  1. TPC Valley is still closed for aeration, so we played the Lagoon Course at Ponte Vedra Inn & Club (Yes, as hotsy-totsy as it sounds).  It's a par 70, older Florida style track in superb condition and it on the Ocean side of A1A and a lot more breezy that we're used to.  It's got a 565 yd par 5 that was into a two club wind today!  All that being said, my very uncharacteristic good ball striking continued today!  Had my very first ever 3 birdie day in 40 years of playing golf.  Ended up with an 82 including a double on the last hole where I just ran out of gas.  The windy conditions on a strange course cost me a few strokes but over all very pleased with the ball striking.  So, since I incorporated a swing tip on my backswing and a putting lesson at the same time, I've gone 84, 84 and 82, all of which could have been better.  Liking the trend right now.

  2. Another great weather day, we played offsite at another local country club 'cause Valley is closed for a few days for aeration.  Hiidden Hills had aerated a couple of weeks ago and unfortunately their greens haven't come back very good yet.  Putting was very problematic all day.  GIRs on first two holes and two three putts.  Then three holes of a swing fart, a bad layup choice and a chip chunk led to three consecutive doubles.  After that, next 13 holes four over par with two birdies.  Best ball-striking round of recent memory (even on the double bogie holes, the shots were well struck).  Ended up 45/39 84.  Very pleased, and was getting stronger at the end, with two birdies on last three holes.  Last hole, 371 yds, smoked the drive and caught fairway downslope, leaving a 100 little wedge.  Lessons are really working!

  3. I heard that it was beautiful on your side of the state. We've transitioned into summer. Very humid with a pop up thunderstorm the last four afternoons. Not enough rain to effect play or course playability yet.

Yeah, good time of year around here.  Can you say 6 weeks of virtually perfect weather, one day of all day rain.   Only two pop up days so far.  Humidity thankfully absent so far.  Another CofC day forecast for tomorrow for my next round!

  4. Chamber of Commerce day on the course this am.  Perfect weather, low humidity, mid-80s, slight breeze.  Memorial day, so very little play on the course.  We saw NO ONE, before or after us, the whole round.  Shot a 42/42 84.  Ball striking was good, putting was very good after the first 5 holes as I incorporated the changes from my first ever putting lesson last Friday.  Still have the 3 or 4 holes of swing fart double bogies, but getting better.  HC revision coming tomorrow should be my lowest index in 15 years I'm guessing!

  5. Short day today. Started on #2 in a shotgun start and my elbow went on the second shot. Hit three more full shots with three numb fingers on my right hand and called it a day. Very disappointed to say the least.

OUCH!  Feel your pain!  Get well.

  6. We, too, had perfect weather today--sunny, light breezes, low eighties.  Shot a 42/45 87.  Good news was that I reduced the putts to 30 (from 38 each of the last two rounds).  Driver was great through 15 holes, irons were basically off all day.  Back nine, we were held up by a corporate scramble outing. 1:40 for first nine, 2:35 for the second.  Felt it definitely affected the ball-striking.  First, the back started stiffening up with the constant waiting.  Second, my mind got working about swing tweaks, fixes.  Not a good thing.

  7. Went for another lesson Thursday.  That usually spells disaster for the next round, particularly when no range time in between.  But in this lesson, we identified what I had gotten away from the last few weeks in my swing rebuild (after 10 straight rounds in the mid to low 80s, I've had 6 straight 90+).  Really had gotten off my left side.

Long story short, it worked!  Shot a 42/43 85.  Really solid ball striking, 11 GIRs.  Could been an awesome round, but 38 putts again, including FIVE, count 'em, FIVE three putts (so that's 38 putts in two consecutive rounds).  That, plus losing my backswing on two holes for a triple and a double (after parring 7 of 9 previous holes), kept me from a real good score.

Great lesson result.  And guess what?  I've scheduled a putting lesson for next Friday!

  8. Aw the one that keeps you coming back!!!!!

Jax is the Stadium closed now and if so when does it reopen?  I may be heading up your way Memorial Day weekend if you wanted to play on the Naval base in Kingsland.

