  1. 2 over 74 on Saturday that included 2 holes where my playing partners bet me I couldn't make par swinging with one hand. 2 under 70 today; shaky start but turned at 1 under. Putter went cold on the back, all pars minus a 2-putt birdie. Even Steven for the weekend; quiet as a cat burglar.
  2. Hot damn, Kenneth! That's a salty inward half in the wind, Sir.
  3. Everyone should experience playing at altitude sometime. The golf ball flies long and straight. The first Summer after moving up here from TX, I was always 3-5 yards right of target because the baby draw just refused to turn in the thin air. Additionally, the views around here are not too shabby.
  4. The Colorado front range treated us to incredible weather yesterday; 70 degrees, big blue skies and zero wind. I'm heading out for another full loop today. Soil temperature is still too chilly to start mowing greens so I'd describe the pace as a meandering 4 on the stimp but on the plus side we are off permanent winter hole locations!
  5. Yes, the day they came in was pretty special. We had 3 demo irons (3,7,PW) at the store for customers to try before pulling the trigger on a $2K+ set of blades. I made the mistake of puring everything on my first test drive. I was a legitimate 17 greens a round kind of ball striker back then and those wrenches possessed the sex appeal and cruelty of a supermodel. I could literally feel it in my loins when I flushed the deuce. When I missed, it was literally painful. And that's during a TX Summer, in the cold they would best be described as "cruel and unusual". Gamed for just over a year before boxing them up. Tired of the incessant pestering, I recently sold them to a buddy for a song. Still regret the sale but no chance would I game them regularly today.
  6. Mmmmm...vintage marketing materials. Equipment language was so much simpler then. A poignant reminder of the need for a site like MGS to wade through the obfuscating "new" B.S. tech modern manufacturers try to shove down our throats every year. I had a gig working the golf department at a sporting goods store in '98 that qualified me for a steep discount on a built 2-PW set of Tourney PMBs. I think after my discount they still cost me ~$1200.00 (in '98!!!). My boss at the time asked, "Why do you need a 2 iron?" My reply as I signed over several paychecks, "Because the PW is GW, just take all my dough and order the clubs."
  7. That kn1fe is gorgeous and pristine. Thank you for sharing. You should incorporate it into some sort of fixture for your desk or memorabilia shelf. You're spot on with that PW loft. Probably another one of the purist leaning components of the Macgregor biz model that delivered them to the dustbin. Manufacturers were jacking up lofts on game improvement sets in mid-90s but MacG refused to budge off old standards.
  8. That set easily makes my favorite forgings Top 10 list. Absolutely love those heads. I had a 2-PW set of Tourney PMBs that also make that list. I want to see a pic of that VIP kn1fe.
  9. I played the Tiburon tees last trip out there. Hit it great, only missed one fairway and carded a smooth 81. Even after a great drive the beefy par 4s still leave 3w-4i approaches, especially playing with a North wind. And like you said, if you're not consistently on the correct green segment, you can expect a 40+ putts kinda round. The only silver lining, made a really good birdie on 9 (the hole Kevin Na took 16 swats to complete).
  10. I refuse to play TPC San Antonio this time of year because the wind almost always blows opposite of how Norman designed it to play for the PGA Tour stop. They have audio of him previewing each hole on the GPS system and offering strategic advice that makes absolutely no sense with opposite wind. Trying to score on that track over the Winter is futile.
  11. They don't call it "Original" for nothing. My go to oat soda, unless I head down the hill to Gravity Brewing. In Texas it was "Yellowbelly, please ma'am", up here they call 'em "Colorado Khakis". And I currently have one occupying my Yeti Coldster. Like you, looking forward to a windy Bear Trap this afternoon.
  12. All really fun reads. Thanks for sharing. It's amazing how much Nicklaus won playing those Macgregor farm eggs. Really puts any bemoaning of modern equipment into perspective.
  13. When I was trying to absorb _the entire thread_ last night (was dreaming about Xstiffshafts' Scottys), the before/after of your gamer is the reason I selected this one from the collection as my first attempt. I assumed removing the current finish would be a giant PITA and while there are several spots pitting, the areas on the face and top relief are really shallow. I'd probably game it on really fast greens if the rust didn't put me off. The sole is the worst. But the head has zero dingers. There is also no chance I would ever sell my first refurb project. Considering all those things, my vision: Sole - sand, polish, maybe hammer? Face/Top-relief - Restore? Paintfill - all electric blue (maybe blank the sole) Can I get a two tone effect (polished grey sole/black face, etc)? Thanks for the advice guys.
  14. ☝️That is incredible. How can the 7i possibly be his favorite club with that embarrassing gap in his career ace record? What a slouch.
  15. Salty scoring for the rust season, Anderson!!! You must be seriously dangerous in mid-season form. I bet the birdies from off the green on #9 & 18# made that 68 extra special.
  16. Thinking about taking on this old Scotty for my first project. A lot of the black finish is intact with some pitting. I'm not at all concerned about maintaining the original finish. What direction would you take this head, Xstiff?
  17. Glimpsing a snapshot of your action on that ridiculous upslope it's obvious you can golf your ball from just about anywhere.
  18. Everybody that knows my albatross stats says I'm karmically precluded from ever bagging an ace. It's hard for me to disagree.
  19. I only played it once. Close to Spring Branch, right? Pretty sure it was some kind of USGA qualifier. I remember it being a really tough track.
  20. Definitely my weirdest birdie. It's a really tight 340ish par 4. Hit a decent 3 iron on my first tee ball, but it clipped the path and kicked straight right OB. So now I'm thinking hit the dog up there far as possible for a scrambling bogey. Cold rope one over the hill but we can't see the front of the green where the hole is located. Looked for it everywhere but the hole for 5 minutes, about to walk back to the tee when my teammate looks in the cup and says, "You were playing a Titleist 3 with blue ink right?" [emoji15]
  21. Dealing with that much upslope, I've learned it's easier to play for the yank than fight it. That mental adjustment has also probably saved me some chiropractic adjustments.
  22. When are we going to get our first ace? I've had 20+ quite literally hanging over the lip and (4) Par 5 double eagles over that past 10 years. Kind of like your situation, I made 3 on the par 4, 4th at the Bandit after hitting my 1st tee ball OB. Yep, that happened. I don't think I'll ever make one.
  23. Is it safe to say the turf is a little sloppy in your neck of the woods this time of year? It definitely is at my course. I used to exclusively play a steep, edge down, high spin short game. And when that was my only system I would have a lot of trouble with mushy turf. I have since learned to use the bounce more and get kinda shallow and splashy with a mushy lie for example. On the mental side, unless there is danger lurking long, I try to commit to a target 3 feet beyond the hole any time the lie is less than ideal. You're much more likely to accelerate through impact and make quality contact. If it comes out a little dead due to the suspect lie, you still end up close to the hole. Finally, you already said it, practice exclusively non-preferred lies and you will be amazed how fast your short game improves. Falling in love with my short game practice (no $$$ for green fees) over one Summer, took me from putt 'em out 75 to 70 and kept it there for 5 years with minimal maintenance.
  24. Affirmative on the potential for creativity. Seems like a great natural links design with at least some of it cut out of the trees. Looks really, really good to me.
