  1. Well, the year is about to end and I am very happy with the results.

Finished all holes on two of our three courses and will leave one hole un-birdied on the third course. It is the #2 handicap hole and is mentally intimidating but we shouldn't let that stand in the way - if only.

It's been a great year and a lot of fun to track hole status all year. Played 199 rounds this year and have one more round tomorrow but not on the course with unfinished business. Guess it gives me something to strive for next year. Will be looking for the 2024 thread.

My best guess is that the "expected score" will be something like an average Differential for a golfer with the same handicap index.  Since its something of an average, it will "temper" an extreme 9-hole score by combining it with a much more "normal" second 9

Do you think that this formula for determining the "expected score" will be released to the public?

If not,  won't this really blow the "unofficial" handicaps as well as all "official" non GHIN handicaps out of the water - if they exist.

  3. Finally, I finished one of our 3 courses - got the final hole this past week. Have played 65 rounds on White Wing course (total of 155 on all 3 courses) so am feeling pretty good about where the year stands.

Still have a few holes to get on the other courses. As I posted at the start of the year, I got the last hole in 2022 in the month of December, hope to be lucky enough to make that this year.

  4. Still working but not making much headway.

Played one of our 3 courses today, playing very well with a 70 Gross. Four birdies (two bogies) but did not birdie one of the 4 holes needed to complete that course.

Have one course needing 1 hole, one needing 4 holes and one needing 6 holes. Last year it was in Dec when finally getting the last hole for the year. Hope to finish sooner this year but not getting it done as yet.

    There is always tomorrow!

Is there any way to custom name clubs in our "bag"? Now we are limited to the pre selected names. My reason is I want to try different configurations of the same club. For example, on driver, different shafts, different lofts and so on. This way I can compare the data for different configurations. Now I would have to have multiples of the same club name just with different colors in my bag. It would be difficult to keep track of which color was which configuration. Is there any way to do what I'm looking to do?

No, have to choose from the drop down boxes.

This has been an outstanding request of mine since the V2 days. I wanted to do the same thing - track data on different shafts - color difference is the only choice. You can select a totally different club type - one that you will never use otherwise. But you still have to remember which shaft is which club - that is the same as remembering which shaft is which color. After a few different shafts it is not easily done.

I finally resorted to a spreadsheet type logging which is totally ridiculous to have to do.

Database should be able to accommodate a short user defined text field where you can name it whatever works for you.

  6. We are just past the half way point for the year. Seeing lots of people making some great progress. Posting to get the bump and keep this thread alive.

Have played 105 rounds so far this year and am satisified with the results to this point. The "yellow" cell fill color indicates "eagle" on those holes. Only one of the eagles is on a par 5 so still have 11 par 5s to attack. We have 3 courses (54 holes) so there is still time. Made it last year (all birdies) - getting the last hole in the 12th month. On the bright side - I already have marked off that "last hole" this year so life is good.

  7. Update on my earlier post about Last Shot operation when in GPS mode.

It works the same as the V3, but you have to navigate to Game Mode > Last Shot and tap the screen to start the measuring. Then when you reach the ball you can see the distance. If you forget to start the measuring - then you cannot recover.

When in the GPS Track mode, all you have to do to measure last shot is press on the Club icon on the left center of the face after you reach the ball and it gives you the last shot distance (you don't have to remember to start the measurment). That is great - and much easier.

So now I have two quick easy suggestions for the next improvement cycle:

    1. Add a LS icon during GPS mode that is in the location where the Club icon is located during GPS Track mode (and not used since the club icon is not displayed in GPS only mode). This would allow quick easy access to start the Last Shot measuring during GPS mode.

    2. Add a Subtract icon in GPS Track mode for the manual putting screen. It only has an Add icon. Sometimes it advances 2 strokes on it's own and sometimes when I hit the add icon - it actually adds 2 strokes. There is no easy way to subtract that unwanted stroke before hitting the pin collect icon.

Not major issues but just recommendations for efficiency improvments.

Quick question for those that have used GPS only on the X5. We played a scramble yesterday so I decided to use gps only vs. tracking,  I had to advance each hole manually using the  hole widget. Is this the way it's supposed to work? On the V3 it follows automatically and the X5 doesn't directly address this.

I have used the X5 in GPS mode and it advanced hole to hole automatically for me.

However, I was not able to measure last shot distance with the X5 in GPS mode - you access that function by touching the club icon and the icon is not displayed in GPS mode. (at least not for me).

On the V3 in GPS mode, you can select last shot after you make the stroke - and it will measure the distance as you move to the balls new location. That is a feature of the V3 that I love.

Not sure yet how (or if) that can be done on the X5, still looking.

  9. Not to be repeating myself but want to post one more status of using my X5 - don't want to sound too much like a fan boy - but I do like the X5 even better than the V3.

Played today, waited 2 minutes for the X5 to detect GPS, it did not so I canceled and started "Play Golf" again. This time it only took a minute or less and we were ready to go.

Played 18 holes and it captured 69 of my 70 shots. During editing I discovered that it had actually missed 2 shots - but (my error) had recored an extra putt on one hole so there were 3 shots to fix. Other than that the only editing required was to check the putt distances on every hole (GPS is just not truly accurate enough on the greens). I use manual putting and that is more accurate than auto - at least for me it is.