Yes, they had the bulldozers going strong yesterday.  Should open again in October or so.

Sounds good on Kingsland, I'll be around!

  9. Scored terrible yesterday, but overall it was a very fun and enjoyable day.  One of regulars has for years  provided lodging for junior players at the junior players championship at the TPC and has sponsored some of them as they start their pro careers.  One of his current "sponsorees", was in town and was looking for a game, so he played with us in our Tuesday game yesterday.  I jiggled the foursomes so that he was with a couple of the guys who can play the blue tees (and I stuck myself in there as well).

It was a real pleasure playing with someone who has that much talent.  He's a 20 year old aussie and has a build very similar to Rickie.  And hits it almost like Rickie.  Measured two of his drives at 304 and 309.  He birdied the first five holes and finished with a six under 66.  (albeit from 6,500 yds).

I started out great, piped my drive 261 (awesome for me).  But three putted the first hole (and many more).  38 putts for the day.  Good putts just missed, but there were a whole lot of bad putts.

I was working on the next step on my swing remake (better rotation of the hips on the downswing).  First round of that.  Some great results, but some really bad shots when I didn't get the timing right.  I will boast that for the first time ever (10 years) on the TPC Valley course I reached #8 par 5 in two.  Great drive and great 5 wood to pin high, 20 ft (of course, I missed the eagle putt).  Great thing is, this was from the blue tees, almost 20 yrds longer than the whites, and I had never made it from the whites.  495 yds in two shots was completely awesome for me, made up for all the bad shots and gosh awful putting.

  10. I hate the opposite where you play a good round and look at the scorecard and it was a bloodbath.

Yeah, I know what you mean.  Two weeks ago I had a couple of rounds where I struck the ball better and more consistently than I ever have done before, and shot 84s, only 2/4 strokes better than this weeks "horrible" rounds.  Felt I left 6-8 strokes on the course that I could have easily made if I had played my short game as I know I can.

  11. I was really out of sequence on my swing today.  And my putting (brought out the old putter to teach the new one a lesson--new one is laughing at me, didn't work at all).  Only three 'quality' full shots.  Yet, shot my course handicap--44/44 88 (helped by parring four of the last five holes).  I was very off in two rounds this week, but still scored my 10th consecutive round in the 80s, something I've never done before.  So, again, I must be getting better where my 'bad' rounds are like 10-15 shots better than my bad rounds used to be.  Did start to figure out over the last few holes why I was off.  Time for a video practice session before the next round!

  12. Well, the best that I can say about yesterday's round, is that I must be getting better, because I played absolutely terrible, had no feel for the swing all day.  Had only 8 "quality" full shots, six of which were drives, yet shot a net -2.  42/44 86 (course HC is 16, at least until Sunday).  8th straight round of mid to low 80s.  What saved me was my under 80 yd wedge game and some really good chipping and long putts.  Short putts were for sh*t.  Missed 6 4-7 footers, made none ( I think the new oversized grip on the counterbalanced putter wasn't installed true).  But I guess, with the new swing, the bad, awful feeling shots aren't as bad as they used to be.  Only two doubles, one of which was a stubbed chip (had 105 to the hole on the number 3 HC hole and bladed the approach).  So a horrible day resulting in a score only 2 or 3 strokes less than my best rounds lately.

  13. Another 84.  44/40.  Was sitting at one over par on the 7th hole (par 5) on the back nine, long drive into the wind, in the fairway, but adjacent to a Dye sand trap (steep bank), so ball was a bit above my feet.  Instead of hitting an iron to get to wedge range, tried to hit a five wood to get to chipping range.  Of course, with that stance, chunked it and continued to butcher the hole to a double bogie.  Playing intelligently, I could have easily shot a 37 or 38.

Had lesson on Wednesday, made an adjustment to my takeaway.  Plus regripped my counterbalanced putter with a fat Superstroke grip now that they're making them for the long cb putters.  The first thing gave me another swing thought that screwed up a shot a hole for the first eight holes.  Second gave me enough of a different feel that it took the hole front nine to adjust.  Absent those factors, may have broke eighty for the first time in a decade.

