  1. Hey everyone - another Boston area golfer here. I'm in for an outing with other MGS folks.
  2. May I have the hole in 1 badge please? Made my first ace this past weekend!! While you're at it, the broke 90 would be great as well. Thanks!
  3. Happy to report that with a few weekend course openings already this season, I've made some progress on this challenge even in the New England weather! I think I was very much correct about the easiest holes... I've already completed all but 1 of those pars. However, I was pleased to note that I've parred two of the hard holes as well. Seems like a real possibility I can finish this off in the next couple months, and then start the birdie challenge. I doubt I'll complete all 18 of those, but I would be thrilled to make 9.
  4. Agreed, I had the same issue. I don't mind the idea of DTC, but in general if I'm going to buy without getting fit I'd rather buy preowned clubs made by the major manufacturers. Then I get cutting edge technology (which, I'll admit, is of minimal use to me, since I don't swing nearly fast enough to really get the benefit from it), but also a fantastic price. If I was serious about purchasing an actually new set of clubs, I'd go to a fitter and spend the extra money to make sure that the product was best for me. That being said, if I went to a fitter, and the choice was between a Callaway/TM/Ping/Cobra product or a DTC club that fit me equally well, I'd have no qualms with "sacrificing" the brand name to save some $$.

Agreed. You can't take that away from him. It's just a shame he's brought the controversy on himself, because he doesn't need to cheat to win tournaments... So why do that to yourself and to the game?

Time for me to turn it off. I find Reed so hard to watch... It's always a disappointment to me when he's leading. Lost a little more respect for him this week after listening to the Kostis interview the NLU guys did...
  7. This might be one of my favorite quotes ever. I 100% agree!
  8. I get it... The problem is I also hate not playing golf for 5 months! And sim golf isn't my favorite
  9. Hi everyone, Like most of us here, I'm an avid golfer. There's nothing I love more than a perfect spring day, 70°, no wind, and just enough cloud cover to reduce my sunburn a bit. However, I live in New England and those days are few and far between. Over the course of the winters, I usually get impatient for golf season to start. Occasionally courses around me will open for a "nice" 38° weekend, and I will go play 18 frozen fairways and greens. Other times I'll grab some time on a simulator, but its expensive (and if I'm being honest, the short game isn't even close to realistic). My question for you all, at least those who have to contend with the winter months, is what do you do? Do you like to go out and play winter golf? Grab some time on a sim? Suffer through golf withdrawal until spring returns? I'd love to hear your thoughts!
  10. I've been working on my putting a lot this offseason on a mat in my spare bedroom. I had been using a two thumb type grip (similar to what GolfSpy MPR uses), but switched to something a bit more like a two-finger overlap grip. While I really like the balance the dual thumbs with fingers down the side provided, I wasn't able to get the forward press I like to use to feel comfortable, which was leading to some face angle issues. As a sidenote, I've been struggling with an inexplicable tendency to pull my putts to the left the last couple weeks. Checked that I wasn't putting sidespin on the ball, checked to make sure the ball was getting online... I tried everything. I tried changing grips, nothing worked - couldn't figure it out. It dawned on me this morning that it might not be my fault so I checked the floor. Sure enough, my putting mat was on an uneven part of the floor and apparently reading hardwoods are not my strongpoint. Moved the mat and magically everything straightened out.
  11. Great looking bag! I play at SR too - hope to see you out there sometime.
  12. Am I wrong to be a bit surprised at the price of these putters? I guess it will depend on how they perform, but a quick Google showed me I can grab a Bettinardi 2020 BB8 Wide for $300 or an Evnroll ER2 Mid-blade for $329. I think I would have expected the TA to be closer to the $200 range, but maybe I'm just crazy
  13. Big fan of NLU here as well. I'll clearly have to check out Get a Grip. The two Brad Faxon episodes are some of my favorites (255, 276) Thought that Kostis' comments were refreshing and I appreciated his honesty (although I'll admit there was definitely some bitterness toward a former employer)

