  1. Mornin’, y'all! I'm not sure it is possible to get a better cup of coffee than the coffee in the waiting room at your local QuickLane while getting an oil change and tires rotated. Yum! I forgot to post this story yesterday. Tuesday was raining and cold so I decided to hit some balls on the simulator at my course before meeting some buddies for bowling. The night before I had cooked steak dinner for my wife and I, and the leftover steak was going to be my lunch (I bowl at 1:00 so I figured I munch on a sandwich while hitting balls at Noon). Because I was going right from the house to the course, I simply wrapped the sandwich in a paper towel and put it in the open side pouch of my Sunday bag (right above the plastic bag in photo below). Then, things went wrong. I left my golf bag inside by the garage door while I went outside for a minute or two. When I got back inside, the dog, Lil Miss Who-Me? (aka, Princess Butter-wouldn’t-melt-in-My-Mouth) had decided I didn’t need that sandwich more than she did. She had eaten one slice of bread, a slice of cheese and half the steak when I found her — perfectly positioned over the paper towel so as not to get any crumbs on the floor. She was not pleased to be interrupted but was perfectly okay with me having to settle for a plain cheese sandwich for lunch. Oh, and she was so sneaky that my wife, sitting less than 10’ away, had no idea what was going on. And I lost 75¢ bowling.
  2. I’m in the same boat — must have glasses, no contacts. Just saw eye doctor this morning and will be getting new prescription so the search is on for new clip-ons.
  3. Today’s medical adventure was just my annual eye exam. Small prescription change but I’m okay with that. Eye drops wearing off and thank goodness for the clouds! I have to play with my glasses so I need to decide what color clip on sunglasses to get. Currently have a dark amber but am wondering if another color might be better. Catching up here, then reading for a bit and bowling this afternoon (I love this perk of my course membership in cold and/or yucky weather). Second cup of coffee at hand but since I’ve finished off the morning belVita biscuits my faithful assistant has lost interest. Oh, well. Y'all have a great day!
  4. @tdroma98 I'll trade you my goodie bag for 25° and some sun! Hope your visit is as painless as mine was.
  5. He encourages me to spray the balls around specifically for the advertising angle. Tees are new — literally came into his office yesterday.
  6. When your morning starts with a trip to the dentist but then he reminds you that he's a golfer, too!
  7. Morning, everyone! Gonna be a slow day here -- quick trip to the dentist (filling repair), raining until tonight so some reading this morning and some bowling this afternoon. Maybe back on the course by Thursday. Remember, keep smiling!
  8. I’ve used Sharpies for quite a while to identify my ball and/or alignment. Not uncommon to have to re-mark after a couple of rounds (as long as ball hasn’t become damaged). I'm very interested to see if my mods to the Maxfli makes any difference.
  9. Simple: I would rather just be playing. If I have the time and the weather is good, I'll take 6-9 holes over a large bucket of balls. [Note: I also don't have access to a "short game practice area" or practice bunker.]
  10. These are the first variations. I'll probably try a couple of others after I see how these work.
  11. The most recent snowfall is rapidly disappearing so I hope to get back to the course on Monday or Tuesday to keep testing. As I mentioned in my intro post, I am a big fan of alignment aids like the TaylorMade Tour Response Stripe and Srixon Divide balls. I find the new alignment aid on the Maxfli Tour really helpful on the tee and for aligning putts. However, the feedback when hitting putts is not as strong to my eyes as the boldness of the design might indicate. So, I have made minor modifications to one sleeve of balls to see if there is any difference. Ball #1: a small red dot to the interior ends of the arrows. Ball #2: a thin red line down the center line of the arrows. Ball 3#: red fill in the outer margin lines of the arrows. I tried not to go overboard with the size of the markings. Will report back.
  12. Today’s simulator “discoveries”: (1) it doesn’t matter what ball you use — Titleist, TaylorMade, Srixon, Maxfli — if your driver launches at 19°+ and your backspin is in the neighborhood of 4800, the ball isn’t going very far; and, (2) the ball tracer on those shots sure is pretty to look at. Apparently, I’m only allowed one decent indoor session with driver before my phobia returns.
  13. My limited on course experience with them is “no” — at least no more so than other balls in the price range. Hoping today’s snow is short-lived so I can spend more time outdoors looking at durability and discoloring.
  14. 3-6” on the way today. “Best laid plans . . .” Looks like more March Madness than Hit it/Find it Madness for me this weekend. On the upside, my Jayhawks managed to survive a big time meltdown last night against a very good Samford squad. Hope all y'all's teams are doing well and will make it sweet by the Sunday night!
