  1. For the moment, my Cobra F9 is staying in the bag.

I've done a little bit of testing against the Darkspeed LS and AI Smoke drivers. The F9 is certainly keeping up with the new kids on the block, with the Darkspeed (using same shaft) and AI Smoke being only 2-3mph faster on ball speed.

In terms of forgiveness, I think the AI Smoke is more forgiving and it looks the best behind the ball.

Ultimately, I think this is the year that I will be saying goodbye to the F9 as it is looking a bit tired at the moment, with there being small paint-marks on the crown from interactions with the practice hitting nets at my home club. I have a wide swing path, similar to Rickie Fowler, so when hitting driver, I've occasionally made contact with the net.

If I am to replace my F9, it will have to be a choice between the Callaway AI Smoke TD, Ping G430 LST (a few of the members at my club have them in the bag) and Cobra Darkspeed LS drivers.

  2. Sorry that I'm a bit late to the party, but I used to live in Brisbane and was a member at Nudgee Golf Club for a year or so. Reasonable course near the airport which I think would've been in your price range (~$1500/year I think). However, due to it being very close to a big creek and only a few kilometres from the ocean, it does get very wet very easily.

If you ever get the chance to come to Perth in Western Australia, let me know and I'll try and organise a game.

  3. Yeah, it was a nice, hot Australia Day (the designated public holiday) in Perth, with a top temperature of 38 degrees (100.4 Fahreneheit).

Whilst we didn't have the big bushfires over here in Western Australia, we did cop a big cyclone (hurricane) which subsequently flooded the mine site I work at.

  4. I've been using a combination of Pro V1X (both white and yellow - liking the yellow!), Srixon z-star XV and Taylormade TP5.

Out of all of them, I prefer the yellow Pro V1X - interesting but likeable feel, very easy to spot in the air (but not always easy to spot when surrounded by leaves!), and it great spin and roll around the greens.

  5. Congrats on the new driver! I had a similar fitting the other day at my local golf store. I recently won AU$350 in a year-long tipping comp (came 4th), and had some other vouchers so I took the opportunity.

I went into the fitting thinking I'd walk out with an Epic Flash Sub Zero being the Callaway fanboy I am. I was a bit disappointed with the Epic Flash when compared with the Cobra F9 and Taylormade M5.

In the end it came down to the M5 and F9, with the F9 beating the M5 on accuracy. Difference in distance was 1-2yd for the M5, so not much in it.

I eventually settled on the Cobra F9 with an Atmos Black X7 shaft, and I've been hitting a few more fairways than usual.

Spent about 2 hours on the range this morning dialing in the driver and changing some settings. The most optimal solution for me was to put the weight in the back and go to +1° in the Draw setting. I was just hitting bombs. I hit 11 in a row in between about a 30 yd channel that I picked out.

Hopefully I can take this on to the course as I feel like drivers been really holding me back recently.

Someone's been looking at Lefty's twitter account!

  7. I'm SO looking forward to hitting this driver!! Loved the G400 LST, and was smoking the G410 - albeit with a little bit too much spin, so this could be the club for me! Either that or get fitted for the Epic Flash SZ.

Well written Plaid. I guess the SLDR is just the club you can groove, and no matter what the OEM’s say there is no way their technological advanced design can beat any club that you have complete confidence in.

I am rooting for Tour Edge though. I liked reading Barbajo’s post on his visit there and love seeing the little guy make it.

I'm glad that you've enjoyed using your SLDR for as long as you have Plaid. If you do pick the Exotics driver, hopefully it'll last just as long in your bag. I've hit the EXS driver a few times at a golf store nearby but they don't tend to have many in stock and they are the only place in Australia that actively has them which is a great shame.

In Sydney I think the "must plays" would be The Australian Club and New South Wales GC.

It's difficult to get into both of these clubs. Unfortunately, I live in Perth on the other side of the country. I've got a friend in Sydney who recommends Twin Creeks GC (hosts the NSW Open, but is private club), and look at ISeekGolf for other recommendations, as well as the Australian golf Facebook forums.

  10. I just went to try out the ST-190 driver against the Callaway Rogue Sub Zero on the launch monitor after not swinging a club for a week. Rogue came back with a swing speed of 108mph, 233m carry and little pulls (shaft wasn't really working for me). The Mizuno came back with SS of 114mph (average), 238m carry and very straight (and I could hit little cuts and fades with it!!!). As soon as the ST190 comes down in price, I will be getting one!!

  11. I've been a big fan of the Apex hybrid since it came out. I used to have the X2 Hot 3 hybrid but was overdrawing it as my swing speed increased. Bought the OG Apex and loved it ever since. The only time it wasn't in my bag was when I got picked to test the i200s, I was given a 3 iron (I assumed the set would be 4-PW) so I used that for a while instead of the Apex. However, I later went back to the Apex and haven't looked back. Probably one of my most reliable clubs in the bag at the moment.

I really like the look of the new hybrid but there are 3 things that worry me a bit:

    1. The glossy black finish - I really like the grey finish on mine (I'm not sure what kind of finish the original had - Matte?)
    2. The feel of the new one might be a firm, similar to the Rogue. I really like the softer feel of the original Apex.
    3.  The bottom of the new club looks a bit busy with the addition of the Jailbreak bars and extra lettering - I know that this isn't really an issue like the other 2 points as you won't see the bottom of the club at address but it'll still be on my mind.

I'll be definitely trying out the new hybrid, but it has to be pretty good to knock my current hybrid out of the bag.

  12. The one thing I noticed the other day was that the GPS+Pro won't log in a less than 9 hole round. I was playing my home course on Sunday afternoon, with the purpose of catching up with some friends who were a few holes ahead of me. I finished the first 2 holes (a par 4 & par 5) in -1, skipped the 3rd hole and joined up with my mates. I played out the remaining 6 holes with the watch showing no complaints.

Once I got home and tried to sync the round, the phone app said that I didn't have enough shots entered for the round to be legitimate. That kinda sucks, as not only did I play well (+1 thru 8 holes!), but I drove the green on the short 6th hole (would've been a nice bit of bragging rights, and increased my driving length average).

I haven't hit anything Cobra since I'm a Ping/Callaway guy. My G400 LST will stay in my bag for until something really fantastic can knock it out- probably a few years out still. But my 3-wood is an 816 so its almost 3 years old, and the f8s get good reviews so maybe.

Will the F9 be available as a 3-wood soon?

Yeah, the F9 is coming in fairway wood as well as hybrid & irons (including single-length of course).
