  1. I agree. I think that if your swing is wildly erratic you need lessons first. Until you have a relatively repeatable swing a fitting is a waste of time and money.
  2. Yeah but he was referring to how the manufacturers categorize their shafts. My Project X driver shaft is called a mid launch, mid spin shaft.
  3. " I look at it this way, in MGS testing the Kirkland V3 is a good 10 yds shorter than Maxfli Tours. My 81 yr old pard actually hits the V3 a little longer than MT's." It may be because he can't hit the MT's with enough spin to keep them in the air. The V3's spin a lot and will be shorter for a higher swing speed player but will actually help a sub 85mph player get more carry. So you are correct, we haven't seen the all of the impact of this change, yet. And I'll bet that there will be some of the DTC guys out of Taiwan, Korea, China and Viet Nam that will keep producing the old balls. The Japanese market has a number of clubs that sell well there that are technically non-conforming by USGA standards.
  4. Welcome to my world. I started playing again in 2003(after a long absence) because I was too old to play(and compete) at baseball/softball and basketball. Started out in 2003 as a 25 handicap and have worked my way down to 8-9. Still playing most courses from the "whites". Would like to maintain that for another couple years before moving full time to the golds. If this rule actually results in my swing losing 10-15 yards in 2030 then I'll be playing par 3 courses. Can't see me playing with my golf friends(most of whom are 20-30 years younger than me) when I might have to be playing from tees that are 50 yards ahead of them.(junior tees).
  5. Your doing a great thing for your dad. I hope he brings his "typical" swing. One of things I always wanted to try was to go for a fitting 3 or 4 times on different days just to see if the "optimum" club selection would change depending on the day, the fitter, my swing, etc. I'm not independently wealthy so it'll have to be a dream for now.
  6. Volvik already makes a non conforming version of it's balls. it's called the Magma. It's smaller and slightly heavier than a 'legal' ball. Don't see why manufacturers wouldn't continue to make their current balls while developing one ball for the pros. They could still sell it to the public albeit a higher price if you want to "play the ball the pros use."
  7. He might be hitting the 3's better than the 4's because the 4's are "de-lofted". Ping has recognized that for seniors with slower swing speeds the "game improvement" de-loft irons aren't always the best choice for slower swingers. My driver swing is 88-92 and my handicap went from a 12 to 8 when I went from GI irons to standard "pro loft" hybrid irons. My 7 iron is 35 degrees.
  8. Glad I could help. It's not genius. Many of the pros are going with 44 inch drivers to improve control. And I find it's better than cutting down the shaft. I only do it when I lose my driver. Soon as I'm back on track I'm back to 46 inch.
  9. No three wood is a not a problem. Just choke down 2-4 inches on the driver and try that.
  10. Doesn't everyone experience this? My fault is the same..trying to kill the driver. I try a couple things, not all at the same time. First, I try the Tommy Armour advice. Count 1, 2, pause in your backswing and fire on 3. Usually keeps me from overswinging. Another thing to try is you are hitting your 3 wood well off the tee is choke down on your driver 2-3 inches to approximate the same length as your 3 wood. I did that last week and the driver started going straighter and farther. Then gradually work your way back to full length.
  11. The only youtube videos I watch are from Dr Kwon. Much of golf instruction is biomechanically inefficient or just plain incorrect. Kwon has years of research and study using hi-speed camera analysis and studied human biomechanics. It must work since he's made himself into a plus handicap golfer.
  12. Has anyone here actually hit one of these? Found a review on Plugged In Golf that was interesting.(https://pluggedingolf.com/macgregor-mactec-driver-review/) At $129-149 these drivers are 1/4-1/3 of the cost of the current crop of "name" drivers and seem to perform pretty well. Based on the description of the materials used it appears that the big boys might be taking us to the cleaners. Based on a study a buddy and I did 10 years ago(he and I are both engineers in manufacturing businesses and he's a supply chain guy) we determined at that time that the actual MLO(material, labor and overhead) for a list price $300 driver was in the $75-90 range. I'm wondering if we estimated too high based on Macgregor current pricing.
  13. I looked into these a long time ago. Essentially for fast putts you hit more towards the toe of the putter; slow putts in the middle. Nice idea. But my problem is reading the putt properly and keeping the putter square to the line. My distance control in variety of conditions is pretty good. Tried all kinds of green reading methods and all seem to not help in any noticeable way.
  14. Arnold Palmer had a room in his house with over 400 putters in it. All the putters he used in his career. If it's good enough for him its good enough for me.<lol> I change putters among the 6 I own whenever I struggle on the green. I just hauled out the 50 yr old Bullseye this morning and played 18 holes with it. Shot a 77 and 30 putts and no 3 putts. Yesterday used my Tour Edge mallet and had 4,3 putts. For me sometimes just changing it up helps.