  15. Congrats @vandyland! Nicely played — the kind of round I can only dream about.
  16. Updated us to 4-6" tomorrow. The driver is the only club so far where the Maxfli was the highest spinning -- usually bottom two. Perplexing.
  17. Disclaimer #1: I understand the focus of the ball test using the Maxfli Tour with Max Align Technology is intended to be on the usefulness of the alignment aid. However, the advent of “Third Winter” in mid-Michigan sent me back into the simulator once more to try getting some data with my driver. Disclaimer #2: I have an absolute phobia about hitting driver indoors (at least in the set-up available to me) so I’m pretty damn pleased with myself for getting the data below. Disclaimer #3: I was already planning to get a driver “tune up” this Spring but today’s experience reinforced the need for getting some professional input. Enough preamble — on to the results. Club: Ping G425 driver (10.5°) with Alta CB 55 R graphite shaft (head and back weight set to standard/neutral). Balls: TaylorMade Tour Response, Titleist Tour Speed, Srixon Q-Star Tour, Maxfli Tour, and Wilson Triad. Simulator: Uneekor (I don't know the model). I hit each ball multiple times using the 1¾“ Birtee. After deleting obvious outliers (tops/skyballs), 5 shots were included in the data set. Below are some numbers from today's session. As with previous clubs (SW, PW, 8i, 18° Hy-Wood), the Maxfli Tour was top two in terms of ball speed and Apex, but lowest in launch angle. I neglected to take a photo of the dispersion patter but, trust me, it wasn’t terribly pretty — all me, not the balls. As in tests with previous clubs, I could find no discernible difference in sound/feel between the MaxFli Tour and the other balls — I would be comfortable playing any of them based just on this criterion. After hitting the same Maxfli Tour for the equivalent of about 27 holes the only noticeable wear/abrasion can be seen in the photos below. Over heard someone saying 3-5" of snow on Friday! Good thing I got the Maxfli Tour out for 81 holes during our "Spring of Deception" earlier this month.
  18. I would agree with @ScramblinMan — the only difference I can discern is the alignment aid. It is wider and close to 360° but, in my experience, not as obtrusive when looking down at the ball as still photos make it appear.
  19. No worries, @jbern. We knew it couldn’t last.
  20. This time of year I often go deep down the memory rabbit hole. I've been lucky enough to have visited Ireland a dozen times including 9 times with students over Spring Breaks in March. But I only had the chance to golf there during one of those trips (a 16-week stay in Dublin). I played a variety of courses -- Sutton Golf Club, a delightful 9-holer on a little spit of land jutting in to the Irish Sea; Deer Park, a busy public course in Howth reached by taking my clubs with me on two buses, a commuter train, and hitch-hiking a 2-mile uphill road; a couple of courses I stumbled upon while driving from Dublin to the west coast and back. My favorite Irish golf memory is getting to play the Old Course at Ballybunion. This was my introduction to links golf. Later during that same 16-week span I had the opportunity to play at St. Andrews (Old Course and Jubilee) and Carnoustie but Ballybunion remains top of the list for me. Remembering the views, the size of the dunes, the locals walking their dogs and kids down to the ocean, the perfection and challenge of the course -- all bring a sense of sheer joy at having been there. Unfortunately, those memories are as close to a golf course as I'll be getting for the next 7 days at least. We've had our "Spring of Deception" (aka "Fake Spring") and are entering "Third Winter" here in mid-Michigan -- snow pellets yesterday, 36° + 15mph winds today, potentially measurable snow by Friday. Had my waffles and orange juice so now on to the coffee and belVita biscuits (and cuddles with the dog and then the Honey-do list). Have a great day, everyone!
  21. Weather seems to be a recurring theme: it tried to snow here in mid-Michigan today — little snow pellets but no accumulation. That said, it may be a full week before we can get back on the course due to cold and rain. I guess hot-chocolate-with-Fluff-marshmallow season isn’t quite over.
  22. I had expected to see the same result (less spin with Tour Response) so was very surprised. Maxfli Tour has had the most similar numbers to Tour Speed for me.
  23. Wondering if it has launch/spin characteristics of Callaway Supersoft which I will often play in cold, out-of-season rounds. The TaylorMade site doesn't give compression, and MGS Ball Lab has Callaway at 47 and Maxfli S at 82.
  24. Is this new TaylorMade ball aimed at the Callaway Supersoft? Anybody tried it?
  25. The Tour Response has many similar characteristics but does spin a bit more than Tour Speed. The Maxfli Tour and Wilson Triad might also be worth a look, especially if price is a consideration.
