I have been seriously considering a 7 wood lately. For some reason I am much more interested in that than a hybrid. I do have a utility that has been a great club for me but I am wondering if I would enjoy just a little more versatility.

Great club to have in your bag!  I hit mine ALL the time!

The success I’m having with my new 7 wood has not gone unnoticed.  This week one of my regular foursome just put in his bag a Callaway Epic 7 wood and my Father in law is trying out a Callaway Epic Flash Heavenwood.

The Heavenwood is the REAL DEAL!  Fun club to hit. Very versatile. If you have never hit one, then I highly recommend you give your father in laws club a go....just don’t cause any damage to it. Holidays with in laws are stressful enough without something like that hanging over your head. 😜

Ok, so I've played 36 holes over the past 72 hours with these irons and have some opinions, some ok, some that raise a slight red flag. Scoring wise I didn't really keep a running score, only kept notes of good swings, save for starting with a birdie on the first hole of the season for the third straight year.

    The Positives

    - I love the sound of these irons, as it's been said in this thread so far it has a distinct feel, almost like a crack and that's pretty true to form. They feel solid and sound solid, regardless of where you strike the ball, and that's something I can get behind.

    - The finish is holding up pretty damn well, and given where I was hitting some shots that's an impressive feat. The club frames the ball well, especially the famous white line-up line on the bottom of the clubs

    - My my Modus, what a nice feeling shaft. It really feels like I can be more aggressive on swings with it and it makes the irons feel wonderfully balanced and swingable.

    The Negatives

    - Distance so far has been lacking. Part of me wonders if this is because my swing is still in early days, but yesterday shots were coming up 5+ yards short of what I would have expected. I will put some blame of this on me because my swing is a bit of a shambles right now, but I will keep checking these numbers, especially when I get Arccos up an running on these bad boys.

    - I know many of you see SGI irons as irons with training wheels, but let's be real, a bad swing = a bad result. I've adjusted to the wedges length and the short irons as well, but the longer irons will decidedly take time. I haven't struck a good 4 iron yet in multiple attempts and 5 iron is a rare beast at this point in time as well.

    What Comes Next

Well, what comes next is some range sessions this week/weekend leading to one of the more interesting decisions I've made in a while. I signed up just under the wire to compete in the Local Newspaper Amateur qualifying tournament in 6 days. Yep, you read that right, a guy with a swing that isn't ideal with a bag he's pretty much played only 2 rounds with is gonna try and make the cut in a local amateur tournament after not playing in one for nearly... 8 years? What's the worst that can happen?

    Nice write up!

Are you playing at Cazenovia Country Club or Timber Banks for the qualifier?  I played a practice round at Timber Banks the other day...it is in the best shape that I have ever seen it. Greens were fast AND rolling true. Good luck to you in your quest!

Are those perforations in the toe? If so your feet might get a bit wet in soggy grass.

Yes they are. I believe they are listed as water repellent while the BOAs are waterproof. With that said...my round this morning was with wet grass....and I was missing plenty of fairways this morning so they got put to the test. My toes did not get wet at all. So I guess they are water repellent. Lol. Would I wear them on a day with rain forecast....no I would not.

  4. Just bought and tried out a pair of these shoes. I normally get a 40% discount, but because of COVID it was increased to a 60% discount with free shipping. I couldn’t resist at $52. ASICS golf shoes have never been beautiful in my minds eye, but these were tolerable so I pulled the trigger.

These are quite comfortable. Now I would not say they are as comfortable/cushioned as the Puma golf shoes, but these are a much more stable shoe with a solid heel counter. They readily accommodate an orthotic and the toe box is quite roomy even at a regular width. They appear to be true to size. They do not appear to be available in wide widths.

The shoe appears to be well made. Good torsional stability and the forefoot breaks at the appropriate spot. Insole is removable. If anyone is on the fence about this shoe, I give it my professional seal of approval.

I don't care for any setup that does not allow the ball to go into the hole.  Bouncing it off the cup or plastic or whatever doesn't hole the ball. I don't understand why we can't just have normal cups and remove the ball by grasping it with two fingers and not touching anything but the ball --- but I'm also just glad we're able to play golf, even if some of the added precautions make it seem odd.

