This is sounding like an epidemic within the world of club fitting - umm, sorry, bad choice of words. Recently @Rickpwas fitted and a similar change from his long time data was made.  My fitter used the GC Quad system, which uses 3D graphic analysis of club head data at impact, and a lie board.  I was fitted twice at his facility and also using a lie board at a PING demo that same year.  All three came up with 2 degree upright.  What's with all these "fitting awakenings"? 🤔  Was I just fortunate in 1987 when fitted for my PE2's; green dot, +1/2".... or still awaiting to be woke? 🙂

The fact that your swing hasn’t changed since 1987 is really quite impressive. 🙂

I think most of these different fitting results come from swing changes, either intentional or unintentional. Swing dynamics change when you gain/lose flexibility, recover from an injury/surgery, gain/lose strength, make an intentional swing change, etc. All of these factors can influence one’s swing and therefore change fitting results greatly.

Good stuff GB! I’m surprised that the majority of us have been fit into the tour length driver. I’ve been playing. 44.5 since I got my G30 years ago. Seems like the secret is out so now we’re all going to be peppering the fairway during this competition.

Sounds like you had an awesome fit. Now the longest wait begins. emoji51.png

It’s fascinating that it works for people of all heights too. I’m 6’2” with slightly longer arms, but I just felt way more comfortable in shorter clubs. I was getting much more consistent strikes with the Tour Length and wasn’t losing any distance. One interesting note is, at the regular length, my 3W swing speed and driver swing speed was exactly the same. Once we cut down the driver, my swing speed actually went up a bit. The long shaft felt so unstable that I couldn’t even make a “full” swing.

@GB13 it will be very interesting to see how you go with the hybrid. I never used to be able to play a hybrid, they were just a left to right machine for me (a hook, remember I'm a lefty).

But right from the first shot the F9 3 hybrid I got has been amazing, I can hit any shape I need with it and it has become my favorite club in the bag.

That’s great!! I’m really hoping that’s how it turns out for me. Hybrids in the past have been very hooky for me too. It’s going to very much be a boom or bust club, but I went with the hybrid only because I knew, IF I can get it working right, it’ll be the most versatile club in my bag.

Another excellent gif choice... but that movie came out in 1997. I highly doubt GB has a clue what that is from. emoji15.png

You’d be correct in that assessment. To be fair though, I probably wouldn’t know a lot about movies that came out when I was alive...

Get that stock apology letter ready for the entire competition @GB13. You'll need it to explain your losses.

I can send you the copy of mine I had to use all last season. #cabooselife

Nah, this will be the only apology I’ll have to issue for the entire competition.

Man, tough call picking a horse for this race.  I know I said the deepest backswing was my choice, fully expecting no one (and I mean no one) was going to come close to @GB13.  Then @B.Bostonposts a swing that equals, perhaps eek's out the kid, followed by @edingc who looks to have dislocated a shoulder 😱. But then we have @daviddvm, the man on an island, who has the cojones to jump into the OL option... that's worth some extra points IMO  👏

Unless @Headhammerfollows up with a Linda Blair impersonation, I'm down to Cody or David.

Considering your reference went right over my head, I probably don’t want you on my team anyway.

I had the wonderful opportunity this afternoon to get fit for this challenge at Leading Edge Golf in Okemos, Michigan. I've stuck a few pictures below and will create a gallery later with a few more. I had an awesome time!

Josh, my fitter, spent several years fitting for PGA Tour players and is a member of an advisory board for Cobra, so I felt really comfortable from the get-go today, which made the nearly 90 minute drive for me worth it! (Another cool fact - he fits many of the local "celebrities," including several members of the Detroit Red Wings and various college coaches from many of Michigan's universities.) I really appreciated Josh was willing to talk numbers with me, as I am analytical by nature and also enjoy the various technologies employed by the heads, shafts, etc. Would I be a Spy if I didn't?!?

