I played with Anthony Kim when he was living in Traverse City for a summer with his coach at the time (Adam Schriber).  He had just finished either his sophomore or junior year at Oklahoma.  Weird situation - totally estranged from his family and sleeping on his coach's couch (Adam is an interesting character in his own right).  Had developed a reputation locally in just a month of being mercurial and half-crazy.

I had no idea with whom I was playing when I arrived at the course, just that my pro (a good friend of Adam's) and I were going to be paired with two of Adam's best players.  As I was warming up on the range, I heard a thud behind me unlike any other in golf (and I have had the opportunity to play with plenty of D1 players, many of whom played on the PGA tour).  I stopped hitting balls and just watched - had never seen someone control a ball like that. Turns out to be Anthony Kim.

We were playing on my favorite course on which I had done some of the preliminary scouting for the architect (Tom Doak).  It was a remarkable 18, links style front 9 and Northern Michigan wooded on the back.  It was a fantastic test of golf and to score low you had to be able to move the ball left and right as well as vary trajectories.  I played to a 2 at that time and the best I had scored there was a 76.

First hole, knowing that I had course knowledge, Kim approaches me and asks for some guidance off the tee.  I point to a tree in the distance and tell him 260-270 yards on that line is perfect.  I expected him to pull driver or maybe 3 wood but instead he grabs his 4 iron.  Ball explodes off the face at stinger height on the exact line I had described.  Hit the darned thing 260 almost on the number.  Honestly was like that the whole day and he shot either 64 or 65 and left a few out there.  He apparently shot 61 and 62 there within a few weeks of my round with him.  I never saw Tiger in person in his prime but I will say that Anthony Kim was the best ballstriker I ever witnessed first hand.

Man...I need more AK stories injected straight into my veins! That's so awesome. Thanks for sharing.

  2. The irons I've been playing for the past couple years I found at the local golf store. They're 10+ years old but I got a set of 3-SW for like $125. I actually really like them. This should've been prefaced by saying that my game in no way justifies spending new club money. But there's golfers all over that buy new stuff often and get rid of perfectly fine 1-2 year old gear.

    1. How long have you been playing golf? What’s your handicap or normal score?
I started playing when I was 7 or 8, my stepdad lived next to our local 9 holer and my brother and I would sneak on with my moms clubs and play a little. Stopped in high school to play other sports. Started again in my early 20s at a little goat ranch course in Crossroads, TX. Got my clubs stolen a couple years later so I stopped again. Picked up some WalMart clubs and started playing again about 4 years ago and got really, really hooked. I'm in for good now. My handicap....is a lot. I don't have an official USGA handicap but I've made a spreadsheet that will calculate it and currently it says I'm a 35.6. I usually shoot around 110-120.

    2. What do you love about golf?
I love the fact that the game is unbeatable. Its something that I can play/practice for the rest of my life and never absolutely beat it or get it perfect. I like that it's outside (unless its midday summer in TX). And I really love the self policing/honor code of the game along with its history.

    3. What brings you to MyGolfSpy? Do you already know any other Spies?
I was brought here from golf twitter. I don't know that I know any other spies.

    4. Where are you from? What is your home course?
I'm from the middle of nowhere Wisconsin but I'm living around College Station, TX now. I don't have a "Home" course, but I prefer to whack it around the local muni here.

    5. What are the best and worst things about golf in your region?
Best - It's everywhere. There are 5 courses in town (2 private) and within a 1.5 hour drive I've got Austin and Houston and eveything in between.
Worst - Probably the price. I'm trying to get out from under student loans and it doesn't leave a lot of leftover to go spend 50-100 for a round. Update 7/2/19: Last Friday my wife and I found out that the above mentioned muni has a $9 walking rate on weekdays. NINE DOLLARS!!! I actually laughed out loud when the kid behind the register told me the price. Looks like the game is about to pick up hard and fast after all.

    6. What do you do for a living?
      I'm a civil engineering E.I.T.

    7. How’d you pick your user name?
My shot shape! Although, my friend (he's a scratch player) and I made a couple small tweaks at the range and got me to hit straight shots with every club in the bag so hopefully the name will be a laughable memory soon.

  3. Congrats to the winners! I figured Rory "The Boy From Bratislava" Sabbatini wasn't quite going to be enough to carry me when Glover and ZB got bounced. But this is by far the highest I've placed in one of these and they have quickly become my favorite major pool. See you in Portrush!
