There's a guy I met a couple of times who's doing just that. He's a golf course photographer and I think he wrote a couple articles for Golf Digest. After thoroughly reviewing the photo, it appears that the ground is very swampy. Additionally, there is a cup next to the shoe. Using my expert detective skills, I have come the conclusion that there is a person attached to the shoe who sunk underneath.