I love the touch screen X5 - it is much easier than hitting all the buttons on the V3. Although I have noticed that it is sometimes slower to recongize a touch than other times. That is how I got the extra putt. At first I didn't think it had felt my finger, but after hitting it again, it recorded 2 putts instead of 1 putt. And that would be my only complaint at this time, I have not found a way to remove the extra putt until getting to the edit stage. There my be a way to change back to 1 putt from 2 putts before doing the pin collect - but I have not found it as yet. I am still looking. I have learned to wait longer for the response before hitting the screen again.

Sorry for all the people that are having issues, I feel your pain. But I just haven't had any so far.

Since mine is doing so well, this will be the last "mine is working fine" post for me. Good luck to everyone that have not been as lucky.

  10. Well, have had a week and have 4 rounds using the new X5 White (and I have to say "really" White) watch. A long time user of the V3 and most of the "user training" transfers to the X5. I love the V3 and I see the X5 being even better.

No issues in setup, firmware update and the X5 has been finding the course in under 2 minutes. Hope my good luck in operation continues.

For me any missed shots were almost always my issue in not using the watch in the best way. The X5 tags are an improvement and detection preforms better even than the V3. I am a golfer so perfection can not be obtained. If I miss a shot here and there  it is not going to affect my stats over the 200 plus rounds I play during the year. Using the stats to try to improve my game is my objective - not create a perfect database.

Love the touch screen - although it will require a learning curve with my old, big fingers. Finding that a combination of touching the screen and then using the knob to scroll the screen is working best for me as I learn.

Repetition is needed for this old guy to remember how to navigate the menus. Last round was getting better.

I use TheGrint to keep my score during the round so will turn off the score function as an un-needed step for me, and it is not needed for any of the Stats being retained.

Use manual putting and the touch screen makes that SO MUCH better than the V3 - I have always felt manual was more accurate than auto. But that is really limited by GPS and not Shot Scope.

I may catch some flack for this but I never had any issues with the watch band on the V3 and I really prefer it to the new band on the X5. I find it difficult to get the sticky band through the two loops but maybe that will get easier with practice. I would like it better if I had experienced the issues that some people seemed to have with the V3 band - but I didn't.

Can't wait for X5 bands to show up on the accessories list for purchase - the White is just TOO White for me. Will probably try the Gray or Blue.

    Really love the X5.

  11. So, I read the forum today for about 30 minutes staying in the menu bread crumbs trail at the top of the page and read probably 20 threads at random with no issues.

I then clicked on the "unread content" link and without reading any threads scrolled to the bottom of the page and clicked on the "load more activity" button. Immediately the "site error" popup appeared and was not able to recover with any navigation methods. Back button or reload and even load the site totally new in the browser - nothing worked. Closing the browser and reopening the browser did work to allow MGS site to be loaded again.

This is a navigation issue that I cannot overcome. Clearing cookies fixes it but will occur again almost immediately reading forum using unread content.

I will use the bread crumbs one more time for a longer period to insure that it is just an unread content paging/navigation issue but reading the entire forum using just the bread crumbs is not enjoyable.

  12. Still happening to me today. Both Chrome and Edge.

In doing a little testing to try to isolate issue noticed that if I use the navigation trail at the top of the pages, issue seems not to occur. More testing needed to confirm but seems to be the trend.

My normal usage pattern is to use the "unread content" link at the top right of the page - after a few page loads the error occurs. Now, I do load each unread topic(that I want to read) by right clicking on the small icon next to the topic title that opens the first unread posting and I open it in a new tab. After reading the unread portion of the thread - I then close the tab, returning focus to the previous tab - which is still displaying the unread content listing.

Not always on the first new tab but after the first few new tab openings, the 404 error occurs. Clearing site cookies will fix the issue. Just guessing but appears that setting navigation cookies on new tab and then returning to previous tab is the common trigger mechanism.

    Or maybe not.

Normally if this happens a simple cache clear will sort it all away.

Just occurred again today (Chrome browser) - when the 404 occurs, reloading the MGS website does not clear the issue. Closing and relaunching the browser does seem to clear the issue.

So clearing the cache is probably restoring operation. However, that may be fixing the symptom and  not addressing the cause of cache needing to be cleared.

Assumption since the issue occurs again at a later time. Something is causing the cache coruption.

Lately, when I hit the browser back arrow or move between MyGolfSpy pages I get this:  a white screen and

    "Bad Request

Your browser sent a request that this server could not understand.
Size of a request header field exceeds server limit.

Additionally, a 400 Bad Request error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request."

I have been getting this same error using Chrome browser for the past week or so. Never ocurred prior to that.

Not every time but once it occurs it is consistent. Not sure if it is a new security feature of Chrome or possibly a cookie storage issue? Or possibly if some  loading/tracking data is being tacked onto the end of Chrome's request resulting in excessive length. Once it occurs then the back button, reload button load more activity button all seem to fail.

I closed site and reopened but the issue was still occuring. Went to Edge browser and could not duplicate issue. Reopened Chrome browser and issue has not reoccured today. Will try to do some more isolation testing next time it occurs.

I read the forum using the "unread content" method so possibly it is related to the "paging" code? It occurs when opening a thread in a new page (to read) and sometimes when clicking on the "load more activity" tab at the bottom of the thread listing.

Damn!  Some of you are already 100% on this and we're not even through March yet!  I was gonna join, but not sure I belong in this group any more.  Haha...

You looking at the 2023 tab or the 2022 tab?

Hope I am getting the correct sheet to post status. Hate to be tracking with just myself.🙂
