Here's where I will throw something into the discussion and see what kind of reaction I get.  I am 77 years old and I have seen members of my club who are a little than I am and pretty good players go for a fitting and they wound up being fitted for upgraded shafts in their irons adding $200 to the cost of each iron.  Another fellow I played with is a 20 handicap and went for a driver fitting and wound up paying $450 for an upgraded shaft.  Perhaps I am a skeptic but I just cannot believe that club manufacturers do not have stock shafts that would work in both of these instances.  Somebody please explain to me what those upgrades could possibly do to justify that kind of expenditure.

My reaction is I'm 100% in agreement with you.  I'm all in favor of 20 handicaps getting fit.  Many people will say they need lessons before fitting.  BS, sure nobody says not to take lessons, but they (20 caps) can be fit and help their game as well.

@GolfSpy_KFT beat me to the Club Champion suggestion, it 100% sounds like something they would do.  And I agree he could benefit from any stock shaft from any major OEM, unless he is one of two things.  1% of the higher handicaps that actually fit into an exotic shaft, or has so much money to burn and only wants the most expensive of whatever he's buying.

So no you are not a skeptic, it sounds like your friend unfortunately fell into the sales practice of Club Champion.

Maybe it helps if the fitter is near a good golf course.  I had good experiences near popular golf courses.  A small 1 man shop near the Tony Lema course in San Leandro (SF area).  A small 2 man shop in Carlsbad, the mother lode of golf, and then at a busy retailer / driving range (Carlsbad Golf Center) also in Carlsbad.  The store and fittings are now part of GolfMart.  They used to have multi-brand demo days 2x a year until the virus.  If you want to do your own fitting, they give you free range balls to use when trying clubs.  Plus a modern school or individual fittings with the store fitters.

I said this before, if you can take a vacation to San Diego, you can schedule fittings at PXG, Evnroll, KBS, Scotty, Indi Golf King of Spin wedges, and 2 of the local World Wide / Golf Marts have outdoor ranges, the one in Carlsbad and in Del Mar, where the Surf eats the Turf.  I don't know if Callaway, Titleist, TM, and Cobra do fittings at their HQ.  There are 3 Golf Tecs.  You can't go wrong.  And San Diego is a great vacation place.  There is even a great but small winery town, Ramona, 40 miles east of San Diego.

Titleist does offer public fittings for a fee at TPI, it's like hitting off the most immaculate conditions you will find out side of Augusta.  Callaway offers fittings at it's indoor facility at HQ but takes a special invite to get to the the Eli Callaway Performance Center (it's version of TPI) and same with TaylorMade Kingdom, usually a call from your Head Pro if they are a TaylorMade account can get you a time, but they are booked up months and months in advance.   The Kingdom in Reynolds Lake GA is easier to book into, but not very close to San Diego 🙂

It’s a double edged sword - it’s nice when he gets the new equipment and I get to try it, but then I want it and have to find a way to hide it from the wife 😂

So for drivers and putters it's easy.  Just keep the old head covers and put them on the new clubs and just say "This old thing?  I've had it forever, I just cleaned it up nicely"   🙂

For irons, you just go the "I won these in a Twitter or IG contest" 🙂

I am currently playing the Smoke triple diamond and I would like to know your opinion on the sound. A buddy of mine said it sounds like the crack of a wooden bat instead of the metal bat my cobra F9 used to make.

It definitely didn't sound like the metal baseball bat sound.  I recall it being a pretty nice slightly above muted sound.  I know the Paradym of last year was pretty muted sounding.  But I think this one has a b it more sound but in a good way.  I'll try and take note of it today.

I guess I haven’t been following the cycle, used to play a lot in high school, but never followed the gear too much for releases since I couldn’t afford it. Then got married and had kids, so I didn’t play for a while. Started up again in 2020/21, but since then, it felt like every year there were new drivers, but maybe that’s only Taylormade. Sim, sim 2, stealth, stealth 2, qi10, were those all year over year? Seems like Titleist releases are a bit slower? Or did I miss the release for TM too?

Yeah, Titleist, Mizuno and Srixon/Cleveland are pretty much always 2 year release cycles.

    Titleist already noted.

Srixon will typically release the Z line of irons and woods in January of Odd years, so last year 23 and then in 21, 19.   The other even years will typically be a Cleveland release year, see this years release of XL LIneup.

Mizuno alternates' the JPX and Mizuno Pro Lines.  Fall of 2023, 21 were Mizuno Pro models This fall 2024 should bring the JPX release of at least the Hot Metals, they may hold the JPX Tour and Forged until January...that's what they did with the JPX23 models.

TaylorMade  typically has a new release every January of drivers and a corresponding iron lineup, see Qi10 last years Stealth 2 etc.    The P series irons are more mixed. Typically they are in the fall.  The P790 may be one fall, and the next fall such as this coming fall should bring updates to the player line of P  the P7MB, P7MC and P770.

PING is anywhere from an 18 tol 24 month cycle, but more so than anything else, they go by, they release something when it's an improvement over something they may have out.   It's the reason the G430 10K came this year only 12 months after the main line of G430.     This spring PING is releasing the G730 and G530 irons, the 730 replaces a 3 year run of the G710 and the G535 has been about 18 months I believe.

That's probably more than you wanted to know and with some of those companies, it's always subject to change.

Will be keeping an eye out for results for a buddy of mine, specifically on the Qi10. I've had good luck with my Paradym, but he can't seem to get enough of the new equipment coming out 😅

You're friend sounds like someone I could get along with very well 🙂

Interesting, I wonder why they do a different release than the rest. Do you think they will be coming out with new irons?

