  1. I am a horrendous overthinker when it comes to putting lately. My current Odyssey was purchased off the Callaway pre-owned site. It was listed in like new condition and showed with the wrapping still on the head. Though it works pretty well, every time I visit a golf store, I am trying putters and the Lab putters have been getting my attention. Of course I still have my old Bullseye that I bought in high school back in the sixties. Acushnet at that time offered a sort of custom fitting by letting you specify flat, medium or upright lie along with length and grip options. I still like pulling it out once in awhile. The feel is great even though the sweet spot is about the size of pencil eraser. Ultimately if I bite on the Lab, I'll bite the bullet and pay the price.
  2. When I bought new irons last year, I went with the set wedges all the way through. I was tired of trying to figure out all the sole grinds and bounce levels. I have been extremely happy with my decision. Shafts are matched to the rest of the irons and having all the clubs in line has just made things easier.
  3. I got together with some old SoCal friends from my working days for a round at Golf Club of Rancho California. It was a gorgeous day on an older RTJ design. I had no particular expectations my last round had been an 84. I was as stunned as everybody when I walked off the 18th with a 71 after a 3 putt bogey on 18. Beat my age by a stroke.
  4. I haven't. It is about a 90 minute drive from our location. I'm thinking of making the drive before the season ends.
  5. We're camp hosting at an RV Park near Joseph, Oregon. The course is in Enterprise just down the road. Alpine Meadows is the local 9 hole track. It is a nice little muni with much of the work done by volunteers. Good shape generally and the greens are small, sloped and speedy.
  6. In no particular order, The Old Course, Oakland Hills South, Bandon Dunes, Pacific Dunes, Old MacDonald, Plantation, Mauna Kea, PGA West Stadium, Prestwick and Dallas Athletic Club.
  7. Thank you for the birthday greetings. I'm waiting for the thunderstorms up here in northeast Oregon to clear out before heading to the local course. I have to get a round in today. It is the sixtieth anniversary of my first round of golf. Yes I'm old.
  8. I use both but my preference is for wooden tees. The plastic tees, if the ground is dry, can require a jack hammer to get in the ground. I have thought about adopting the technique I saw Laura Davies use at the Dallas LPGA event a few years ago. I was carrying the scoreboard for her group. She didn't use a tee the entire round. On every teebox her caddy would toss her a wedge, she'd use it to dig up a piece of turf and put the ball on top. Worked pretty well.
  9. I was able to see him play in person at a Senior event in Utah many years ago. Great swing and a friendly personality. RIP.
  10. Played the front 9 at the local yesterday. Hit 7 out of 9 greens. If I'd been able make any kind of putt it would have been quite a day. Pace of play was not very good so we called it after 9 and went in for our free beer that came with the green fee.
  11. Great play by Scheffler today. Nice that he had his grandmother there to watch him pull it off. On a side note, when they showed a clip of Spieth teeing off on 17, there was a guy sitting directly behind him in the gallery wearing aviator sunglasses that looked a lot like Patrick Reid. I'm sure it wasn't really him but that would have been funny to see him in the gallery.
  12. I bought new irons this year, Mizuno 923 Hot metal 6-LW. I carry driver, 17 and 21 degree fairways. The lofts on the new irons are a little stronger and since the 6 iron was the same loft at the 5 hybrid I dumped it. So I am down to 12 clubs in the bag. I have been trying to picture some sort of club to fill in a space in the bag. I was thinking of a trouble club of some kind a hybrid or another wedge maybe. Or it is possible I am just overthinking the notion that I have to have 14 clubs in the bag. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
  13. I spent my working life in southern California. I had a foursome of friends from work and we played regularly all over San Diego and Riverside County. One of our players was a very self-taught player who maintained his fluidity usually by regular consumption of beer throughout the round. He hit a wide variety of shots that, surprisingly, often found their way to the target. One morning we were playing Oak Valley near Beaumont. My friend steps to the tee on a par 4 and swings away. I didn't know it was possible to come into the ball that steep with a driver but he did and impact sent the ball straight up in the air, spinning backward. The ball landed several feet behind him and rolled off into the bushes at the back of the tee. In the meantime, he is standing on the tee looking down the fairway asking if anybody saw the ball land. We told him it was going to be a long second shot when we turned him around and pointed out the ball's resting place. To his credit he also made one of the most unbelievable aces during another round with a tee shot that started 20 yards left of the green, made a big bend back to the right, landed on the back left side of the green and rode the slope all the way down to the hole.
