  1. I have thoroughly enjoyed this testing so far. I will say that I didn't really want to like these irons since I'm a Callaway homer, but these things are legit. I may have to make some bag changes when this thing is over.
  2. My Stage 1 is up! https://forum.mygolfspy.com/topic/24438-official-forum-member-review-cleveland-launcher-hbcbx-irons/?p=434116 Now on to the fun part
  3. First off, I would like to thank MyGolfSpy and Cleveland Golf for this opportunity to test the CBX irons. Ever since I was selected for this, I've been waiting patiently for them to get here so I can get them to the course and see how they do. I will say that as soon as I made it to the course and went to the driving range, they caught several people's eyes and I started getting questions about them almost immediately. A Little About Me So let's get started with a little about me and how I got started in this crazy game. I'm from Louisiana so we get to play almost year round, although I get cold easily so I don't really like to play when it gets below 50. I picked the game up when I was 19. I was about to start college and several friends of mine talked me into going out with them to play at the local golf course. Most of us ended up scheduling our classes around our golf. We played 3-4 days a week and had no idea what we were doing. After college, I started really trying to learn the mechanics of the swing and started playing a lot of tournaments. I took lessons from several different pros and really started fine tuning my game. I got my handicap down to about a 2 and then decided I would try to chase being a teaching professional myself. I was hired on by another course around here to manage the course and give lessons, but it didn't take me long to realize that (1) this wasn't going to pay the bills and (2) I didn't get to play anywhere near as much as I used to. I stayed there about a year and then had to go back and get a real job when the money started getting a little tight. Now I'm back to playing a couple times a week and my current handicap is somewhere around a 5-6 if I were to guess. I don't have an actual USGA handicap at the moment, but I'm about to sign back up and start keeping track of that again. My Game Here is my current setup: Driver: Callaway Epic SubZero with Aldila Rogue Max 75 stiff shaft 3 Wood: Callaway Rogue SubZero with Project X Evenflow 6.0 Stiff 75g shaft 3 Hybrid: Callaway Rogue with Aldila Synergy 60 HYB stiff shaft Irons: Callaway Apex (4-PW) with True Temper XP 95 stiff shafts Wedges: Callaway MD3 wedges (50, 54, 58) Putter: SeeMore Original FGP Balls: Bridgestone Tour B RX As you can see, I'm a slight fan of Callaway equipment. I typically play a slight draw, but sometime that can get out of hand and turn into a 30-yard hook. So my normal miss is to the left with my irons. As far as distances go, my PW maxes at 150, I'll play 7-iron anywhere from 175-185 and 4-iron anywhere from 210-220 with the rest of them mixed in somewhere. I will say that I didn't start hitting my irons that far until I go those Apex irons. Before that, my 7-iron maxed out at 165-170. When I tested my current set of irons, I loved the way the feel off the face and I also loved the extra distance I got out of them. I have kind of a mid-level ball flight, but also play a choke down shot that I play a lot lower. My wedge game is probably my strongest aspect while my weakest is probably my driver, but if it's on, it'll be a really good day. CBX Launcher On first sight, I really liked the way these irons looked. I did notice the top line wasn't quite as thin as I would like it and they also felt a little heavy, but I wasn't sure about that until I compared them with my current set and there was noticeably more weight with the Clevelands. Other than those two things, I really liked them. I have been really intrigued by the technology that comes on these irons and really want to see if they do what Cleveland says they'll do. The 4 key aspects of these irons are the Tour Zip grooves, cup-face technology, v-sole technology, and the feel-balance technology. These are supposed to give more forgiveness as well as add distance and spin. I'll be honest and say that I've never really given Cleveland much thought when it came to picking out a set of irons. I've used their wedges before, but that's about it. I've hit a set of their old irons (don't remember which ones) but I was already set on Callaway so they didn't get a fair chance. I got these set up with the same shafts I have in my current Callaway irons. I've been fitted for my last two iron sets and was told to get standard everything and these were no different, so they are standard length/lie. I wanted to test the CBX irons as opposed to the HB irons simply because that's the line that was similar to what I've always played. Callaway Apex Comparison As I said earlier, I'm a huge Callaway fan and also absolutely love the irons I'm hitting now, so it's going to be challenging for these to out-perform my current set, but I'm going to give them a fair shot. When I first put them side by side with my Callaway irons, the first thing I noticed was the larger top line I mentioned earlier. It's definitely not a positive in my opinion, but it also will not turn me away from them either. The one thing I really hope to get out of these is a little more consistency than what I have now. When I compared the lofts to what I currently have, the Cleveland irons are actually one degree stronger than my current set, so I don't expect to lose any distance, but may gain a little. I'm really not looking to add more distance, but if it does, that will be fine. Overall, the only way they replace my current set is if they give me the same outcome as my Callaway irons with a little more consistency and accuracy. If they can do that, I'll gladly take the Callaways out of the bag.
  4. Played in a two man scramble Saturday morning. Didn't play my best, but it was enough to pull out second place. For some reason lately, I seem to be losing my driver off to the right which is causing me to not have very many good shots into the greens. I've got another tournament this afternoon, so hopefully I can find it before that one starts.
  5. I'm not sure what happened to me this weekend, but I just couldn't get anything going. Actually, the chipping was the best part of my game and that's usually the worst. I missed way too many fairways which caused me to miss a lot of greens. On the greens I did hit in regulation, I missed just about every birdie putt except one. I think I ended up around 85-86 and about $20 less than what I started with.
