  1. 20 years ago, I became a stay-at-home dad of twins. While it was great for the first couple of years, I didn't get a chance to play. One day, my wife suggested I go hit the range at our local club Brambleton in Ashburn, VA. After hitting a large bucket, I see a sign for "Free Golf" which was their recruiting for volunteers. I was hooked and started working one day a week as a starter/marshal. Did that for over a year until we packed and moved to Vegas. Was working in casino security and really got to hate it especially post-Covid and remembered how much I enjoyed working in golf. Took a job at a course where I was outside service supervisor while learning to work pro shop as well. Now, I am assistant pro at a top 10 course in Nevada. The work is very easy compared to throwing out drunks and dealing with passive-aggressive bosses plus I play every week during my days off. I do enjoy my work and will stay in it until I retire in 10 years; however, I understand what other posters have stated working in the golf industry.
  2. Still gaming my 34" Marilyn for about 17 years now, been a great putter.
  3. Vegas lost a gem back in December when Royal Links shut down for housing. This has been a trend the last few years with Silverstone, Badlands, Black Mountain and now Royal Links closing. Now word just came out that Desert Pines is next on the chopping block soon for housing/parks. With water at a premium and demand for housing up, Vegas will probably lose 1/3 to 1/2 of the remaining courses in the next 20 years.
  4. My experience was positive. A year ago, I got a bonus from now former employer and decided to get a new driver to replace my Callaway Diablo 10.5 degree. Made an appointment and met the fitter Julian who had me warm up. After warm up, he took my numbers using the Diablo which showed 3-4k sidespin thus getting a lot of fades as well as loss of distance (180-220 yards). We tried different manufacturers and shafts but found excellent results with the TSi2 9 degree with 60 gram Hzrdus smoke shaft which gave me 20 more yards on the monitor while reducing my sidespin to 2k or less. Now I am not an expert on components but I can see enough data to get the driver. I placed the order at ~ 650 with fitting waived and was told 6-8 weeks which turned more into 11 but once I got it, it has become a fairway finder and now I am hitting it between 240-260. Could I have gotten those numbers at any big box location or independent fitter, maybe so and then again maybe not. Golf here in Vegas is transient with stores and courses closing left and right. I just learned recently that Julian is no longer with CC so while I am very happy with my purchase, someone else may not. As with a lot of things, YMMV.
  5. Live in Vegas and usually enjoy playing SM. Joleen, what has happened with the bunkers?
  6. Great review, I saw the bag 2 weeks ago at GG and got me wanting one. Will be curious to see how it does in cart, look forward to seeing your review. Sent from my SM-G781V using MyGolfSpy mobile app
  7. I picked up a box when they arrived at my local Costco. I've put 3 rounds on them and they are fairly straight, don't really see any loss off driver and putt pretty well. Best positive I can give is that the ball checks up with no roll out unlike other balls in low/mod price range. Only negative is that it does scuff pretty easy but overall for the price, it's good. Now if they would come out in yellow. Sent from my SM-G930V using MyGolfSpy mobile app
  8. So did anyone go to Avenel to watch Tiger et al? Watching it now and seeing Francesco Molinari tear it up. Course looks a little beat up from all that weather.
  9. So I know you guys in the DMV have been saturated with a ton of rain but did anyone get out yesterday? I played for the first time in a month playing Angel Park Palm course, driving was good, fairway wood and hybrids were hit and miss. Greens were so bumpy that putting couldn't be much. Kids last day of school is Thursday so more golf to be played.
  10. Welcome to the forum, I can easily say that you will play with a group of good guys. Everybody is easy going and it doesn't matter if you're scratch or a 36-handicap.
  11. I want to come back out next year for my 35th HS reunion. So if I don't run into any complications, we need to set up an outing. I'll keep you all on the loop as I know more.
  12. Good to hear from you friend. Miss the days of riding together and you cracking jokes while making sick short game shots. Shadow Creek has been one course I haven't played yet; although, it will happen one day probably once kids get out of school and I'm not paying astronomical fees for soccer clubs.
  13. Going good bud, glad to hear from you. Anytime you want to come out, let me know and bring your sticks. I can hook you up on discounts on rooms at either mine or wife's casino and rounds at Paiute.
  14. Lol, that is so true about MdGolfHacker. He would do such a great job in organizing the outings. That is something that I miss the most out here because it doesn't exist being a 24-hour town. I'm trying to organize a summer league with my co-workers where we would play different courses but it will never get to the 12+ person outings we had back then. Every now and then I play the Vegas Golf Tour which is a cool relaxed par +3 max league and a Meetup group.
  15. That is good, missed the old group when we were having outings at Mattaponi, Renditions, etc. I joined a club out here (Silverstone) which went downhill and later closed and been a member of Paiute ever since. Don't have a steady group to play with, just a couple of guys I work with, play more with my wife and enjoy it more with her. Kids get out of school on 24th so we'll have early rounds together while they play their video games.
  16. That is wild, I was wondering what site you guys were on so I was checking THP, WRX, etc. and just stumbled across the thread today. Pretty much done with the other sites, they've turned into what the GC forums became. So it's good I can catch up on what outings you guys are playing this year.
  17. Hey there DMV golfers, Golfinvegas (formerly Golfinnova) John checking in, just brousing and came across some familiar names. Glad to see the DMV thread and find my friends from the old GC forums. Played a lot of rounds with GolfSpy Rob, MdGolfHacker and TheWahoo, great set of guys. Hard to believe it's already been 10 years since we left Ashburn for the bright lights of Vegas. Good thing is I get to play year round but I get so busy with life that I haven't played as much as I would like. If anyone is making the trip out here anytime soon and looking for a discount at Paiute, give me a shout and I'll hook you up. Have a good one!