Love the improvement in the game right now and the fact that I feel that I'm on the verge of getting much better.

  14. Shot 79 yesterday which is pretty good as I've been playing from the blue tees of late. I'm starting to get used to my new irons. I hit the ball much straighter with them than the old ones. I missed both left and right yesterday rather than everything right. :). Two doubles prevented me from having a really nice score. Both came off of meh drives that demonstrated why fairways hit is a meaningless stat. Instead it should be productive drives. I only missed one fairway yesterday but that drive was way better than three others that were in the fairway.

Just noticed something, dear Rev.  What the H (excuse the french) are you doing posting on here at 4:22am????????

  15. So, third mid-80s round in a row.  42/43=85.  Unlike the last two 84s, however, this one I was a bit fortunate to get the score I got.  Two trees hit that ended up forward in play (par, bogie) and a wayward drive that thought was ob, but less than a foot in and a par that followed.  Actually made several putts today and two really good chips.  But the short backswing swing change is now pretty well grooved and the truly bad shots out of nowhere that have been the bane of my game have largely disappeared.  Loving the % of solid strikes even if many are not on line.  Going for a lesson tomorrow at Golftec--going to see if we can address the unfortunate situation I've been in where the short irons have been way, way less consistent than the long irons.  4 of 5 good birdie opportunities today were 7 iron plus.  1 of 7 eight irons or less resulted in a reasonable birdie opportunity.  A four week trend now.  With tax season over, finally have a change for a lesson to see what's going on.

Last 10 rounds.  Only one 90 +.  Previous 10 rounds before that, only two in the 80s.  Loving the trend!

  16. Didn't play today but hit balls twice on the range. Hit 50 this morning at my club to see how my elbow would feel and no issues. Just went out and hit another 100 to test it out and no issues. Hoping yesterday was a freak occurrence.

On a stupid note my Apex pro 9 iron lost the little black rubber piece in the cavity at some point today and it is driving me nuts. I am a bit OCD with my clubs.

Damn--if I hit 100 balls, my elbow, wrist, hands, shoulders, back would all be screaming....

  17. Took a break from taxes and played in our regular Tuesday game today.  Deja vu all over again in regards to Friday's round.  Shot almost the same score, 42/42 84, and felt the same after the round--coulda, shoulda been so much better.  Only made one putt, couldn't hit a 8, 9 or wedge on the green to save my life (almost a month now with this issue), couldn't hit the ball the first four holes.  But still within 3 strokes of my best score in the last 10 years.  Driving the ball better than I ever have (even back in the younger days) and much, much longer.  Hitting my 4 through 7 irons awesome (two great 190 yd 4 irons today).  Six easy strokes left on the course today.

One more week till tax season and over and I can go try to figure out how to play as well from 150 in as I have been doing consistently from 150 out.

Not really complaining, love the new swing and results.

  18. What was the swing change, jax?

After 30+ years of struggling with a very, very long backswing and the inconsistencies inherent in it, I have finally found, and starting to groove, a short backswing.  Actually, by real standards, my "short backswing" is a regular length backswing.  But to me, it feels like a quarter backswing, kind of like a chip shot.  But, however it feels, I have been able to just move forward with the swing without the feeling that I have to rush it to get the club through.  In my last round, I had only one swing where I felt that the backswing got away from me (and guess what, a duck hook).  I actually have confidence now that I can hit a really powerful shot with the shorter feel swing.

  19. I must be making progress with the new swing.  Shot a 40-43/83 today, within the top 5 scores of the last few years, and felt really, really disappointed in my score.  Two bladed 9 irons that I salvaged pars on, a bladed sand wedge bogie, chunked 60 yd wedge for my only double, a 3 putt from 15 feet, an eagle chip that hit the cut above a drain and went straight sideways, resulting in a bogie, etc.  Left 8 strokes on the course today on shots that should be easy and straightforward for me.

Good news is that my ball striking and putting otherwise was really strong for me to even be in that position.  just a shame to hit the ball so well and so much better than my usual and not to get the results it deserved.

Five rounds now after the swing change has clicked in and I've picked up a good 20 yds with the driver.  Playing partners are quite impressed.  Just wish I could hit the short shots as well as I hit the long shots.