  6. Got a chance to play twice over the long weekend. Played the first round at a really difficult course about an hour from here, and it beat me up pretty good. I couldn't figure out my driver on the front nine and that will put you in trouble there. Got it straightened up a bit on the back, so that was a little better, but it was still a rough round altogether. Then played again yesterday at my normal course and shot a 77 after bogeying the first 3 holes, so that was a bit of a confidence booster after the first round.
  7. Well, the tournament is over, and while I played well for the most part, it wasn't quite well enough. On the first day, I shot a 37 on the front nine, but staggered a little coming in and ended with a 77, which was still the leader in my flight. So all I had to do was hang on. Second day, I opened with an even par 36. I think I started counting my chickens before they hatched, because on the next two holes, I went bogey, triple bogey. I recovered a little, only to drop another double bogey on hole 15. Had a 4 foot putt that I lipped out on 18 that would have put me in a 3-way tie for 2nd, but I ended up in 4th place. That's the best I've done in that tournament in a while, but hopefully next year, I can get in the money.
  8. Played a couple of practice rounds yesterday and today to get ready for a tournament that starts tomorrow. Yesterday I had a 79 with an 8 on a par 5. I played pretty well other than that one hole. Today, on the front nine, I had a 7 on that same hole, but followed it up with 3 straight birdies. About to start the back nine now. Maybe they'll let me skip that hole for the tournament Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy
  9. These things have been awesome since I put them in the bag. I feel really confident every time I hit both of them. Both feel solid and fly far. I hit the 3 wood yesterday on short par 4 that played 250 (afternoon scramble and we were playing from the ladies tees) and I landed it on the back of the green and it hopped over. I'll definitely need to watch my distances on them as compared to my old X-Hot, but I'm loving this thing so far.
  10. Played a little scramble last night. I was hitting my woods and irons great, but something happened to my short game. Just felt all kinds of uncomfortable with that part of my game. I've got a big tournament coming up this weekend that I'm leaving for in the morning. I sure hope it finds its way back into my game before that starts. I should have time for 2-3 practice rounds before the tournament begins to work on it, though.
  11. I recently got rid of several pair, but as of now, I have I think 5-6 pairs of Footjoys and 2-3 pairs of Adidas. I want to try the Spieth shoes, but I'm going to have to hold off for a little bit. I like to have a pair of shoes to match whatever I may be wearing at the time.
  12. Played a little 9 hole scramble last night. I got on the range before we started and quickly wanted to turn back around and go back home. I couldn't make solid contact with any club. I finally gave up on the range and just went and played and it was completely different on the course. I hit every club solid just about. We still didn't win, but I left feeling a lot better about my game than I did when I got off the range.
  13. Played Saturday morning and by the time the 5th or 6th hole came, I was ready to go home. I just couldn't get a solid strike on the ball with just about any club. I finally started hitting better on the back nine, but by that time, I just didn't really care any more. I still won $5, but that's only because the guys I was playing with played even crappier than I did. Planning on getting back out tomorrow and again Saturday morning, so hopefully it'll come around by then.
  14. It's not adjustable but I like the ball flight I get with it. I hit it higher than most of my clubs, but that's the way I like it.
  15. Went off and bought the Rogue 3 Hybrid yesterday to take the place of my X-Hot 5 wood. I hit it several times on the range before I bought it and it was solid. Should be getting the rogue Sub-Zero 3 wood tomorrow. My bag is coming into shape now, hopefully my game will follow suit.
  16. Now that I think of it, the course I use to manage has some nice 5x5 mats that I bought when I was there about 3-4 years ago. The last time I saw them they were in really good shape, but they didn't use them this past winter. I wonder what they are planning on doing with those. I may try to pick one or two up this afternoon.
  17. I'd be all over that. I'd cut it in 3 sections and have 3 different areas to hit from in the yard all going to flags at a different distance.
  18. Played in a 4-man scramble this past Saturday. Temperature was 40 with about a 10 mph wind, so the wind chill was about 35 the whole time we were playing. It was absolutely miserable, but we got 2nd place. I couldn't feel my hands after about the second hole. I guess we had a little bit of fun, but it's not something I plan on doing again. I usually wait until it's at least 50 outside before I get to the course, which most of the time it is here.
  19. Played a little nine hole scramble last night. We got tied for first, but lost the playoff. I really like how I'm hitting the ball right now though. It's been a long time since I've felt this comfortable over almost every shot. Still have a few things to work on with chipping, but other than that, I'm playing really well.
  20. Played yesterday and hit the ball really well. I just couldn't make a putt to save my life. I did hit my irons better than I have in a really long time. I pretty much hit them exactly how I wanted all day. Overall, the quality of golf I've been playing is pretty promising with the few tournaments I've got coming up in the near future.
  21. I've had this happen before as well. Usually if I hit 3-4 shanks in a row on the range, I'm done. I'll get too frustrated at myself if I let it go too much past that. I'll just wait and go back whenever I can and usually they are gone.
  22. Mine is definitely me on the day of our gender reveal for our first child. One of the best days of my life since I got what I was wanting. I've got several nephews, but we don't have any girls on my side of the family until now. I started to regret the decision to want a girl when my mom and my wife's mom started buying clothes and got carried away with it, though, lol.
  23. I played for the first time since we had our baby Saturday morning. I hit the ball fairly well, and my irons were better than that had been before, but my chipping has gone to crap. I was still able to roll in an eagle and 5 birdies over 27 holes to make about $40 from the group I was playing with, so I won't complain about the chipping too much.
  24. I've been eyeing a motorized push cart for years, but never pulled the trigger on one. Sun Mountain was about to release one several years ago, but then they took it off their site and I never heard anything else about it. I'm also interested in these if you hear any reviews on them.
