  1. @GolfSub70 Sub 70 Sycamore 004 Mallet Putter- Official MGS Forum Review by Dick Erdmann Introduction A little about me. I’m retired, almost 70 and no pro, but my grandkids do think I’m the cat’s meow on the course. I estimate that 95% of my play is on courses that average 5700-6000 yards. About 95% of my golfing occurs between April and mid- November. I would classify myself as a fair-weather golfer. Mid- Michigan is home and I play the vast majority on public access courses. I enjoy the sport as recreation and for emotional release. Currently my handicap index is 8. I have played golf since 10, learning from my dad, playing during summers as a junior and on my high school team. Spent 20 years in the Army and played occasionally. Once retired, I picked up the sport again and actually devoted time to practice. As I have aged and losing some flexibility my distance has dropped. I feel I’m playing the best golf of my life right now in part due to technological advances and becoming a more strategic golfer stressing accuracy and repeatability. My current putter is an Odessey Versa Works 7- 350g. (Shown below) This has been in my bag since 2016. It was a huge improvement over my past blade style putters from mixed match sets. Putting well has always alluded me in some respect. Reading greens consistently as well as repeatable swing has contributed to 3 putts on average, one to 2 times per round. My current basic putting stats for this season are shown below: My goal is to improve my putting overall. I’m not looking for huge differences. What I’m looking for is sustainable improvements. Reducing the 3 putts. I plan to concentrate on distances from 21 feet and in. I plan to test this putter on the course, but concentrate on the local practice green. My measurement tools are what everyone possesses. One pace for me equals 34 inches. It takes 7 paces and a foot to reach 21 feet for me. I settled on testing at 21 feet and less because I feel any putt longer is difficult to measure for an accurate and consistent lag, for me anyway. Why test this product? The DTC model is of interest, but I’m not 100% sold on it yet. I’m curious about their graphite/steel shaft. Sub 70’s 004 Mallet is heavier and being able to adjust head weight is of interest to see how it might impact my swing, if I can actually tell of any difference. Sub 70’s website ordering was efficient but with the custom choices available, average golfers need to have a decent understanding of what this all means. It’s hard to place an order without seeing or feeling the product. Again, this is me. Ultimately it comes down to how does it look, how does it feel, am I making more putts, can I afford it? All of these will decide if it goes in my bag. @golfsub70
  2. Have to admit, the 3W isn’t my “best friend” but I generally do OK with it and really need that gap filler. Welcome to the forum. Hope you enjoy. Welcome.

  4. I understand the need to know the distance to a target. I also see many people abuse that need to know, which does slow the game down. Some people take 3 or 4 readings, march and get a club, take another reading, I guess the flag must have jumped in the last minute. I use a Swami 6000 which gives me straight line distances. I like the front, middle back yardage aspect. I can't honestly say I'm accurate enough to warrant the use of a range finder. But I am decent enough to know I don't like to guess about distances. I hate doglegs because I have to guess how far I need to hit to clear the corner. Down side to the Swami.
  5. League play is over for the year. Since I turn a year older before next years league play I'm supposed to move up one set of tees. Decided to play from those tees yesterday to start looking at course strategies. There is about 200 total yard difference between my old tee and the new ones. Yes, there is an interesting angle vantage difference between the 2. I'll play them once or twice more before they close the course down next month. I need to plan my shots differently for sure. I did notice I only used my driver 3 times, 3 metal 4 times., 6 iron and 4 hybrid. Very different from this past year.
  6. I hear ya, I did the same years ago when DSG got rid of all their PGA folks from the golf dept. But...I've mellowed over time and they have done some good things locally so...I don't totally disregard them anymore.
  7. I hear ya TimT. Nothing wrong with mixed bags, especially since you're not being paid to carry them eh? Welcome to the Forum. I trust you'll find there is a wealth of knowledge you should be able to find and we hope you will share yours with us as well. Welcome fellow Big 10 er.
