  1. That's true, problem is I'm not sure if any place near me has them and to buy sight unseen and without demoing is a tough call. Plus, I would likely need a 12* (that I can loft down to 11* to open what looks like a slightly closed face) with a stiff, a tough combo to find
  2. I know I eventually need a new driver, and the Wilson Staff Triton is now down to $149.99 on all major retailers. It's tempting for sure, but I also might build my own.
  3. I see that Wilson's cut bait on the Triton and it can be had for $149.99. Tempting as I need a driver upgrade.
  4. Had one of those bipolar rounds in my skins game this morning. +8 on front, even par on the back. Didn't make a putt the whole round, had 5 birdies lip out. Won two skins though. Also payed a $5 Nassau against the other threesome, lost that too, Front and Total. So bet loss of a dollar. Not ideal.
  5. So, I got to thinking about this the other day after posting my WITB in the WIYB forum (shameless plug). I assume we all do it, but I was wondering what your nicknames for some of your clubs are or have been in the past. I'll start, my putter is the only club that has a nickname. I call it Mjolnir. I know that it would make more sense to have that as the name of a driver, but with the amount of weight my putter carries and that the flatstick is the one that deems you worthy, well it just kinda made sense. I also used to nickname my drivers. The first one was called Red, it was a Wilson Deep Red. My Mellow Yellow 420 went by Sunshine, and for a little bit I called my Nike Moon because of that little grey of the back and because I hit some moonshots with it. Now though, it's just the flatstick. So, I know some of you have cooler stories than that, let's hear em!
  6. So, got a day off from work yesterday and went to my local. Back nine was being green punched so I got in a quick nine. Worked on one thing the whole round, committing to full shots. Too often I like to try and get cute with less than full swing stuff and that leads sometimes to mechanical breakdowns. So given the choice today between 85% or 110%, I took 110% every time. Results? +1 round of 36. 6 pars, 2 bogeys, 1 birdie. Sure, there were still some shots I had to funk around with because of not having perfect yardage, but if it was close I found just trusting my natural swing instead of trying to manufacturing something was the best case scenario. Also, putted very well today. Highlight again came at our little downhill par 3. The pushed the tees up so it played around 100 yards instead of 115. Full swing power Sand wedge, stuck it to 3 feet. Hopefully there will be time for a few more rounds this year before the weather finally changes here in CNY, because I'm putting pretty well and feel like this was a real lightbulb type round.
  7. Not a Penn State guy, but it took maybe 4 years before Penn State was Penn State again. Matt Rhule turned Temple around in 2 years, in a weaker conference yeah, but also not as great a recruiting base. What really can help is a total clean out of everyone involved in the higher-ups at Baylor, that's where the problem with the parents lies as far as recruiting.
  8. I do follow the kicky-kicky. Started when I adopted the Croatian national team at WC98. Some would say it's the jerseys, others would say it's because Zvonimir Boban is an awesome name and he became my favorite player. Didn't get back into until college, but living freshman year in the international dorm will do that to you. Followed Boban to his club and became a fan of AC Milan, my number one team. I also follow all the major European Leagues to an extent. Also follow MLS, my college team (Syracuse) and our local NASL and Pro Indoor teams as well (Syracuse FC and Syracuse Silver Knights, respectfully). Perhaps the biggest thing to turn me on to footie in a big way was when my Aussie friend turned me on to Football Manager. That game is like crack. Thanks for that one Jamie. Lastly, proud to say that I have attended a few memorable soccer experiences. Caught a Europa League game in Paris between PSG (before the spending spree) and Benfica in 2011 and a USA v. Brazil friendly in Washington DC in 2013. I hope one day to just go wild on a Euro trip to catch a ton of games, but that will wait.
  9. Sure, why not? Growing up in the 90's, I was a big pro wrestling fan, and I still follow it loosely. I joined a forum on a website that celebrated the worst of wrestling called Wrestle crap in the early 00's. One of my favorite stupid gimmicks was a guy called Mantaur, a big dude who wore a real Buffalo head to the ring and pranced around like a Minotaur. Combine the first half of my last name with -taur and boom, magic. Most of my other handles on social media are name flips, like others mentioned but for forums this just makes me smile.
  10. Went to watch Syracuse in person against Middle Tennessee State on Saturday. Score at the end of a quarter was 3-2. I described it to a friend who wanted to know about it the game that it made me want to drink bleach. SU lost, 30-23. Long season in CNY me thinks.
  11. Played yesterday, played like garbage. Shot an 88, but won a skin. Round highlight was our short par 3. Hit a ball into the lateral hazard on a pull, bladed chip that hit cartpath went to back of green, then a one putt down a huge tier sliding to the left for a bogey. Got applause from the guys behind us on tee after the putt, gave them a hat tip. Made up for playing so bad all round.
  12. When I was in law school my and my friends used to go out and dominate the local bar trivia scene. I still want to get out to it, but now with everyone gone and nothing nearby it sucks. I'm also a huge soccer fan and love playing the Football Manager series of video games, think of it like extreme Dynasty mode where you don't get to play the games for soccer fans.
