1. Finally getting to update here. Saturday and Sunday were our club championship at Urbana Country Club. The weather was great except for a 2 hour delay on Sunday. Saturdays round was very steady. No big hick ups and no real birdie runs. I ended up at even par 72. That gave me a one shot lead going into Sunday. Sunday was a great morning as it was my daughters 7th birthday. We had a lot of fun before I had to go play at 10. The round could not have started smoother. 2 pars and I was feeling good. I bridied the 3rd hole and was off and running. 2 more birdies on 5 and 8 and I was starting to build a lead. I added another birdie on the 10th hole to have a 9 shot lead with 8 to play. Then the rain came. We stopped in the middle of the 12th hole for 2 hours. Needed less to say I had a 10 shot lead after the break and could never regain the command on my game I had before the break. I stumbled a little coming in and finished at -2 (70) to win by 9. This made four in a row at our club for me and it was a lot of fun after the round filling the trophy with ice cream so my daughter and friends could enjoy it.
2. No need to hem the pants as they will send them in the size that you want. They are very true to regular pants and are not the easiest to get on mid round. If doing that order a size up.
3. Does anyone have any more feedback as the summer goes on? I know we have rain in the forecast for this weekend here. The suit has been in the bag the entire year and thankfully I have not needed it lately. I will keep this updated as we go on through the fall.
4. This weekend we have our annual club championship. I have won this 3 years in a row and I hope to make it 4. I think every year I put a little more pressure on myself to keep defending the title. We have 3 - 4 guys that can go low on any day and that makes it fun to know you do have to play your best to win. I tee off on Saturday at 8am. There will be live scoring and I will post the link in the thread for those that want to follow along.
5. Made a schedule change, I will try for the US Mid Amateur out of the Omni Interlocken Golf Club in Broomfield, CO Aug 13. I will be out there for work so why not try with a full field.
6. We will definitely do that! Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy
7. I never had the CB in the lower irons 7-PW. I was using my older Srixons. I can tell you the GolfSub70 MB irons are softer than the Srixon 965's I have. I am getting the same distance and workability. I am really pleased with how easily the transition went. I can tell you the CB's are great in the long irons. They have the same top line and look as the MB.
8. I had the Twin City Championship this past weekend. It was played at Urbana Country Club (my home course) 18 holes Saturday and Champaign Country Club 36 holes Sunday. The first round did not go as I had planned as I hit only 2 fairways all day on my home course. I managed to get it in at 74 (+2) but was very unhappy with how I played. Being my home course I really wanted to play well and get off to a better start. I ended the day 2 shots back from the leaders. Sunday was a much better day off of the tee. The opening 18 I again started poorly and was +2 through 3. I fought that back to -1 through 11 and stumbled on the 13th hole coming in to shoot an even par 71. That left me one shot off the lead and in the final group. I quickly gained the lead with an opening birdie and a double by the leader. From there I knew what my group was doing but I didn't know what everyone else was doing. I built a 4 shot lead in my group after 11 holes and was feeling very good. I played a smart safe round of golf and was 3 up on my group after 17. Walking to 18 I was asked if I knew where I stood. I said I knew where I was with my group, but not the field. I am glad I was asked, turns out there was a 69 that got posted and his total was +5 for the 3 rounds. I had a 1 shot lead going to 18. The 18th is a medium length par 5 and I knew I could play safe and get the W. I hit a perfect drive and had 212 to the flag. There is OB left and long of the green so I hit a 5 iron into the front bunker and took bogey out of play. A splash out to 18', 2 more putt and the victory was mine. This was my biggest victory in a few years and man did it feel good. The GolfSub70 irons were on all weekend and I am excited to finish the year on a strong note.
9. Well I have had a good week so far. Wednesday I qualified for the Illinois State Mid-Amateur at Stone Bridge CC Aug 20-21. I shot 71 (-1) to finish T-2. They only took 5 and ties so I was very happy to get out from this site. The course played shorter than the 7100 on the score card, but was very fair and it had been a while since I had seen the course. I started the round very smoothly with no bogeys and two birdies on the first 9 holes. A water ball off the tee on 10 lead to my first bogey, but I bounced right back with a birdie on 11. All pars till another water ball off the tee on 18 and a bogey on the last to finish at -1. It would have been very nice to tie for 1st but it was not in the cards. I have another event this weekend. 54 holes on 2 different courses. Saturday we start on my home course Urbana Country Club with 18 hole. Sunday we move across town to Champaign Country Club for 36 holes. This will be a grind as it is going to be around 90* both days. I also got my GolfSub70 639MB irons in. 7-PW. I played last night with these and they are awesome. I will get some more photos of them today and post in their thread my thoughts and the photos.
10. After almost a month off from tournament golf we are back at it on Wednesday with the Illinois State Mid-Amateur qualifier. 5 spots and ties get in. I am playing a practice round on Sunday and will post some updates then. This starts the final push to my summer events as its hard to believe summer is half over.
