How long have you been playing golf? First time was in high school, I got more into it in my 20's so about 15ish years. What’s your handicap or normal score? I'm normally a mid 80's guy, my best round was 78, and my worst round was high enough to stop counting lol What do you love about golf? The ball never lies! You hit it true or you don't, it's pretty much that simple. I also really love just being outside and challenging myself to do/be better. What brings you to MyGolfSpy? Do you already know any other Spies? My wife tells me that I have a bit of an addictive personality, so when I get into something I tend to obsess. Golf has been one of my obsessions over the years and I found that reading MyGolfSpy is a great avenue for me to channel my obsession by learning from others to improve my game. Also it has helped me better choose my equipment for me instead of jumping at every trend because it's the cool new thing. Where are you from? What is your home course? I live in Hidden Valley CA just off of the course that runs through my neighborhood. I am happy to play anywhere though! What are the best and worst things about golf in your region? I love that there is no shortage of golf courses and green grass. I have lived in other states where you can be in the middle and still wind up on a dirt patch which is pretty frustrating. With all the green grass we do have to deal with the rain, so there is always two sides to a coin. What do you do for a living? I'm a former firefighter, and now I am an estimator for an electrical contractor.  How’d you pick your user name? It is the first half of my first name and last half of my last name...

When I shot my best round ever, I really just remember my score and a few highlights. Things were just going right for me that day, and even when I would hit a bad shot I ended up fine. I remember trying to cut a corner, but I hit tree branch that stuck way out. When the ball hit the branch it shot way up into the air and ended up right in the middle of the fairway. It was like I was living in opposite land, because on my normal rounds if I hit a tree I'm lucky to find it and when I do it's in garbage or unplayable... lol

Nope! Mine hasn't come out of the bag in a long time. I have a 3 wood and 5 wood with the same shaft both G30, and for some reason I am able to hit the 5 wood off the tee or the deck with confidence, and then very consistently shank the 3... Drives me nuts, but for some reason I keep carrying the dumb thing around with me lol

First let me thank you for sharing your story, and congratulations on your putting!!! Reading your story hit home with me because I have been known to 3 putt a time or 50, but also because I played in a scramble on Saturday with a guy who told me that he had got his new irons about a month ago and was "still getting used to them". He told me about his buying experience and that he tried several different sets during his fitting, but ultimately and went with the Taylor made p790's. Here is the fun part... He chose the 790's because "they looked the best to me, and if they look good, I will play good. After all, golf is a mental game right?" He then went on to explain that as he hit the different irons during his fitting, he hit multiple other sets better than the 790, but could not get over the fact that he liked the way the 790's looked, so he bought them. (Along with a fancy new huge Taylor Made cart bag because who can get a new set of Taylor made irons and put them in your old golf bag???) The whole conversation totally blew my mind, so I was pleasantly surprised to open up MGS and read that over here there are people who put a little more thought into what goes into their bag. I was just dumb founded the rest of the round as I watched him chunk shot after shot, and then hear him explain that he is "just having a bad day, and normally doesn't play like this." So again thank you for sharing and having the brains to go with what works for you and not what you think is the sexier club! Ok rant over...

Welcome, I used to live in NM as well. I played Santa Ana a bunch, but Twin Warriors was my favorite in that area. There are a bunch of good place to play there for sure!

The fact that the projected cut line is +6 is blowing my mind, and at the moment there are only 3 players under par. I mean Rory shot an 80, which means I would most likely be somewhere north of 120. Ouch!

I was working hard to have a score that started with a 7, and at the time the best round I had ever shot was an 81. It seemed like every round I would play I'd walk away saying if I would've done this or that I could've had it. But growing up in a house where dad's favorite saying was "if ifs and buts were candy and nuts every day would be Christmas" I tried my best to suck it up and keep plugging along until I reached my goal. I was playing really well (for me) and thought that it was finally my big day. Things were going great and even my bad shots seemed to not turn out to be too bad. I was on the par 5 17th and 18 was a par 4 to close the round. I ended the round with a Double-7 followed by a Bogie-5 for a score of 80... I went from limiting my mistakes for 16 holes, to hitting a bad shot on 17, and then following that up by hitting more bad shots to try to "make up" for the first one. It was brutal, I walked away with the best score I had ever had, and at the same time felt like I got kicked in the gut. It took me a while to realize how much truth there is in the old "the next shot is the most important shot". On the bright side I did end up finally breaking 80, and now I am on to new golf goals!

I'm guessing they will tell their kids that they walked to school, up hill both ways, in the snow...

The amount of ball marks I need to fix is normally a direct correlation to the round I am having, so fixing ball marks is normally a sign that things are going well for me. My general rule is to find my mark and then fix one or two extras. I don't go hunting all over the green for them, but I do try to make an effort to find a couple. I was taught that if you want nice things, you have to take care of the things you have. It is a bummer that people don't seem to take any ownership at all, or think of the golf course as something that is "ours" instead they just expect others to clean up after them. To me it is just lazy to leave a mess for someone else to clean up, its like leaving trash behind. When I get done with my round I also take a quick moment and throw away my trash before I return my cart, because if I don't then it falls on someone else to do it.

Spent the day at Meadow Club yesterday. Course looked great and was full of wildlife. Deer and turkey all over the place.

I believe the second place group was 111, and then a few in the teens, followed by a bunch in the 120' and 130's. They got trophies and then some gift cards, but I don't remember how much was on each card. They raffled away some pretty sweet prizes (autographed warriors jersey, ping g400 driver etc) so I would imagine the gift cards were for a pretty good amount.

That sounds like a great format! I will have to get some friends together and do a little mini scramble with the 3, 4, 5 rules.

I totally get that there are shady things that happen, but the whole idea of that just kinda cracks up me up. The fact that people feel the need to lie to make themselves look better during a "fun" round of golf. I'm a pretty competitive person, but I apparently have nothing on some guys out there.

I played in a tournament yesterday. It was a "shamble" format, so you play the best tee shot of the group and everyone plays out from there, and the top two scores are recorded. This was a work tournament and I played with 3 guys from my office who all were in the 30-40 handicap range (and for 1 guy that was pretty generous) but I was actually pretty happy with how I played. I hit some shots that were not great, but overall I played pretty well. When my group finished up we headed into the dinner area and turned in our scorecard, as expected we were nowhere near the top of the leader board. In fact we were near the bottom, which again didn't surprise me. What surprised me was that the leader at the time, and eventual winning team shot a 102. Now I know there were some good golfers out there based on guys I saw on the range, but I was pretty blown away that two guys from one team would've had to eagle 3 holes and birdie the other 15 holes to get that score. There could've been more eagles and perhaps a par mixed in, but that's how the score worked out. When playing best ball I wouldn't be blown away by a team scoring a 51, I've seen that done, but this blew me away. Now I'm not saying that these guys lied on their score card, if anything I'm a little upset I wasn't near their group to watch some really good golfers play. They must've been playing some pretty amazing golf! I am, however, curious as to how honest in general you think people are you when playing in a "fun" tournament? We put up a crappy score as a team, but we owned it and counted every stroke and can say that we turned in an honest score. So at the end of the day I was happy that I was out out of the office golfing on the company dime, and even got free food and drinks out of the deal as well. Can't beat that right???