  13. If you aren't watching Crazy Ex-Girlfriend or Bojack Horseman you should be. That's my contribution to this. Also, The Tick on Amazon Prime is great as well.
  14. Subbed tonight in league. Straight up match with both of us off 5. I shot +3, he a +6. Highlight was the last, SW over a 120 ft tall tree from 65 yards to 2 feet for birdie on the par 5. Almost played it safe, decided for the challenge
  15. So, for the past two years I've been playing the older Maxfli U6 LC, with the triangle dimples inside the regular dimples. That ball is fantastic and I got a great deal on personalized dozens from Golfworks, 4 dozen for $60. Here's the problem, while working at Dick's I tried the newer Maxfli U6 and wasn't a huge fan. So, I've been experimenting with some balls this summer. I still have quite a few of the Maxflis, but I'm really liking the Srixon Q-Star Tour. I also got a sleeve of 2016 Chrome Softs that I've been ok with, but the price difference it's gotta be the Srixons once those Maxflis runs out. I used to be a huge Srixon loyalist so I'm really happy that I can continue to support one of my favorite companies with a super high quality and affordable ball.
  16. So, today was the day, the 4 club tournament. Full disclosure, I made a sub yesterday after a range session. 5 iron went out, 4 wood in. Weather was cold and course was wet so I needed a bit more distance. So the bag was 4 wood, 8 iron, GW, and putter. Shot 42-41 for 83. Should have done better. My undoing was the early start. I showed up on 4 hours of sleep after the fight last night and suffered 2 early doubles. Fought back to post +7 on the front. Back was cruising, +1 through 5, but 6 was a mental meltdown. Tried a punch 20 around 2 trees instead of punching back to the fairway and taking my chance from 85 yards and made a stupid triple. Made 2 birdies on the back with the par 5's going 4W-4W and chipping tight. In all, a fun round, a challenging round, and in it's own way a disappointing round because it could have been even better
  17. I just want to say, this thread is really inspiring for some of us who can't get out as much as we'd like to get out there and play more. Seeing everyone playing so well and seeing success every time you come into this thread is awesome!
  18. Congrats on the new career round, great playing! Also, I've finalized my 4 club bag, since it's supposed to be about challenging yourself I'm taking the woods out of my bag for this one. 5 Iron, 9 Iron, SW, Putter. Gonnaa be tough giving up my length, but the tournament's for fun and the prize is the one thing I don't need more of, more golf balls!
  19. Good tip, but my course has no bunkers and the rough isn't that deep. We'll see how I feel on the day and I'll update when I'm done.
  20. Got out yesterday to prepare for my last tournament of the year on Sunday. Played my home course, shot +2 37. Really it was about getting an idea of distances as the last tournament in a 4 club tournament. Thinking Driver, 8 Iron, Gap Wedge, Putter. Most par 4's are driver wedge for me, the longer ones I think are driver 8 or 7, par 3's will be tricky with only one of them covered, the other two will be funky driver shots, and Par 5's the goal is on in three and two putt. I was thinking of going 5 iron instead of driver since that's my 200 yard club and would help on par 3's, but it takes away my chances of easy birdies on short par 4's. I'm also thinking maybe 4 wood, 7 iron, GW, Putter. Decisions, decisions.
  21. Charity captain and crew today. Played with some good dudes who aren't really good golfers, but we had a blast and played some good golf. Shot a 65 for -5. Winning score was -9, but there was cheating out there. Highlight for me was the last three holes. 150 par 3, hit it to 7 feet, lipped the birdie. 475 par 5, driver to 140 out, cutting the corner, nine iron to 6 feet, eagle. 400 par 4, driver to 120, PW to 2 feet. Wish we could've kept playing as I was on fire. Just a slow start.
  22. I'm with you on that Rusty. I remember when I was a senior in high school I was the #1 on the team, but I never played with our #2 in a foursome. I always went out in matches with the younger guys and helped them with reads and club selection so that they could score well and just kept them loose. I had more fun doing that than competing against the #1's on most other teams. Also, I think it helps you as a player too. Caddying a round or two gets you thinking about how to tackle a course in a different way than you normally would. Also, an update from me. Played 9 this weekend at my home course, shot +1, 36. Made two birdies to counter one double. Stripe show off the tee and made some putts for the first time in a while. In all, felt good. Also, as an update to an earlier post, I'm back playing with the team from Dick's for this charity tournament. DWI guy is out, and I'm in. I didn't want to be in, but getting this charity the full donation amount from a team playing (as without me the team wouldn't play) is more important to me than the personal slights.
  23. I've been using the same Martini tee for nearly 3 years now. I also used to use only international coins in marking my golf ball, but not anymore.
  24. Very interested to see how year 2 of the Dino Babers experience is in the Dome. Was very fun last year to see a team that threw the ball around for fun and went for it seemingly all the time on 4th down. Downside, schedule is stupid hard thanks to prior AD's (LSU, really?) and the ACC Atlantic being a total bear with Louisville, FSU, and Clemson, plus crossovers games against Miami and Pitt. Hoping for a bowl game, but really hoping for visible improvement that shows even if the record doesn't because of that schedule.