  14. When this ban was announced the pro at the club where I was working looking up the PGA Tour stats on putting. Of the top 30 putters on the tour at that time only one or two were using an anchored stroke. Nobody was gaining any advantage. As was said often at the time, if it was that good a technique, everybody on tour would be trying it. The story of the croquet putting ban coming about is supposedly that Bobby Jones and Joe Dey, head of the USGA at the time, happened upon Sam Snead squatting over his putter on the practice green at Augusta. Jones is said to have told Dey he didn't like the way that putting style looked and shortly thereafter the ban took effect. It didn't keep Snead from putting that way he just went to side saddle.
  15. I didn't bother maintaining a handicap last year with Texas Golf Association since we are on the road with our travel trailer we don't spend that much time in Texas. I am thinking about renewing it this year. Are there any independent, if that is the word, handicap services out there that folks have used and would recommend?
  16. The nearby where I do most of my practice and playing has new ownership. They have added lights to the range, done a major upgrade on the clubhouse and several much needed repairs and upgrades to the course. One of the things they've added is a sound system on the practice range. They play a variety of music. The one song that seems to work into the rotation frequently is Mumford & Sons "I really f---ed it up this time". On one hand it might seem inappropriate to have the f word blasting out on a public speaker on the other it might fit the attitude of some golfers frustrated on the range with their practice. I could see it fitting on somebody's play list coming up 18 after a particularly bad round.
  17. I've been looking at putting a new set of clubs together. I was in the PGA Superstore last week hitting some different irons. Of the brands I tested, the sales guy said Mizuno, based on their experience, had the best shipping time on custom orders. Ping he said was at the bottom. A relative of mine that works for Titleist said they are at about 8 weeks for delivery. Everybody is having supply problems except for PXG, if you believe their ads.
  18. It almost 80 this afternoon in the Dallas area. I drove over to the local course to see if there was a chance I could get out. I wasn't all that surprised to see a full parking lot. In the pro shop, I was told I could go on the waiting list but it would be after 3 before I might get out. I opted for a bucket of range balls instead. As of 1 PM today they had already put out over 200 players. I told the shop guy I'd come back next Monday when the forecast high is only supposed to be 50 with a good north wind.
  19. I have a small coin pouch full of foreign coins. Canadian one and two dollar coins, some Mexican pesos of varying denominations and some coins from the UK left over from my trip to Scotland.
  20. Standard weather for DFW area this week. We peaked at a little over 80 yesterday. Today's high should is only around 60 with a good north wind.
  21. This day in 2005 was my last day on the job. I walked out the door at age 54 and never looked back. All these years down the road it was the right choice and life has been full of great adventures and experiences which have included many great and not so great courses.
  22. Thank you for the birthday wishes. It was a great day. I managed a round at the local 9 hole muni up here in the mountain country of eastern Oregon. Fortunately, I did not shoot my age(70) for that 9. I've been playing golf for almost 60 years and the game is more fun than ever. Thanks again.
  23. A friend of mine was singing the praises of this putter grip on Facebook. I've been thinking of experimenting with something different on my putter. Has anybody on the forum had any experience with these grips?
  24. The course near Dallas where I play quite often did away with the GPS on the carts. I am not sure if it was the cost, the device ran a lot of ads during the round, or the fact that more players were carrying their own devices. I'd go with my own rather than depend on the course to provide.
  25. I went to the less tapered grip as Headhunter suggested and that has helped me with grip pressure and reducing hand action in my swing. I bought a 7 wood recently and put a jumbo version of my current midsize grip on it. Hitting the club with that jumbo has me thinking about changing all the grips to that size.
