  1. Despite the rather odd looking hats, Shriners Hospital has been doing amazing work for children for decades - seriously changing the outlook for many patients and their families.  I watch this event most years and love the Shriners commercials.  I don't know the answer to your question.

Not very well yesterday - too embarrassed to tell you the final tally. Went from wearing shorts and polo to yesterday 3 layers, long pants and was still cold. Should be warmer this weekend into Monday so hoping i can quickly recover otherwise my Index is going to take a beating.

It's only one round.  Could be the change in clothing bunching up yur swing 😉.

  3. So what becomes the diffference between professional and amatuer athletes?  If Clemson's #16 or Georgia's #7 can broker $1M "likeness" endorsement contracts, how are they any different than professional players?  How about any money they earn (that they wouldn't otherwise get if not part of the team) is offset dollar for dollar in scholarship money? This could be used for other athletes. Pandora's Box indeed.

I think playing a sport and getting $160,000 of debt-free education IS getting paid.

    Great point 👍

I get the University makes money off of #23’s jersey, but they also need that to pay for #11 on the women’s soccer team to have a jersey, cleats, a scholarship, and food!

But Gavin sees this as an injustice to #23... which is really odd when you think about it.

  5. Hey all.  I wanted to provide an update on this.  I purchased and just started wearing this compression strap.  It had great reviews - though to be honest several did.

    https://www.amazon.com/SENTEQ-Elbow-Brace-Support-Strap/dp/B01GY7AIRW/ref=sr_1_33?dchild=1&keywords=forearm+band&qid=1570142989&sr=8-33

I've only worn it for a few days now but thus far find it quite comfortable, not bulky and, best of all, helping reduce the pain. For instance, today I was doing some spot spraying of weeds and sometimes holding the weight of the tank makes the elbow pinch - not so with this on 🤗.

I kind of like that it is a little wider than most and the velcro adjustment is really aggressive and holds.  I've taken some swings with it on and it feels fine and does not slide down.  Whether it does during play and when it's hot and I'm sweating is TBD.  Here's a couple of pictures of it.

We have stakes marked red with green tops to identify the environmentally sensitive areas. In our case, it is an automatic 1 stroke penalty using the drop rule for a red stake. You cannot enter those areas. At least that’s how our course is marked

So basically play it like a water hazard?

I would venture to guess that there are hundreds of side effects that people haven't thought of that will come into play once the NCAA's hand has been forced, and athletes start getting compensation for whatever.  Several things pop in my head inititally - disparity between the Alabamas and Clemsons, and the lower tier schools, even in power 5 conferences that can't compete with the recruiting that those schools currently have going on.  You'll have to create an entirely new business model for college football and basketball, and separate it from all other NCAA sports that lose tons of money.  Once you start paying football and basketball players, schools will be forced to kill other sports such as lacrosse, softball, tennis, golf, etc, due to lack of funds.

I'd also imagine that academics will become irrelevant to football and basketball, as now you have paid players who, because of now being compensated for their sport, will have raised expectations to perform on the field, therefore forcing them to double the amount of time spent working out, practicing and preparing for games.

TV contracts and current conference alignments will split, and current conferences will split off into sub conferences, and perhaps even separate leagues, akin to what we have with professional leagues.  Currently the NFL has two 16 team conferences.  What's stopping the SEC and ACC (for example) from splitting off from the rest of the NCAA, and competing solely against each other, in order to provide legitimate competition week in and week out.  Remember, a school's revenue is now decreased in the ability to pay "Georgia State" $950,000 to travel to Tennessee and beat Tennessee.  So to eliminate that added expense, the top conferences will form their own leagues, and compete on a level playing field, solely amongst schools agreeing to the same level of competition.

These are just some of the side effects of what I think is coming that the Gavin Newsomes of the world haven't thought about.  But once you open Pandora's Box, this system that we know will never return to what it was.  Do I agree with what California is doing?  Yes.  But I think forcing the NCAA's hand is about 30 years overdue, and ultimately again, I think if you get 30 or so schools in a room from the largest and most popular sports programs in college football, you'll be dividing that pie among a lot fewer schools, as they weed out the schools that don't invest heavily in their players and programs, like Alabama and Clemson, and about 20 other schools currently do.

Good points and most of these will become issues that will negatively change the face of collegiate sports.  Honestly, I doubt Gavin cares about the "unintended consequences". That's the great thing about lawmaker jobs; first that it rarely affects them directly and second that, more often than not, it will be someone's else's pile of poop to deal with 🙄.

Oh and btw, nice to see you back.  I haven't seen many posts from you as when I first joined the forum.