They have a 2 year release cycle for irons and woods.  Irons typically in the late summer of odd years, 2023, 2021, 2019, 2017.  Etc.

Then woods in even years 2024, 2022, 2020 etc.   i think it was 2020 the last time they relased in the fall vs the late summer.

The current T series irons just came out last August, so no new irons until summer of 2025.

I have only hit a Titleist driver once, someone I was playing with had one many years ago and was a lefty…I was struggling with my driver at the time.  One swing and it was long and down the middle.  Might need to look more into their drivers…

The current TSR line has been hailed from tour pros to regular joes as the besf drivers on the market.  And from TSR1 designed for slower swing speeds like 90 mph and below to the TSR 4 which ie ulta low spin they have a model for all abilities.
The TSR 3 is the most common model on tour and the TSR2 fits 80% of golfers the best.

You should definitely try and ger the chaance to be fit for one.

Is there a front runner with the time you’ve had so far?  Any surprises, good or bad?

The Qi10 has had the best combination of accuracy and distance.  The PING 10 K has been the most accurate by a slight margin.

The Ai Smoke has been ok but nothing special. It may benefit most of all thw heads from the shaft i have coming in

  8. Both @cnosil and @jaskanski have hit on really good points and not a lot to add to that other than, it's very unlikely to hurt you in any way, well except for maybe your bank account 🙂

But as you spend more time around here you will here that very rarely will someone play their best golf with all clubs being from the same manufacturer.  Now,  I have pretty close to a full Titleist bag, so don't go by what I do but what I say 🙂

The Mavericks were probably perfect for you when you started, but if you are on the cusp of breaking 80, there is likely some improvements that can be made.   That said, there is no reason you can break 80 with those just as well   We have at least one plus  index golfer here who won city championships playing  PING G700 irons.

So enjoy the process and welcome to the industry.  I've been working in it for 10 years from, sales to operations to fittings, let me know if I can help you in any way.

  9. I haven't switched styles, I've been using the interlocking pretty much my whole golf life.

However, I've known for years I've had a pretty week grip, but instructors I've worked with all said, it was "fine for now"  I guess they thought I had bigger issues...ha

But last week on the range, a friend who I have golfed with for 7 years asked me if I ever tried a stronger grip...this was as I was hitting high weak fade after weak fade.  I told him the above about the instructors, and he said, give it a try just to see.  So I did and after one or two tops.   I started hitting drives on a straight rope.

This was pretty constant for about 20 shots before I called it a day.   He thought it would add a few yards as ell since the ball will be landing going forward and not the the right.

It was definitely a different feel and one I had to take extra notice of before the shot to make sure I was "seeing 3 knuckles"   I'll definitely continue to work with it and see where it goes from here.

For those of us on a fixed income, it can seem that golf will become unaffordable in the near future.  However, as others have stated, there are ways to play cheaply.  One thing I have never understood is buying clothing (other than shoes) that is golf specific.  A decent pair of slacks and polo style shirt can be bought for about a fifth of the prices of golf brands.  And "golf" belts just make me think of P. T. Barnum's famous saying.  And golf hats with the company's logo? In that case you are paying the company for the privilege of advertising its product.

My first experience with a golf brand vs regular consumer brand product and the price difference was range finders about 18 years ago.

The Bushnell or Nikon I was looking at was around $300 I think back then.   A friend suggested I go to Bass Pro Shops and look a them.  Sure enough pretty much the same caliber of range finder there was like $220 or something like that.    Golfers are suckers...we'll pay through the nose for things...ha

I knew even before I clicked the link that John was going to be the author 😆

I still feel like the previous iterations looked better, but that's more personal preference. These are very clean and I'm betting based on past reviews, will both feel and perform very well. Solid release from W/S.

I not only knew that as well, I also knew he was going to love them!  Not because he's a Wilson homer...well maybe a little bit...ha   But because I hit them a month ago and I couldn't stop hitting them, even when the rep needed to leave.  They felt so good and just flat out performed.

I respect everyone's thoughts.  But I honestly don't see how some are saying they are no different than the D9 Forged. I don't think they have hit them to say that.   I had the D9 Forged for a couple months and they were nice, but no where near the performance of these.

I didn't like these as much as previous iterations when I saw leaked photos, but they are growing on me, a lot.  Wilson got the looks right with all three releases this year.  I wish they would have continued with the new shield for continuity sake; but that doesn't matter.  Cannot wait to see these in person!

Well, you just might get to see a set in Williamsburg 🙂

Thanks for sharing this Jamie. 👍

I also have a friend here who knows the owner of a restaurant named "Shorty's" in Williamsburg, but they haven't been there or could provide any details about it.

Maybe someone from that area may chime in with some remarks about it, if they visited it?

So two of my favorite places for dinner in Williamsburg are  both a bit on the nicer side than diners.  But for dinners I've always loved  Trellis, mainly because of their famous desert Death by Chocolate  and a nice steak  and seafood house right outside the gates of Kingsmill called Whaling Company.

Wondering a few things as well. Does this resort deliver breakfast to the condos like they did at Pinehurst? Trying to figure out if we need to do some type of food shopping since we will be late checking in on Thursday due to playing Royal New Kent at 2:00. Inquiring stomachs want to know. 🤣

I'm pretty sure our package does not include breakfast, but I'll check on it to be sure.