BTW, we had the Augusta winds today.  Played one hole where the wind was behind our backs on the tee shot and by the time we hit our second shots, the wind was almost directly into us.  But high seventies and sunny, so no complaints.

  20. @Ken - Jax is supposed to be retired. :)

I am.  85% of this is volunteer AARP tax preparation coordination (my site did a record 65 returns today).  I've barely started the limited paying stuff I've still got.  Looking to be exclusively tax and golf till the 15th (actually 18th this year)!  Dear wife has been extremely understanding.

  21. Two Thirds of the way through tax season, but I've been able to preserve Tuesdays and Fridays for golf.  No practice or lessons, but at least am able to play.  We went up to the Oak Marsh Course at Omni Plantation on Amelia Island today (the site of Big Break a couple of years ago).  The short backswing remake of my swing is really starting to take hold.  Shot a 42/42 84 with making only one putt over 4 feet and relatively poor mid to short iron play.  Driving the ball really well, 5 wood and hybrid have been great and 4,5,6 and 7 irons very, very solid today.  BUT, can't seem to hit a solid 8,9,PW,GW to save my life.  This is now a four round trend!  Had 4 makeable birdie putts today from the longer clubs, two 7 irons from 155-160, a 5-iron from 177 and a 5 wood into the breeze from 209.  But despite many opportunities, only one solid short iron/wedge all day, an 8-iron birdie.   Very strange to feel more confident with a 4 iron in my hand than a 9 iron, but the results warrant that.  Back to the pro after the 15th to see what that's all about.

Beautiful sunny, mid 80's, light wind day in a gorgeous setting, so all in all, was good!

  22. Ken, absolutely right, short game has been my bane for a long time. Funny, I have the same problem : the short game practice area at my course is crappy. It's next to the parking lot, so a skull or errant shot can do real damage, but also, there are no tight lies. All the grass surrounds are 4-6inch deep sawgrass. To practice, I also do it on the course, but that's limited for obvious reasons. But that's what I need, so thanks for confirming that. It's been too crowded to practice on the course lately. Maybe I'll try to find another place.

My club last year had fast greens, unlike my current course, and great short game practice areas: a chipping /putting green (both allowed ), a separate pitching green for shots up to 50-90 yds, and a short iron range for shots up to 160. And a double-ended full range. I practiced a lot and enjoyed it as much as playing. Unfortunately it was a long drive in tough traffic, so it actually led to my playing less golf. So I quit after a year, and re-joined my current course, about 10 minutes away, but not nearly so nice.

Clearly, if you have your priorities straight, you oughta move!!!

  23. Hang in there, Kev!

A friend from Texas told me Florida is windier than Texas, and I believe it.

Another guy told me the golf season in Florida is pretty much over by June each year: too hot. For those of us who play year round here, we know all the challenges each season brings: wind, mosquitos, sand fleas, love bugs, heat, rain, hurricanes, snow birds, heat and humidity. Did I mention skin cancer? How about lightning? To be a golfer year-round in Florida, you have to be dedicated! Or insane.

Eh, I don't know about some of this.  At least if one golfs within a  couple of miles of the coasts (and why would you not?), the heat is not normally a factor.  Yes, it gets hot, but never so much as to interfere with or prevent play.  The bugs?  At least near the coasts, never a factor.  Lightning?  In 11 years here, golfing twice or more a week, albeit near the coast and normally morning golf, only one round cut short by lighting danger (ocean breezes are wonderful for dissipating the  T-showers).  Wind?  I used to do wind farm financing.  Did you know that Florida has the WORST wind profile in the USA for wind energy?  Last I heard, we still only have two utility scale wind turbines in the state (versus several thousand in Texas).  Hurricanes--none in the last 10 years (knock on wood).  Lastly, our glorious sunshine--they make sunscreen for that.

Oh, the snow birds.  Well, yes, if you live near the coasts, you have to deal with that, but not if you live north of Daytona.  Snow bird season is actually slow season in north Florida.

I think year round golf here is pretty awesome.  The only round we cancelled in the past year was because it was too frigging cold!