  8. Congratulations testers. Good luck on your upcoming venture. Sure do hope you guys don't get "wet"! Lookin forward to hearing about this product.
  9. Rainy and chilly today. Decided to hit some balls in the ole barn net. Usually start with 10 chips then move to 8 Iron and concentrate on consistent hits. Then finish with 10 shots using my 7 Iron. Did a half way decent job today. Roughly 80% were pretty decent.
  10. Usually I don't play on a Sunday afternoon. But weather was perfect in Mid MI. Sun, 72*, little breeze. Next 3 days are predicted rain, so I figured what the hay. Started out playing very well but ran into a major slow down at the 7th. Caught up to 2 groups of knuckleheads who were playing whack a mole. Behind them 2 groups waiting their turn to tee off. I just hate waiting around. Boogied the last 3 holes( 2 with stupid 3 putts). Just stupid head space and timing issues internal. Ended with a 40. Bright side was 5 of 7 fairways hit, 6 out of 9 greens hit. Hit the best 4 hybrid shot ever and it actually held the green. But the weather for early Sep was just perfect.
  11. Have not, zero, none in the past 10 years. Early on in my getting serious about practice' I looked at lots of "on-line" sites and email videos. Some helped a little, but I agree, lessons are the best. I find it hard to assimilate what I watch in videos to doing for real. I need to ask questions in the middle to fully understand what I should feel. Welcome to the forum. This a great place to ask and receive feedback. Sometimes very helpful other times maybe not so much. But what does not click with me...might for someone else.
  12. You rock dad! Also kudos to mom.
  13. Glad you were able to get on the links. So sorry to hear about your pup. Family is family. Something tells me Jacob had something to do with the 18th. Most will say I'm a sap but hey. I believe what I believe and I'll own it.
  14. Welcome to the forum folks. Great questions and a great place to get some good answers. I can't add any technical advice more that already mentioned. Welcome.
  15. Ditch the driver, problem solved. Sorry, couldn't resist. You could try the 4 wood? Just go to some demo days and try a couple of different combo's.
  16. I'm old fashioned. I still pound nails out the soles and use fencing wire for laces. Never wear out. Welcome to the forum. As you can see there are many great thoughts. Welcome, welcome and great question.
  17. Welcome to the forum JS. Hope you find it as useful as I have. Don't be afraid to ask questions. The only stupid one is probably the one I'll ask, so you should be good to go.
  18. Congrats to all the testers. Enjoy, do good work. Looking forward to your discovered results.
  19. For sure, Mid Michigan retiree casual set for all 3 seasons when courses are open. Shorts when above 60* jackets when under 45 and umbrellas when lightning is around.(Tin foil lined inside reflects it).
  20. Yeah me too. Farmer's tan arms and golfer's tan legs. If I wear the wrong socks you can see right away.
  21. Ping G400 Pitching wedge followed by Ping G400 Utility wedge 52*, then Ping Glide 2 56*. My sand wedge is an old Nike 54* with a nice thick bottom.
  22. Beautiful day today in mid MI. Low 70's, lots of sun and gentle breezes. We've had 3 days of no rain so things are starting to dry up. Only spotted 3 'casual water" spots. I missed them all. Shot 37 for my normal 9. Nice walk for sure. Only hit 4 GIR but 4 others were all within 2 feet or less so striking was doing OK. Went back to using the lines on my ball for putting. Putted much better today. Only 14. The 2 birdies I made helped for sure. Wanted practice with my 3 wood off the deck so put the driver away for this round. Still need to practice or keep practicing. Just not getting much height. Onward and upward ho.
  23. Try MG Golf.com. Decent hats at 9.99. Gloves for 7.99. Ball markers 8.00. Decent quality really.
  24. Welcome to the forum. This is "da" place to ask those questions. Most of the time you'll receive sincere info based on experience. You did get some of the "best of the best" responses thus far.
  25. Matt: Welcome to the forum. This is the place to ask for and receive info and tips. Hope you enjoy.
