings wouldn't have shown a thing).  But my current Ping driver was analyzed post-purchase and fitter said wouldn't change a thing, so figure same specs on the new should be pretty close!  Supposed to arrive a week from tomorrow!  Loved the looks of the new one.

Just started watching Game of Thrones (after the Time magazine article that explained things--tried watching a few years ago and never got the plot and characters straight)

  10. Playing the Stadium today (Sunday).  The TPC gave our weekend group a special accommodation to have this week's game on the Stadium at a nominal rate!  Later tee time, so have to hope the late afternoon pop up storms don't interfere!

  11. Shot a 43-40/83 today in one of my better ball striking rounds.  Just couldn't sink a putt.  We counted 7 lip outs or edges grazed.  Had a lesson yesterday and without any practice except for the pre-round range, I was able to incorporate the focus of the lesson quite successfully and with great results, particularly with the long irons and wedges.  Two kick-in birdies, and also had GIRs in proximity to the hole on the 1 through 5 handicap holes.  Trending down!

  12. Good round today that could have been great.  Have been real confident in the swing, particularly the irons, lately.  We had our first heavy rain in 3 months last night so it was cart paths only. Plus had the strong post-front breezes.  15 to 20 mph out of the west all day long.  But front nine was great.  7 pars, one bogie, one double (damn balloon drive into the wind that hit the car path and bounced 6 inches ob). Continued for first two four holes of back nine. Then with five holes into the teeth of the increasingly strong wind, started trying to adjust the swing to compensate for the wind.  Not a good move.  Lost the rhythm, just kind of meh all the way in.  One water ball double and the rest scrambling bogies.  Think the cart paths only also got to me (I'm out of shape 'cause of tax season).  End result, though, 39-44/83 for a tie for third best round of the year!

  13. Very frustrating day.  Was hitting my irons beautifully.  When I could, tee shot was only working half the time.  And didn't make a putt all day.  Good thing, only one double bogie (I usually have 3 or 4 or more, even on good days), bad thing, only 3 pars.  Feeling really good about the irons though, keeping my new found distance (club to club and a half longer) and getting much more accurate.  Playing again tomorrow, we're having the longest stretch of absolute perfect golf weather I can remember.  High of 80, sunny, light winds.

Next day, same course, same conditions.  Same Driver results, but only five or so 'quality' strikes with the irons, rest were just a bit off, with one awful. But putting and short game was much better, so shot 44/42 86.  3 doubles, 7 pars.  Wish the elements would come together in the same round more often.  Lately its been drive well, rest 'meh', flush irons, rest 'meh', good short game, rest 'meh'.  Scores are best when its the short game on, however.

  15. Played today, great weather, although a bit cool to start.  Almost a 30 degree difference from tee off to finish (42 to 70), but sunny and no wind, so very pleasant throughout.  Shot a 41/43 84, for my second best round in the last 7 months.  But oh, while some parts were good, it could have been so much better.  Three birdies, only second time I've ever done that.  Driver was best it's ever been (after an almost worst its ever been last Friday).  But wedges and chipping were almost a 'worst they've ever been'.  Starting with the 8th hole, I had approaches from less than 105 on 8,9,10,12,13,15 and 17.  Went pull (bog), chunk (bog), chunk (bog), fan and bad chip (double), lucky chunk than ran a bit for birdie, chunk (bog) and eagle chip and three putt bog.  Mind you, with my normal driver distance, only on 12, 15 and 17 would I normally have a shot under 140 yds.  So I was pounding the ball without really trying (and without really knowing why it was any different than last Friday).  Two drives 260+ and two 270+ and my normal max is 250, rarely achieved (no wind today, again).  Grip and swing change is working when I do it right, but certainly wasn't doing it right on the short irons today after the 7th hole.

But even thought it should have been so much better, the 3 birdies, 3 doubles was a whole lot more palatable than last Fridays 2 pars and 10 doubles.

  16. So, update on my post-lesson progress (or lack thereof). Next round after my 'found-the-secret-of golf' 79 was the type of round I had expected after a big change lesson. 79 on Tuesday, 98 on Friday. No clue what I was doing. Followed by a couldn't putt 93 with a teeny bit better ball striking, then a ghastly 97 where every shot was a duck hook or a manufactured punch. Then today, all of a sudden, had the secret again! A 41/44 85 with a couple of brain fart drives and totally average putting (i.e., should have been much better). But in general, the ball-striking was spot on. Did hit one drive that was totally beyond my general capabilities. A center of the club, pure slight draw, measured on the GPS at 274, a good 30 yds farther than my previous best drive on that hole (I know the drain where the previous one ended up). Generally, my max, absolute best drives are around 250ish. Wish I knew what magic I found on that one. All-in-all, given the absolutely perfect weather, a very good day.

  17. I just read this thread for the first time, and in its entirety. Great job guys! I have one thing I'd like the reviewers to comment on. It appears that all of the reviewed models were counterbalanced. It is also unclear whether the reviewers' current models were CB. I switched to CB after I reviewed the TM Ghost Spider putter here on MGS a few years ago. To me, there is a HUGE difference between CB and non-CB putters, particularly on the longer putts. To me, it requires a different stroke. I'm a big fan of it, but I've noticed that I really can't switch between a CB and non-CB putter and have any distance control. Was the counterbalancing a significant factor for any of the reviewers? Or was it pretty much of a non-factor?

I have noticed that in the past few months, there have been far fewer CB models in the stores than there were after a burst of popularity a couple of years ago.

  18. Haven't posted in this thread for ages. For good reason, no rounds worth posting about since end of May. Broke my foot in early June, two month layoff, came back and lousy, lousy golf since. The GolfTec lessons were helping me hit lots of quality shots, but couldn't get rid of the round killing shots and the short game and putting were also pretty lousy. Only 6 rounds out of 30 after my return in August were in the 80s and then just barely. Index ballooned from 11.8 to 16.4. December's rounds were 99,92,96,94,93,94. 7 to 10 doubles a round.

Switched instructors in early Dec., to a local guy who works with several Tour players. First lesson, changed my right hand grip completely, told me to come back in 4 weeks after I got comfortable with it. Had the next lesson on Wednesday. Two significant changes, one on takeaway, other on setup. Hit one practice bucket on Thursday to try to get a feel for the changes.

Played yesterday in our regular game on the Valley, expecting nothing out of the round, as rounds after lessons tend to be terrible. Well, bogied the first two holes, then egad! So that's what a golf swing is supposed to feel like! All of a sudden, I was hitting good shot after good shot. Parred the next seven holes with a birdie tossed in for a 37 on the front! Slowed down a bit on the tougher back, tugged a couple, left one in the sand and hit a couple of dead solid perfect shots over the green. But managed to finish par/birdie for a 42 and a 79 for the round!

I hadn't broke 80 this century! Absolutely no mishits after the second hole. The lesson really clicked! I'm back to being stoked about golf! Hope it continues...
