  1. Used to watch both but then found GolfVlogsUK, the Average Golfer, TXG, Golf Sidekick and Mike Newton. That's a good blend of tech, comedy, course vlog, course management and club testing. Matt from Golf Sidekick has probably helped my game more than anyone by helping me think my way around the course better. He's also entertaining and right to the point, no fluff.
  2. I'm seriously thinking about getting a set of those Wilson Staff blades when they release in left handed later in the year. I saw a review from Mike Newton a couple of months ago and he raved about them. I still practice with my Dad's old Staff Fluid Feel blades from the 80's and hit them well down to about the 5 iron. I use hybrids below 6 in my regular set already because I hit them much higher and softer with my 95 mph driver SS. I'm thinking to game a 6-PW set and play some blades while I still can.
  3. I thought the coverage was very good on Fox but I did miss Jim Nance and Amanda Balionis with her positivity. I like Nick Faldo too but wish he was a bit more salty ala Johnny Miller.
  4. I watched Bubba warm up at the Canadian Open a couple of weeks ago. He was hitting to a green maybe 175 away. 4 shots, one after the other, high fade, high draw, low fade, low draw and all hit the green. Fade or draw probably isn't the right word because each ball moved laterally at least 25 yards. It was incredible. He never hit the same shot twice in a row.
  5. I'm thinking about getting custom fitted for the first time but keep delaying for a couple of reasons. I keep discovering things about my swing and making small changes here and there and worry it'll affect my club preferences down the road. The other reason is I hit my current 2 sets of clubs well, very straight and the expected distances for my swing speed, and wonder if fitted clubs will make any difference at all to my game. My Adams A12OS clubs I bought new off the rack and picked up a set of Wilson Di-7's used last winter that I regripped. They are in great shape and fly lower and a bit longer than my A12's. I need to get out and hit some different clubs and see how they feel. Demo days are non-existant around here in Windsor Ontario. I might have to hop across the border and see what I can find.
  6. I have some shafts lying around that I'd like to attach some clubheads too this winter. Hopefully they are available in lef....
  7. I weighed 240 at one time in my early 40's. Now I'm 57 and weigh 175. I've learned a lot in that time, way too much to write here. My best piece of advice for anyone looking to lose weight is to learn to count your calories. I've used MyFitnessPal in the past and it works. It's a constant reminder of how much you are eating and keeps you on your toes. You can't lose weight unless calories in So buy a kitchen scale and get to measuring when you eat or cook. Record your recipes for later repeated use. Learn how to use the app and track down your favourite foods. It's very simple and gets easier as time goes by. Good luck!!
  8. I practice once or twice a week and play once a week most of the season, but a few times a year manage to squeeze in a few extra rounds on a small golf trip or vacation. I'm still in the process of rebuilding my swing so I tend to run through my bag to ensure any changes I've made are working with all the clubs. Not every club but typically Driver, fairway wood off the turf, 1 hybrid, 1 mid-iron, 1 short iron and then my 56 for different shots from 30-85 yards. Lots of chipping and putting but we don't have a really good practice facility in one spot in this area to get in a variety of shots to a variety of green conditions. One course has a good sized practice green but no flat spots on it at all so you are either putting up, down or sidehill and the green is elevated for the most part. On another course that has a range it's a good sized green but either dead flat or with a hump in the middle, something you never actually see on course here. Finding a bunker to practice out of that launches onto a green is nigh on impossible.
  9. The biggest weakness of the fitting process is that I don't hit clubs off a carpet when I play golf. Club to turf interaction and feel is a big part of your success in ball striking and hitting off a carpet doesn't feel remotely close to taking a divot. A thorough fairway club fitting IMO would involve having a club or two built to your specs that you can take to the range or the course to hit so you can see actual ball flight and feel and see how the club works for you in real world conditions. Launch monitors have their place as a starting point but relying on them completely for your fitting process leaves some huge variables in play.
  10. Late last season I decided to completely reinvent my swing and my game. I'm not getting any younger and I figured I'd gone as far as I could go (10ish HDCP) with my homemade swing. So I watched a ton of video, went out west and hit about 1500 balls in two weeks in the dome in Calgary, a few hundred more back home here in Windsor and was ready to take on the world. I headed out to one of the best conditioned courses in the area after work on Monday. Sunny and just warm enough for shorts but a little on the breezy side with little shelter from the wind on a mostly links style layout. I hit the ball really, really well. Shots that would normally intimidate me I actually pulled off. It took me about 13 holes to realize I could actually start playing some of the shots I practiced all winter. I stepped up to the 4th (played the back first) tee after trying to hit high draws all round and was faced with a large tree bascially in the middle of the fairway and no way around it with a draw and too high to go over. I said to myself, "wait a minute, you know how to hit a controlled fade now", and a lightbulb went on. I aimed for the right edge of the fairway and just like clockwork, put a baby fade out there, which the wind carried back to the middle of the fairway. Lightbulb now fully one, I went to the next tee, and the flag was left centre on a par 3. I was so enamoured with my little fade I started the ball out about 10 feet right of the green and faded it back to the left of the flag about 10 feet away. Hole 9 same thing. Hit a little fade out to the left centre and a wedge in. I've never been so excited after a round to be honest. The first 12 holes or so I still had my old mindset, playing away from trouble at all costs because I didn't have the confidence to pull off the ideal shot or the confidence to recover if I mishit it. I got a ton of bad breaks on the front, 4 or 5 shots that if they were a foot this way or that would have been brilliant. Still ended up ok but playing from more difficult lies or from farther back than I wanted. I had the draw mindset off the tee even when a fade was the best shot. I shot an 82 which I've never done at the beginning of the season, usually mid to high 80's with a handful of bad shots. I can't wait to get back out this weekend and shape some more shots! I'm absolutely brimming with confidence and running entire rounds through my head for all the courses I usually play!
  11. A 4 wood or 16-17 degree 3 wood. I haven't hit a 3 wood off the deck in forever but will venture a 5 wood if there isn't too much trouble around the green. I'm thinking a 4 wood might be able to split the difference and be hittable off the deck and the tee. I think I'll look around for something used to experiment with before I take the plunge on something new.
  12. I'm 56 and you have to twist my arm to ride in a cart. I'll only do it if I'm playing with buddies that absolutely have to ride in a cart. Golf is a walking sport for me and the walk leaves time for conversation and careful consideration of your next shot. When I'm in a cart, even if the round takes the same amount of time because the course is crowded, it always feels like I'm rushing and I don't enjoy that feeling on a golf course.
