Hit a small bucket this morning at the range before "work", I've been chomping at the bit to get back out for some practice for two reasons. First, I was disappointed in my last practice session, which admittedly I wasn't in the right headspace for. Second, @Wedgie very graciously let me borrow a set of One Lengths to try out to see how I liked them.

So after one bucket... please allow me to say I like them VERY MUCH. I started with 7i because I know what my "usual" distance & flight is with that club using range balls. From there I jumped to 5i, which I hit low but holy cow so straight. From there I moved up to wedges which honestly didn't take much adjustment to hit. I've read to just take a normal swing with them and not go slow or hit softer due to the shaft length, and I hit some towering shots. I ended with driver, my first ball was a worm burner and I immediately thought "oh man here we go again". Then I realized that I was tensing up and had a death grip on the downswing. I eased up and relaxed my wrists & arms and what do you know - decent (for me) drivers to end the bucket.

I'm hoping I can get out again tomorrow to hit these irons some more.

My pleasure!  On the 5 iron try moving it forward a hair in your stance.  It will make a big difference, at least it does for me.

  2. Played a member/member over the weekend.  Various formats each 9 holes and low score wins.  We shot a 28 in the 2 man scramble portion to take a 2 stroke lead with 9 to go.  My partner is putting from the fringe and during his practice stroke he knocks the ball backwards.  If he were on the green or tee box it isn't a penalty stroke.  I guess on the fringe it is.  When he did putt he left himself a 1 footer for double and missed it.  We lost by 2 strokes but had a ton of fun....other than that hole.

at a minimum 4 bucks a ball losing one of these hurts.

I'll stick with the more affordable Srixons.

If there are 3 brands I "trust" for consistency that seem to 'own' the process from beginning to end it would be Titleist, Bridgestone and Srixon.

Snipped from the 2019 ball report....

There’s quite a bit of difference when it comes to who makes what and where. I may have covered this before, but since I happened to see this comment pop-up.

Titleist and Bridgestone differ from the rest of the industry in that they make their own rubber/synthetic rubber. Apart from the rawest of materials, they own the product from end to end.
USA consumers may care that both have factories in the US.
Srixon has similar capabilities in its factory in Indonesia.
Callaway has a factory in Massachusetts where it makes some of its balls (including Chrome Soft), but to the best of my knowledge, it does not make its own rubber.
TaylorMade has a factory in the USA, however, its balls are made overseas with the US-based factory’s function limited to putting the covers on the balls.
To the best of my knowledge, nobody else owns the factory where their balls are produced.

I've been gaming the 2020 Top Flite Gamer and my index is down to 6.6 with it.  Never been lower.  Even the caddies at Baltusrol laughed at it.  I won't hold my breath for the ball lab testing on this ball.

So, as a way to put a bow on this fantasy season, I guess it's time for me for put together the closing post.

First, a congratulations to @Apolloshowl for his victory. It was tight there at the end but having 4 guys seemed to be the way for him to get it done. Having been involved in a review opportunity with him in the past, I know he'll make great use of that golden ticket and put forth an incredible review for all of you guys when he gets his choice.

Second, I want to thank all of our players for this season. Thank you for being flexible with us. Obviously 2020 has been a battle for everyone, but we're happy that we were able to bring this league to a fitting and rousing conclusion and a worthy winner.

Third, a huge thank you to my fellow commissioners @GolfSpy STUDque and @Undershooter. We may have had our disagreements about things and how we needed to set things up, but I wouldn't do this with any other dudes... except maybe @Bucky CC *wink wink*.

Fourth, The 2021 Fantasy Season will likely start sometime around January, just so you know. We normally start with the California Swing for those of you who are new, but that's normally our start so keep watching this space.

Fifth, we understand that we are not above reproach as commissioners. Should you have any suggestions as how to improve our league, either post them here or hit us with a private message. If we can make it happen we will try to do it. I know we're at least going to look at lineup options, moving away from the best ball format of this year to make choosing a lineup imperative. But if you think scoring if off, we need to change the schedule, anything, let us know

Lastly, I hope all of you enjoy the off season and watching these next two majors as fans. We'll see you in 2021!

Thanks to all of you for putting this together and congrats to Apolloshowl on the win.