I hear you loud and clear.....I am just glad golf courses have been opened back up. Totally saving my sanity!!!!

I have also thought that filling the cups with liquid hand sanitizer would solve this problem as well.  😜

  6. Most of the putting gurus say that your eyes either need to be over the ball or inside the line. Outside the line is bad, but I am sure someone might be able to make it work.  A putting mirror does wonders to ensure a repeatable setup every time....shoulders and eye position.

  7. My answer to this question until last night was “No.”.
Consider this a Public Service Announcement as well. It is a good idea to pad the crossbar of your golf net frame....not just the side posts. I have a nice black eye today.

Just so you all know. I merely switched to a lower lofted club and continued to hit balls while icing my eye between shots. Padding will go up today.

I am just starting up the program, and am going to try blue only and see how it goes. The blue stick only is the rage on GolfWRX right now, seems like some folks are seeing success.

This part to me is fascinating.  I too have been following comments on GolfWRX regarding the blue stick only protocol. Some people swear by it. Really seems as though it jump started their progress that they weren’t seeing with the standard three stick protocol. Makes me wonder if neurologically some people respond better to less training....or were they overtraining with the three stick protocol?  I have no idea what the answer is....but it intrigues me.

  9. I do have an official handicap at the club because my scores get turned in, and I also keep track of my scores separately now.   Just one more thing to do that was all inclusive before.  I keep my handicap because I play in tournaments where there is an upper ceiling on the handicap number allowed to play. I get it. They want to eliminate vanity handicappers getting into tournaments they shouldn’t be in.  They also want to get rid of the guy who shoots 71 in a tournament while posting 85s in rounds played alone. Peer review.   Doesn’t mean I have to be happy about it. Lol 😝

Let's quote the Purpose of the Handicap System:

Handicaps are intended to be used when playing or competing with others.  When you're playing by yourself, your handicap really doesn't matter.  Its pretty logical that the data used to compute a handicap should also consist of rounds played with or competing with others.  If your scores are the same, whether playing by yourself or playing with others, why does it matter?  And if you're consistently better one way than the other, shouldn't the scores that count for handicap calculation be the ones that are most similar to the conditions when your handicap actually matters?

I'm not worried about this one.  The elimination of "solo rounds" for handicap was the first small step towards the WHS, towards making our procedures similar to the entire rest of the world.  If there are future changes (I believe there will be), those of us in the US will see more restrictions in types of scores to be posted, not loosened restrictions.

I understand why they are doing it. I have always used the handicap system differently. I don’t play in handicapped events. I use it solely for tracking my level of play.

  11. Ok. I got the Big Max IP blade out for 18 holes today in a light rain.  Very easy to unfold. Very easy to fold closed. Held my bag nicely. Rolled nicely and was easily maneuverable. Very adjustable for the bag Size and the handle height.  Everything is nicely arranged on the handle. Very solid piece of machinery. Stability was pretty good....I think there are more stable ones on the market, but I was looking for one which folds down to a very small footprint. This thing fits that bill to a tee. The golf bag laid on top of it very nicely.   I would definitely buy it again.  I only have one concern with this push cart. The clip for the front wheel is a plastic piece that doesn’t look as though it is as beefy as it should be. Maybe I am wrong. Maybe this will never break....but this little piece to me looks like the weakest link.

Every time I try to get started on a Superspeed program, I get frustrated that the radar reads so low. Sometimes if I swing all out, it reads at like 70 mph. I have it on the golf setting and MPH. I believe that the device i receive is faulty, because its reading 30 mph lower than my actual swing speed. Tried to reach out to the company a long time back (way before any of the covid stuff was happening) and couldn't get a response. I think the radar is reading ok in terms of relative to itself. Should i just ignore that the radar reads so low and start the program?

I don’t think any of these Swing Speed radars are all that accurate compared to a Trackman. They do seem to be consistent with whatever speed they read however. I would just use 70 as your baseline and try to improve from there. Have you checked the batteries?