  8. He needs to spend some time with this guy and learn the subtle techniques to passive-aggressive fan control 🙂.

At the 2015 US Open (Chambers Bay), I watched Poult's flip off a fan in the bleachers who yelled out "nice shot Poulter" as he walked onto the 17th green (Saturdays round).  His ball had hit the green but then rolled into the front bunker... with nearly the entire crowd urging it along 🤣.  He turned to the bleachers and adjusted his visor - that no one caught that in a photo and pasted it all over the interwebz is amazing.  I was in said bleachers and clearly saw the response - which drew some boos and grumbles.

Yeah, banned for 3 years seems a wee bit harsh by US pro sport standards.  That sign language is used so frequently here, it's odd the media still feels the need to blackout the offending digit.

The CA bill will take 4 years to go into effect. While they passed the law, I don't see the NCAA sitting idle for the next 4 years, nor will they in the other states. I still think we're 5-8 years away from any of this going through, but yes, I expect to see some schools either defecting or 'schools' popping up which have little to do with education and more of preparing athletes for the pro leagues (i.e. IMG Academy for high school athletes). If the NCAA wants to allow athletes to profit off their likeness, then setup a fund for that money to go in and after 3 years in school, they can collect it with interest.

If the NFL would pitch in to fund/help with these athletic-only schools, then I think you could keep these minor league schools away from the amateur schools of the NCAA. Develop 16 of these athletic-centered schools and these 'students' could get paid, sign agent contracts, etc and keep the NCAA the way it is. Sure, you will probably dilute the talent pool a bit but there are athletes out there that do in fact want an education.

    Good ideas!

The NCAA will still exist but in a very different way than we have come to know.

That's my hope and, should it go this route, whose games I'll still watch.  We're just witnessing another venue get ruined by the elixir of money.  Next up are high school players 🙄.

I still dont know how to feel about this one. How much money the colleges and NCAA make off these kids is insane but if someone takes them out to dinner and pays, they are in violation of codes but at the same time, I dont want it to be all about money so recruits will only go to CA schools now to make money.

Agree.  I don't want to see college football essentially become the NFL. Sure, these Division I programs have become huge money making machines, but for me college football still has a completely different feel than the NFL (which I rarely watch anymore). I mean, why stop at the college level?  One could make an argument for high school players. The NCAA could ban the teams and/or players who violate the rules, but that's doubtful.  Maybe CA will just start their own collegiate-pro league.  Won't these players be shocked when they get their first tax bills 🤣.

Must win for the Wolverines this weekend.

If not, I think Jimmy will be in a warm seat.

I think Jimmy has developed a resistance to the warm seat.  Their remaining schedule is tough... really tough. 😮

  12. Well it appears the AP and Coaches polls see it differently than me... whodathunkit?  More motivation for Clemson so, for the anti-Bama's, this could be a plus. I'm surprised ND moved up one in the AP but I guess they are crediting the win over then #18 and undefeated Virginia.  I was somewhat expecting they might move out of the top 10.  They probably will next week, even with a win Saturday, if Florida, PSU, WF, and SMU all win.  Gotta start making room for the undefeated.  I know it's way early, but I'm really hoping for a Georgia vs. Clemson playoff game.

I noticed last night during the OSU game that Kirk Herbstrict never acknowledged Georgia. He can’t stand the Dawgs.

Well, you wouldn't guess that by the argument he presented in defense of Georgia last season...  with his alma-mater squarely in the middle of the debate.

  14. I'm ok with the SEC lovefest... at least it's not the PAC 12.  As for Clemson's squeaker yesterday, I would argue it will serve to get their attention and boost their level of play.  Add to that a remaining schedule of unranked opponents and their bid to play for the repeat is all but complete.  Not sure if it's possible, but I'd love to see a Clemson vs. Georgia and OSU vs. Alabama playoffs.  It would take some serious miscues for my Irish to get a bid even assuming they can finish with only one loss.

It won't move them from #1 IMO.  Notre Dame was up 14-10 wen we headed out for a dinner party.  I was concerned about a solid Virginia squad but glad to see my team prevailed.  Pending the outcome of the Utah vs Washington State, it looks like week 5 is following the script.

  16. What a great format.  I love seeing the First Tee kids getting a chance to play alongside the Champion Tour players. What a lifelong memory playing Pebble Beach and Poppy Hills with this prolific list of pros!  This is the stuff that grows the game into the future - and something I'd personally like to see more of over the course of the season.  This year, the amateurs are getting to use their handicap; that will make it a bit tougher on the pros 🙂.

I was talking with my Fitter about drivers - he's got a 10 yr old driver in his bag that he won't trade for anything new. Interesting.

That is interesting.  One would think being around all the various new clubs and marketing hype, and being so involved with the modern golf fitting technology, would simply be too much to resist.