We started with the SpeedZone irons, and without giving too much away, they are very easy to look at and launch. Loft-jacking aside, I saw some crazy ball speed numbers with good spin and descent angles, and I wasn't even swinging my best. I cycled through all of the shafts Cobra offers in the SpeedZones, but none topped the KBS C-Taper Lites, the same shaft I already play in my Maltby PTMs. Something about those shafts really suit my swing, and I love the feeling I get from them. To be honest, the biggest surprise with the irons was how much I hated the Nippon Modus 105s. Just felt all wrong to me.

This was the first time I've spent significant time on Trackman since my lessons over the past few months, and I was ecstatic to see my club path with my irons has improved a lot. Most swings are now neutral or slightly in-to-out, which led to a bunch of nice draws with the SpeedZone 7-iron I hit.

We then moved to the top of the bag, working through a few different combinations of hybrid lofts and shafts. I'm not a huge fan of hybrids, but I've found the Cobra hybrids seem to work pretty well for me. Josh was very careful to ensure that the combo we settled on didn't go left like so many hybrids can do.

Obviously, the SpeedZone driver and fairways woods were the biggest pieces of puzzle for the day. I wish I could say I striped a bunch of great shots with both, but the reality is my driver and fairway wood swings need a lot of work.

I am very steep with my wood swings, and generate a lot of spin. We cycled through a bunch of different head settings and shafts trying to knock that down and eventually settled on a tour length SpeedZone Xtreme, turned down to 7.5 degrees, with the Aldila Rogue Silver. I really liked the feel of the Rogue Silver and with a few tweaks I did start hitting some better shots. Just for fun we also cycled through some exotic shafts, and I'm now in love with the Fujikura Motore X...

The final specs I will be submitting to Cobra are:

Driver - Cobra SpeedZone Xtreme 9 Degree, Tour Length (44.5"), Aldila Rogue Silver 60 Stiff - Set to 7.5 Degrees
3 Wood - Cobra SpeedZone 14.5 Degree, -3/4", Aldila Rogue Silver 70 Stiff - Set to 13.5 Degrees
    2 Hybrid  - Cobra SpeedZone, -1/2", UST Recoil 480 ESX F4
    4-GW - Cobra SpeedZone, -1/2", 2 Degrees Flat, KBS C-Taper Lite Stiff
54, 58 Wedges - KING Black, Versatile Grind, 3 Degrees Flat (if that can be done), KBS C-Taper Lite Stiff (soft-stepped once)
Grips - Lamkin Sonar Cobra Connect

Overall, today was an extremely fun and rewarding day.

I’m happy to hear your fitting went so well!!! Seems like one hell of a setup you got there. I expect I’ll be debating between the CTL and $Taper tomorrow. Although I’ve never actually been fitted for irons before (which I’m super excited about doing) so I really have no idea what to expect, those just kinda “seem” like they’d fit my game well.

The secret to that is doing a perfect haka.  Am I right @GB13?

I dunno, if his Haka is “high, dirty, and sexy”, I’m not sure I want to see it anymore.

Mayyyyyyte, the Haka is all in the thighs....

If I don’t wanna see your sexy calves, I sure as hell don’t want to see your dirty, sexy thighs.

I didn’t realize you were a winner as well! Congrats! 🙌🏼

Which set will you be testing?

    Thank you!!

I’ll be testing the conventional length Forged Tec irons with the MIM wedges.

I wouldn’t call it cowardice. But as you said, it’s a big risk to take the leap and invest into a new concept after one has grooved their iron swing over many years. One also has to worry if Cobra would ever abandon the concept ... then what happens when it comes time to update one’s existing OL irons.

Not sure if I read it on MGS or elsewhere, but a significant percentage of Cobra’s new irons sales are the OLs.