11. Well that was a long day. Yesterday I played in the 100th CDGA Amateur Championship at The Glen Club in Golf, IL. What a golf course. It was wet (what course in the mid west isn't), but in very good shape. I hit the ball with my wedges about as well as I could hope. Off the tee I struggled early, but found it about 7 holes in. In hind sight 7 holes to late. I started my day on the 10th hole. Routine par and we are on our way. Next 2 holes bogey, birdie to be even through 3. Not a bad start. Then my tee shot on my 4th hole (13th) a par 5 got away from me on the left and was in jail. I tried to advance the ball as far as I could and that was about 20 yards. From there I was able to lay up to 100 yards, not bad and still could make par. I hit what I thought was a good wedge, but it landed maybe a yard to far past the flag and the first hop ended up in the rough. An aggressive chip and 2 putts later added up to 7. I gathered myself and hit a good shot on the next hole to 10' and missed the birdie putt but had an easy par. Another bogie on the next hole and I am now +3 through 6. I continued to fight my swing, but found it on 18. I was +4 after 9. We make the turn to #1 (our 10th). Good drive, ok iron and then 3 putt, bad lip out. Par our 11th hole. Drive on my 12th hole 450 yards was the best so far. Had 144 in, Good wedge and another 3 putt, bad lip out again. I am now +6 through 12. I knew I was hitting the ball well and that the putts would start to fall. 2 pars in a row with make able birdie putts and I am feeling better. Onto our 15th hole, a big par 5. I hit an ok tee shot up the right. 5 iron lay up to 89 yards. 2nd best shot of the day, a 60* to 18" and a kick in birdie. 3 pars to finish the round and I am at +5 (77). Not my best at all. But I know I am hitting the ball well. The 2nd round we start on the front. In the rain. A good tee shot, 7 iron to 8' and a good putt and we are off with a birdie. 2 pars in a row and onto the 4th. A drive up the right, a good wedge and a 15' birdie putt and we are now -2 on the round through 4. Starting to come back. A par on the 5th and onto the 6th. Worst drive of the afternoon. Pulled it left, but was able to get a punch 5 iron to 130 yards out. From there I hit the best shot of my day to inside a foot and a kick in to go to -3 through 6 (+2 over all). I finish the front with 3 pars and a smooth 33 (-3, +2 overall). Onto the 10th, a solid drive, decent iron to 30' and finally a long putt falls, -4 through 10. Two more pars and we are -4 through 12 (+1 over all). Side story, we were reporting our scores every 3 holes so it was semi live scoring. The gentleman taking our scores looks at mine and told me at the time I had the round of the afternoon going and was right on the number for the cut. (I didn't really want to know). I pared the 13th and felt good. A poor iron shot on the par 3 14th led to a bogey and a stretch of poor shots. A bad wedge on 15 and a 3 putt on 16 took me out of the tournament. We had a rain delay on the 17th for 90 mins. I come back out par 17 and finish strong with a birdie on 18. -2 (70) for the round. +3 for the tournament (147). 2 shots out of match play. The afternoon round only 4 people shot lower. I had a stretch of 19 holes spanning both rounds where I didn't make a bogey and played those 19 holes in -5. If I play holes 13-17 on the back 9 both times better I would have qualified for match play. It was a long day, but I really was happy how I hit the ball after the first 6 holes. My next tournament is not until July 24th. Which is the qualifier for the Illinois State Mid-Amateur. It will be nice to have a couple of weeks off after a busy June.
12. Tomorrow starts the CDGA Amateur. I am really excited for this test of golf. Could be a long week but it will be well worth it. Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy
13. The local scorecard had it as must replay. They told us on the tee we were playing them as part of the course. Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy
14. What a busy week. Wednesday was my qualifier for the Illinois State Amateur. It did not go as planned but I did not hit the ball bad. One really bad break and 2 poor swings. We had 2 rain delays in the round and after teeing off at 8:40 we finished the round at 3:30. I opened the day with a birdie and was off to a good start. A 3 putt par on the 2nd hole for me and I was not happy but pars are never bad. I made my first mistake on the 5th hole of the day with a poor wedge from 122 yards leading to a bogey. I was even through 8 when the rains came and we stopped play. After an hour and a half delay we went back out. My 9th hole (the 18th on the course). is a dog leg right par 4 with power lines running in front of the green. I hit a good drive up the right hand side and even though I couldn't see the flag I had a good look. I hit a good shot or so I thought. It hit the power lines and came up 30 yards short. We played the power lines as part of the course which I have never heard of but oh well. It led to another bogey. Another rain delay after the 10th hole. After that rain delay I came out and went bogey, bogey. And that is where my day ended. +3. I the ball well but did not score. I have the CDGA Amateur starting on Monday. I am really looking forward to this event as it is on a course that I really like and enjoy. I will post a link Monday morning that will have live scoring. You can go here and read about the event. https://www.cdga.org/event.asp?cmd=ev&id=5&evid=1872&qevid=0&rpage=event.asp
15. This weekend was the U of I Open held at the Orange Course here in Savoy, IL. Saturdays round was rained out and we got to play 36 holes on Fathers day. We got about 1.5" of rain on Saturday so we played the ball up on Sunday as the course was still very wet. With this everyone knew scores would be low. This course usually plays very firm and fast and to play it soft it was a different animal. My first round I ended up shooting a 72. I was disappointed with this as I left 3 or 4 strokes on the course but I never really had to work for any pars either. I ended up being 4 back after the first 18 and almost didn't make the Championship flight, but did on the number. The second round started out well with a birdie on the 8th hole (my starting hole). I added a couple more and was -3 through 11. I missed a short birdie put on the 18th hole (my 11th) to stay at -3. I birdied the following hole to get it to -4 and thinking if I could get 2 more I might have a chance. That was not to be. A poor shot on my 13th hole (par 3 2nd) led to a bogey and that is where I finished the round. 69 in a tournament is never bad. I ended up tied for 4th. The winner shot 70-63 to run away by 7. We all knew that round was out there and it is fun to watch someone shoot that number. I am starting to like this course as my last 4 competitive rounds here are all par or better (70, 71, 72, 69). My next event is Wednesday in the Illinois State Amateur Qualifier. Hopefully we can keep playing like this.