  5. Tell me... how much do you tip a caddie who gives you wrong information about distance AND makes you rake bunkers that he was responsible for you being in?  Inquiring minds want to know.

I was a guest at the club and my member buddy told me to give him a hundred bucks so I did. I think the going rate for the caddie is $70 so it was a $30 tip. I had to fix my divots as well which I kind of expected him to do but I guess my expectations are established by what I see on TV watching the pros.

Callaway Sure Out Wedge Review - Golfalot

Thanks buddy!  The real kick in the nads is we had to use a caddie and he told me to club up and both times he did I flew the green and landed in bunkers.  Took me two shots to get out each time.  Then the d-bag made me rake my own bunkers.  I have never hit my irons as crisp as I did the other day but it was like playing on carpet the fairways were so nice.

The round today much felt better than my last (2 week hiatus) where it felt like I had never played the game before. Contact was phenomenal today and was bombing some drives consistently. Chipping felt realllllly good which I needed today after my last abomination. Approach was short today which I chalk up to very high humidity and we have had some rain which took some roll out of a lot. Overall 42 with some just overall great shots:

Now that I have some good Arccos data there is clearly (which I figured was going to be but is very apparent now) a need for the gap wedge (need to re-pair now that I have 52/56/60 not 50/54/58 but the numbers are fairly accurate). 30 yard gapping between PW and 52 is just not acceptable...most likely be dropping the because the hybrid and 5 iron are pretty versatile and need the bottom end covered better.

Ended the day with this beauty short side bunker....didnt end well:

Bunkers killed me the other day and cost me a couple of additional strokes.  I really need to work on that.

  8. I had the chance to play the upper course at Baltusrol on Tuesday.   I'm pretty sure I had the only American made car in the lot.  They are redoing the lower course but the place as a whole is unbelievable.  The history in the clubhouse alone is worth the visit.  Anyway, shot a 40/40 for 80 from the club tees so it was only at 6200 yards.

What a stunning summer morning.  This week the competition is all about FW and GIR so I went to the course with a different mindset than I normally do.  I was going to aim for the fat part of the fairway (within reason) and the middle back of the green on approaches.  All I have to say is damn... I might have to play that way more often.  Or maybe it was just the extra focus knowing that the real games have begun.

Here’s a link to my instagram post with some photos and videos of todays action:

    And onto some key highlights:

    New/Tied Personal Bests:

    Score: 75 (+3)

    Arccos Handicap: 5.8

Birdies: 4 (ties my personal best)

    Long Drive:  317 yards

    Fairways Hit - 6/14 (43%) - ties baseline

Greens in Reg - 11/18 (61%) vs 8/18 in baseline

I’m ecstatic with this start but I’m still wanting to get those Fairway Hit numbers higher for this week’s challenge.  I should have one more opportunity to get 18 holes in, but I know my competitors will be giving it their all too!

I’ll end this post with a photo of the 17th green, a par 3.  The Forged Tec irons have been REALLY solid for me on par 3’s... I’ve been getting a lot of quality birdie looks out of them which is not usual for me.  Hopefully more good rounds to come!

That is a great score at that course but those are some big greens.  Want to come to the club again?

    Thanks, Cody! 🙏🏼

It only helped that Cobra finally got the Modus 105 stiff shafts in stock ... quickly pulled the trigger. And it’s why I was asking you earlier about your current shafts in the SZ irons ... some of the reviews have said they’re somewhat similar (Taper Lites and Modus) in their makeups.

Welcome to the club!  They are a ton of fun to play and my scores are dropping plus a lot of birdies.  Full swing wedges are so much more accurate for me.  Club Champion should have my new set ready this week so they will go head-to-head with the off the rack set I'm using now.  I hope the losing set finds a good home to someone that wants to try them.

  11. Curious whether your fitter used a shaft optimizer device (i.e. Mizuno)?

He did not. In fact I wasn’t very impressed. He had never fit for single length irons before but he understood the numbers he was seeing. I’ve been playing really well with my off the rack clubs so I picked up a second set for the new shafts. Based on feel alone the new shafts are superior to the stock graphite I have now. Picked up about 6 yards a club, straight as an arrow and spin was up about 1,000 rpm.