If it weren’t for my recent Titleist TS2 Driver purchase, I’d likely pull the trigger and buy their OL Forged Tec. Thinking it’s more and more likely the OL irons will be my next set and hoping I can convince myself before year end. It seems as though the science and technology behind the OL concept is becoming more mature for Cobra. 🐍

I don’t really except Cobra to abandon the OL concept. In fact, I’d lean toward thinking other manufacturers might add an OL option. I think it is gaining popularity, both with people who just want to consistently groove one swing, and people who don’t have as much time to practice as they want to. Those two categories make up a very large segment of the golfing population. Not only does the theory behind the OL make sense to most people, Cobra markets it really, really well.

When you do pull the trigger, keep us updated here as to the results. I’d be very interested in how they work out for you.

@GB13and @B.Boston share most of my sentiments as well.

Early/mid-season like it is, after spending a lot of time since November taking lessons and practicing, I'd like to compete with something similar to my current makeup. While the SpeedZone irons are more lofted than my Maltby PTMs, I hope that I can expect similar performance with hopefully more forgiveness.

If I could get my hands on one lengths in October, and practice all winter, then I'd be game to try them.

    Cowardice, mostly... 😂

Couldn’t agree more. The Forged Tec irons are certainly a bit of a change from my I200s, but it wouldn’t be anything like going OL!!

First hole in one ever thanks to my Cobra King F9 Black 50° wedge.  120 yard shot that landed just past the hole and spun back in.  You guys are in for a real treat with these Cobra clubs!

Whoever gets the first hole in one during the challenge has my complete support!

AWESOME!!! Congrats man!! That must’ve been one beautiful shot.

...and if your waiting for a hole-in-one from us, you’ll be waiting a lonnnnnng time...

I don't think anyone can beat the number of rounds you played. Is there going to be a "play more rounds than Foz" week?

I hope not, none of us will even come close to the numbers Foz put up! If that was a challenge, I’d certainly not be winning.

Oh, you’ll be doing the Haka by week 5. But sure, go ahead and think that I don’t control your every move. Let’s see where that gets you... 🙄

    3 hours ago, JohnSmalls said:

@edingc , @Nunfa0 and I have the exact same driver.  I have to agree that it's a bomber. As long as I'm swinging it 'okay' I only have to worry about a one way miss.   IMO tour-length is the way to go.

I’m really planning on keeping an open mind during the fitting for length. I do need the extra consistency because currently I’m *very* inconsistent with the driver, but again, I’m going to keep an open mind.

    2 hours ago, JohnSmalls said:

Is anyone thinking about going MIM on the wedges?

Yes, I’m very excited about these wedges. My original PING Glides have enjoyed the longest tenure in my bag of any club, and these wedges have quite the battle in front of them. Frankly, if I were buying new wedges, I might look for the exact same ones, just with fresher grooves. Currently I only have a 2 wedge set-up, 52° and 58°, which creates some strange gaps, so I’m planning on a 50° 54° 58° (or 60°) setup.

I have to tell you. I really liked them as well once I stopped drooling on the Forged Tec.  I actually liked the Carbon Fiber top line look.  I didn't find it distracting at all.

I agree with you about liking the carbon fiber top line, I think it’s a cool visual. And even if it isn’t your thing, I can’t imagine you’d notice it after a few swings.

A lot of attention has been put on the irons here.  Mostly by some wayward Moderator 😉

But I think it's safe to say.  All 5 of you will have the big star of the show.  The SpeedZone driver is flat out awesome looking.

I think the infinity face makes it possibly the best looking driver on the market.
And I keep hearing nothing but raves for the SZ Extreme.  From players of all levels.

This is going to be a special challenge for sure.

I can’t wait to get my hands on the SZ, I think Cobra really broke through into the driver scene with the F9, and they made one of the best drivers of last year even better....

    I predict some BOMBS!!

    Hey @B.Boston and @GB13

Definitely not the beastly shaft's I'm sure you guys will end up with but just something to wet your appetite a bit.

Are you trying to torture me?!? This is cruel!! As if the wait wasn’t excruciating enough already!

Those are absolutely some of the nicest looking irons out there. I love matte and chrome metal contrast. If they play half as nice as they look, we’re in for a treat!

Oh, and I should have known that you already would have a set...
