  1. While I'm generally going to say the numbers are the priority, there are designs that I will never even consider because I think they're too ugly. I don't care for mallets in general, but the modern oversized ones are a hard pass for me. Fortunately, when I got fit last year my numbers were best with traditional blades, and the Mizuno OMOI 1 that I ended up with is an almost identical match for the 20 year old La Jolla it replaced, so it seems my stroke has not changed in that time. I hope that means it's not going to change going forward.
  2. I forgot I asked this. The PW already has 10ish grams of lead tape on it (it was only C8 originally). Heck, the whole set (M3) has lead tape, all of the swingweights were lower than I like. I have also built a Maltby head with a 95 gram shaft as a trial, and it didn't work. Maybe it's just that shaft doesn't fit me. I talked with my fitter (Derek) about it. (He's not the guy who originally fit me. That guy has left golf for a real job and salary.) Unlike my instructor, he doesn't like backweighting. He asked what irons I was using, and when I said, "M3", his response was, "Oh!" That's comforting! Apparently the M3s are notorious for hot spots. I was planning to get new irons next Spring anyway, so I'm not going to make any changes before than. In the meantime, Derek is going to have me come in for a few sessions of just playing with shaft weights to see what works best before the full fitting.
  3. Date 09/20/2023 Course Name Hueston Woods Gross Score 82 Course Handicap 8 Gross Strokes over/under par 10 Net Score to Par 2 Net Score 74 Net Birdies or better 5 Longest Drive 253 VCT Match Play Frustrating day. My ballstriking was awful (fore left!), but my chipping and pitching were the best they've ever been. That resulted in only 26 putts, which made my score much more respectable than it could have been. I made par, net birdie, on all of the par 5s. The highlight was #7, where I made par despite a penalty stroke (unplayable). I thought I was laying up to the flat area 50ish yards in front of the green, but had a career 5 wood that left me pin high a few yards off the right. Almost holed my chip, left with less than a foot.
  4. Date 09/13/2023 Course Name Harbor Links Gross Score 81 Course Handicap 10 Gross Strokes over/under par 9 Net Score to Par -1 Net Score 71 Net Birdies or better 6 Longest Drive 256 VCT Match Play If you're in SE Indiana or SW Ohio, Harbor Links (Liberty, IN) is an almost unknown gem. At $45 for weekdays, it's also a steal.
  5. The most useless job in the world is the autoworker at BMW who installs turn signals.
  6. One of my regular playing partners still plays a Saquatch. "I tried to get fitted but nothing was better!" I think he really keeps it because his brother (a local pro) gave it to him, but he's really short with it. One of these days the rest of us are going to steal it from his bag and put in something, anything, else.
  7. For those of us who are optically challenged, that's a great feature!
  8. It's been a very long time (I was there during 9/11), but I was extremely impressed with the place and value.
  9. Date 09/08/2023 Course Name Vineyard Gross Score 81 Course Handicap 10 Gross Strokes over/under par 10 Net Score to Par 0 Net Score 71 Net Birdies or better 5 Longest Drive 251 VCT Match Play Score I got to add a second round this week. One stroke better, so they're both posted. Still putting extremely well, just can't get rid of the occasional disaster iron.
  10. I haven't had any golf shoes with BOA (haven't found the right fit, but I'll buy when I find the right pair, 7.5 2E), but all of my cycling shoes are BOA, and I won't ever go back to laces there. FWIW, BOA dials are guaranteed for life. I've had several replaced under warranty without any hesitation from BOA. Replacement is pretty easy.
  11. Date 09/06/2023 Course Name Pebble Creek Gross Score 79 Course Handicap 7 Gross Strokes over/under par 8 Net Score to Par 1 Net Score 72 Net Birdies or better 3 Longest Drive 257 VCT Match Play Score I had five one-putts of 10-18' in the last six holes that made this round much more respectable than my ballstriking deserved.
  12. Date 08/31/2023 Course Name The Links at Rising Star Gross Score 81 Course Handicap 12 Gross Strokes over/under par 9 Net Score to Par -3 Net Score 69 Net Birdies or better 6 Longest Drive 277 VCT Match Play Score I used to really like this course, but it was in terrible condition today. The first nine (started on 10) I scored better than I struck it, the second nine was the reverse. This course is always windy, but it's the first time I have played with it from the north. I have to remember to change balls for this amount of wind in the future. I really like the Maxfli Tour X, but the Bridgestone Tour BX is a better wind ball.
  13. I love the kids who get freaked out by a guy with one white hand and one dark hand!
  14. I sold one here last year. I had no intention of dealing with shipping, so I set a good price and said, "Pickup only." I quickly had a buyer, and just had to wait a couple months for him to be able to make the trip to get it (which was not a problem for me or him, it might be in your case).
  15. I find that extra brightness a real plus. Due to some minor eye issues I cannot see a white ball against a white cloud. I wonder if that Australian brand Optic is still around? I didn't care for the performance, but you could see them from two states over.
  16. I'll have just gotten home from a short vacation, so SWMBO might object, but then again, that's my birthday, so I'll probably get permission.
  17. Good morning all! I slept poorly after getting home late last night. It's "Oktoberfest Season" in Cincinnati, and I worked the first one (Germania) until late last night and am going back this afternoon. Then next weekend it's all day for three days, as I'm running the parking lot for the next one (Liberty Home, Hamilton). In a few minutes I'm going to sneak out for about two hours on the bike, and see if I can't get some blood moving in my legs again.
  18. My list is not neccesarily the "best" courses I have played, but the most memorable, in many cases because of the people I was with and the fun had. Not in order: Jasper Park GC, Jasper AB Banff Springs, Banff, AB The Ocean Course, Kiawah, SC Osprey Point, Kiawah, SC Riverview CC, Easton, PA (probably the most "ordinary" course on my list, but a great day) Mt Washington GC, Bretton Woods, NH Juliette Falls GC, Donnellon, FL Pine Barrens, Brooksville FL Lassing Pointe, Union, KY Rising Star, Rising Sun, IN Edit: One that I forgot, that deserves to be on this list, is the Cascades Course, at The Homestead, Hot Springs, VA.
  19. I shot an 81 today (net -3, Sharon Woods GC, Cincinnati), which, prior to this week, I would have been happy with. But after shooting a 39 in my Monday league, and then tying my best ever at 73 on Wednesday, this felt like a disappointment. However, the main reason I'm posting this is I want to know what person thought it was a smart idea to use red, orange, and yellow for the pin position flags. I defy anybody but the most eagle eyed around to tell the difference between red and the orange hue they used from any distance at all. I'm thankful for rangefinders!
  20. You quoted ME?! Must be fake news FWIW I'm still using the grip!
  21. Nice round! Majestic Springs is one of my favorite local courses, I just wish it was a little more local.
  22. Date 08/23/2023 Course Name Pebble Creek Gross Score 73 Course Handicap 8 Gross Strokes over/under par 2 Net Score to Par -6 Net Score 65 Net Birdies or better 7 Longest Drive 259 I haven't been playing much lately, as guys in my regular group have had some issues. My nine hole league isn't enough to post here. I've been on a serious slump for the last two months, but I got looked at, and Steve fixed a setup issue (my shoulders were too level and open). After a couple of weeks of working with that, my scores are really coming back. Last night I decided, "What the hell!", and got up early and got out just before 7. Partly due to really soft greens, I tied my best ever score (73, 2 over), and it should have been a little better. There's hope yet!
  23. I'd be interested, but October is tough for me. The only possible date would be Saturday the 14th.
