**Finally got the JDL shaft that Tim Gillis of miyazaki sent me**
LOOKS:
With the all gloss black and the Gold / silver scorpion design, it certainly gives the shaft a unique design.
But not just that, this shaft is made for adjustable woods, so no matter how you turn it, it looks pretty consistent and wouldn't distract you at all.
I know because I had to set my club face open a little.
As usual, Miyazaki always comes up with very pretty designs.
Performance:
Head used for 18 holes - Superdeep (setting: 0.75* open . 9* loft)
SS: 104-108mph
Ball carry: 250-280yds. Longest drive - 312yds.
Feel: Wow, even though the butt and upper mid section of the shaft is stiffer (55 code) , this club paired with the right head is awesome.
It doesn't feel soft at all, rather it feels firm and smooth. The lower half and the tip are (43), but unless I swing out of my shoes, I don't feel
the tip being too lose / active at all.
Trajectory: Ball flight is penetrating and doesn't balloon. But then again, I think it's mainly because I've always had that kind of penetrating
type ball flight. I had a friend swing it a couple times because he has a smoother swing and sure enough, he hits it high.
Consistency: Ok, this is where I'm actually quite impressed with. My misses are quite tight, around 5-8yds left and right.
When I had my club head at neutral , I consistently hook the ball, so I set the head at slightly open and it truly straightened my balls.
I hardly hit hooks anymore after, rather I hit a lot of draws.
Taking into consideration that the superdeep is VERY workable and you have to have the SS mph to hit it, the shaft does keep the ball
dispersion quite tight. When I hit a fade or a push, I know it's my fault, but it really doesn't punish me badly.
The one I received was JDL5 S-Flex, so it's on the lighter side, make sure you get the right one for the type
of head, swing style and SS that you are. In my opinion, this shaft is a little too soft for me
Distance: Oh, this is easy... I'm averaging about 270-280 yards on good shots and around 230-240 on miss hits. And again, this is using a Superdeep head
which is a head that is very workable and not everyone can hit.
Spin: Average 2700 rpm (rounded down). I think the heavier JDL will lower the RPM even lower.
Final Thoughts:
At retail price point of $250 ($100 lower than other premium brands like MRC), and you can find it even lower than that,
Amazing design of the shaft, amazing performance of the shaft as well as
the great service that I got from Tim Gillis himself, I really don't know how you can go wrong with Miyazaki.
The only critic I have is perhaps they don't have enough exposure , because they surely deserve it.
I'm now a Miyazaki collector so I'm expecting to own all of their lines in the near future.
Again... want a beautiful Japanese shaft that performs great with a great price point?
Give Miyazaki a chance.