16. Back at it again this weekend. We have the University of Illinois Open at the Orange Course Saturday and Sunday. Saturday I tee off at 9:00 AM. 50% chance of rain each day but we should get both rounds in. I have played well at this course in the past qualifying for the Illinois Amateur here twice with rounds of 70 & 71 (-3 total). I am looking forward to this weekend as I do know the course and I know I can score on it. Stay tuned.
17. I would think this would be perfect for an Ireland trip. I didn't have any quality issues but I did sweat a lot. In Ireland you should be fine and I would recommend this for that trip.
18. The weather held off this weekend and it was actually a lot warmer than they thought it would be. Both days were in the mid 80's and Saturday had more wind than Sunday. It was not my best tournament but it was not bad either. My swing is still not 100% where I want it. The event was at Lake of the Woods golf course in Mahomet, IL. It is a county parks course that has had trouble in the last few years, but they are making the correct changes and I thought the course played well. The greens were firm but putted very nicely. Saturday's round I shot a 71 (-1) from the white tee's to finish the day in 3rd place 3 shots out of the lead. I had a good feeling going into Sunday that I could make that up and be around on the back 9 Sunday for a shot to win. Sunday's round I could not have started better. 2 pars and I was one back of the lead after 2 holes. I would not get any closer until the 18th hole. It was a very up and down round for me. More downs than ups unfortunately. The 5th hole a short 350 yard par 4 I hit my drive into a hazard to make a bogey. The 7th hole I made the decision that cost me the tournament and hit driver into the junk leading to a double. After the front 9 I was back down 3, right where I started the day. The back 9 started well. A birdie on 10 to stay 3 back, 11 a poor bogey put me 4 back where I would stay until the 15th hole. The 15th is a par 5 that is reachable with a good tee shot. I pulled mine slightly into the left rough and was forced to lay up. The leader miss judged his lay up and was in a hazard. I hit my wedge to 10' and had a great look a birdie. I just missed that put but made par and the leader made double. Down 2 with 3 to play. I have a chance at this point. There are 3 of us within 2 shots at this point all in the same group. All 3 of us miss make-able birdie putts on 16. Onto 17, a 240 yard par 3. I missed the green just left in a good spot. My competitors, one is on the other in a bunker. I lip out my birdie chip and have a tap in par. The leader makes bogey and I am 1 back of both of them going into 18. We all hit good drives on 18 and I have 110 yards in. I hit what I thought was a good shot to an elevated green, but it rolled out to 30' behind the hole. Both of them have 20' birdie putts. I gave my putt too much respect and missed it. I ended up missing the comeback putt as well, but it didn't do any damage to my finishing spot. I ended up 3rd by 2 shot. A good friend of mine ended up tied and lost in the play off. It was fun coming down the stretch with a chance. I wish I would have played more of my game. I went into Sunday knowing 73 would win. If I would have just kept that mentality on the front 9 I think I would have been fine. But that is why we play. Even though I have won my share of events it is somehow different every time you are in that situation. It is always fun and we have another 2 day event next weekend. A little work on the swing this week and I will be in a good spot.
19. Back at it again tomorrow. I tee off at 9:18 in a local stroke play event. Swing is getting close, hopefully the rain holds off. If not I have a rain suit that will keep me dry
20. Yesterday went better than I thought it might. I shot a 73 (+1) good enough to finish solo 6th and qualify for the CDGA Amateur June 24 - 27. The round yesterday started off rougher than I wanted but I was able to straighten out things and finish strong. The course was in very good shape and the greens were very firm (this was surprising as wet as it has been). My golf swing is still somewhere in outer-space but I was able to get up and down 6 times and chipped in for eagle once so that saved me. The driver is on as of right now. The irons I still am missing left with some very good swings and some very poor ones. I have another event this weekend and I am looking forward to it as I have played this course multiple times and won here before.
21. Back into the swing of things. Tomorrow starts a good 2 week run for me. I have the CDGA Amateur qualifier tomorrow following by a local 2 day event this weekend. The another local stoke play event fathers day weekend and the Illinois State Amateur qualifier to finish on the 19th. My swing I fell is slowly getting better and we will see what happens. I am going in with a one hole at a time attitude. Pars are never bad.