  15. Thanks for letting us know that the Kam Kaddie has no braking feature and about the size. Both are important to me. Didn't really appear in any other reviews. Save me some agony. It was worth it to pay the extra $240 for the Alphard Omni cart?v2 combo. Breaks down into two pieces and fits WITH my cart bag in my 2005 Civic's trunk with room to spare. Since I play courses with hills and elevated tees/greens the braking feature is a must.
  16. Haven't hit my friend's, yet. Went to a shop that had trackman and hit my Honma I have to establish a baseline. Then hit the pxg. My usual impact on the face is pretty centered but above the centerline, where I've been told gets you the best results. With the Honma that spot got me smash factors of 1.46 -1.49. Trackman showed the impact position which Foresight didn't.(we also checked it with a little foot spray). With the PXG I never got above 1.4 in that spot. While hitting, I mishit one low on the face and it came back with a SF of 1.46. Nice but the trajectory and spin were terrible. I'm sticking with the Homna.
  17. Bought it from a pro shop that got it on trade in from a regular customer. Not sure where he got it. If it is a fake, it's extremely well done. Will see when I compare it to my buddy's driver.
  18. The HZRDOUS Black 6.0 is a standard selection for the Gen 5 for stiff shafts. Specs are 60 grams, 3.5 Torque, Stiff, Low Spin according to the markings on the shaft. We'll probably try both shafts with both heads, since he'll want to hit mine, also. Forgot to ask what shaft he has.
  19. Sorry if I've come off as dismissive of everyone's ideas, not my intention. I only looked at data where I had dead center strikes for both clubs. Attack angles, dynamic launches, etc. were all within a degree or 2 of each other. Shafts are both similar specs. 60 grams, low torque, low spin. The PXG is a 6.0 Hazardous(Stiff) The Homna is a Vizard FP-6X which they call X-stiff but on a Golfworks "bend board" measures more towards stiff than X-stiff. My buddy that just got the same driver(new from PXG) 2 weeks ago has agreed to let me borrow his to test (talked to him at lunchtime) so that should tell me something.
  20. Thanks for the thoughts guys. 1. Hard to believe that the 3 measurement devices are all reading the PXG head speed too high. I guess it's possible, but I think unlikely since I think we'd have heard that from others. 2. Smash factor is a function of ball speed and club head speed. Shafts typically might affect spin, launch and dispersion but would have a "microscopic" affect on smash factor. This according to the guys I talked to at PXG and 2 fitters I know. 3. The tolerance difference of the CT might be the answer. Especially if the PXG is below the lower limit and the Honma is at the upper. I guess the lesson for me is when you buy used ya don't know what you are getting. If I had bought new I could have complained and gotten a replacement. Thanks again, guys.
  21. I doubt it's a damaged head since the sound is right on what my friends sounds like(I haven't had him hit it yet on a monitor). The spin and launch angle are almost dead on to my Honma. Typically around 2000-2100 rpm and 14-16 degree launch. Ball speed is around 125-130mph but that's the same speed I get with my Honma but I swing the PXG almost 5 mph faster.
  22. With that bad a number I'd say that if that were true their tolerances suck. I beginning to believe you might be right and if I hadn't bought it used I might have recourse with PXG. Afraid I may just be stuck.
  23. Has anyone had issues with their PXG 0311 Gen 5 driver? I bought one used for a very good price. Should have known that was a red flag. It's not counterfeit; checked the serial number with PXG and it looks identical to one a buddy just bought. The problem is that I've tested it on PRGR, Rapsodo and Foresight(at PGA superstore) launch monitors and never been able to get the smash factor better than 1.36. I've used foot powder and only count the center strikes. With my current gamer(Honma Tr20) I regularly hit 1.45-1.48. I've let others swing it and no one has gotten above 1.35. Anyone else seen or heard issues like this. I'm a bit suspicious since ebay sales of used gen 5's are thru the roof. Like 40 of them since March 15th(it's the morning of the 18th) virtually all of them sold by PXG Express which is in Scottsdale. Any thoughts, folks?
  24. Like the title says the discount code does not work on the golf galaxy site. Tried it this morning right after I got the email from "Bennett".
  25. I don't play weekends much anymore due to slow play at some local courses. I will play weekends at certain courses with my friends just because that is the only time they can play. Even though I don't like slow play there was one time when it worked out for me. I was playing really well. Got to the the 14th at one under par. Took 40 minutes to play 14 and I birdied it. So I'm 2 under going to 15. We look and there are 4 groups waiting on 15. The guys I'm playing with look at me and " say we'll stay if you want to". I said, "no way. If I have to play this slow for the last 4 holes I'm sure I'll screw up this round". We went home and now I have a 2 under round to talk about.