It strikes me that this event/venue is a good example of what every tournament could look like in several years if the ball keeps going farther and farther...
  15. I love this! I'm in. Starting with the pars challenge, but will record birdies as well. If I finish the pars quickly, I will try and round out the birdies! My home course: Shining Rock Golf Club, Northbridge, Massachusetts Hole 1 | Par 4 | 411: Primarily tricky because I'm not warmed up when I tee off. Plays downhill and short, but anything off the back of the green is a disaster. Hole 2 | Par 4 | 384: Fairly wide open hole, with a narrow green. This one is gettable with a good tee shot but that's no guarantee for me. Hole 3 | Par 5 | 504: Last 150 yards or so are a forced carry, so it's usually best for me to lay up. I can make birdie here for sure Hole 4 | Par 4 | 282: Short with a dog-leg right. Green is blocked by some trees, but I can reach with a little 3w fade. This birdie has my name on it too. Hole 5 | Par 3 | 219: Long par three. This is going to be extremely challenging for me to birdie but a par is very achievable. Hole 6 | Par 4 | 300: This isn't a hard hole as long as you land on the right level of the two-tier green. Doesn't fit my eye (read: hook) well at all, but I can conquer it. Hole 7 | Par 4 | 290: Pretty short, uphill par 4. The green is diabolical... if the flag is on the front, it's better to be short of the green than to land 10 feet past the flag. Hole 8 | Par 3 | 148: Tricky green, but really manageable hole. I'll make birdie here Hole 9 | Par 5 | 485: One of the more open and straight-forward holes on the course. Just don't lose the tee shot right. Hole 10 | Par 4 | 360: Stay middle or right on the fairway, and this straight par 4 is your friend. No concerns here Hole 11 | Par 4 | 372: Plenty of landing space for the driver on this hole, which opens up as it bends a little left. The green is very receptive. Hole 12 | Par 3 | 188: Tricky hole and a bit uphill. Not much space to miss the green here if you want to find your ball. This will be a challenge to biride. Hole 13 | Par 5 | 478: This one is all about the tee shot. Looks wide open off the tee, but land in the wrong spot and you'll have a miserable second shot. Hole 14 | Par 4 | 345: Swing away here. One of the easier holes for me to play. Hole 15 | Par 3 | 180: Wide open par 3 but a very tricky green. Will struggle to make birdie here. Hole 16 | Par 5 | 563: For me this is long. If I'm not playing well, I'll be struggling to be in range of a GIR. I'd be thrilled to make birdie here. This is going to be a hard one. Hole 17 | Par 4 | 312: I could copy this one straight off the original post... Easiest hole on the course (for me). Downhill. Hope to have multiple birdies on this hole. Hole 18 | Par 4 | 375: Elevated tee and wide fairway. The angle of the green makes my approach shot the bigger challenge. I'll make a birdie here eventually. Easiest holes for me: 3, 4, 9, 10, 14, 17 Hardest holes for me: 1, 2, 5, 12, 15, 16
  16. Hi everyone, Available for sale today is a Project X Evenflow Blue 75g Driver shaft (6.0/Stiff flex). 44.25“ from grip to adapter tip. Shaft itself is in excellent condition. Grip has plenty of life left, but is not new. Purchased it from Callaway Preowned in a Rogue driver, but it was too heavy for me to swing effectively. Willing to let it go for $60 shipped OBRO. Also up is a set of Rogue headcovers (Dr, 3w, 5w). These are in fantastic shape. Please note that the interchangeable tags denoting the fairway wood type (e.g., "3") have been carefully glued into the holder so can no longer be adjusted. They kept falling out and I didn't want to lose my last set of tabs... $35 takes the set shipped to you. Finally, there's a Taylormade M4 3HL (16.5°) with a Tensei CK Blue 60S shaft. There are some marks on the silver part of the crown (which are partially covered over) but otherwise it's in great shape. I'll let it go for $90 shipped OBRO including the headcover.
  17. I usually keep two different balls in my bag. A couple sleeves of a high quality (urethane cover) ball, and a couple sleeves of something cheaper for those days I'm slinging them all over the place. I totally buy into playing one ball to eliminate variables, and I get that the stats show it would help my game slightly to play a good quality ball... but I really don't think the woods or the penalty areas care what material the cover is made of...
  18. I stopped by a DSG this morning after seeing the MGS article yesterday and wanted to check out the irons in person. I was pretty surprised not to see any of the 845 irons available on the floor. I know that DSG has different levels of golf sub-sections and that they vary by store (so not every store will have every version of the irons). However, if you want the market to view you as more than a knock-off brand, I feel like you need to take yourself seriously to have the base model of your irons available on the release date in every store. I don't see myself ever taking the time to go back to DSG to look at the new 845s so in my mind that's a marketing opportunity missed for them.
  19. Same here. I understand that Koepka feels his career will only be measured by his majors, but as a fan of the game I find it hard to root for a younger guy (with a chip on his shoulder) who isn't out there playing golf for the love of the game on a regular basis. I think it's extremely impressive that he has won four majors, but I don't enjoy watching him at all.
  20. Sounds great! Would love to meet some fellow members. Shining Rock is a beautiful course, although I'll admit some of the holes are a bit quirky (which I don't mind at all).
  21. Good afternoon all! Thought it was about time to introduce myself and start participating here! Really hoping to meet some fellow locals and start to expand my network of folks to play with! 1. How long have you been playing golf? What’s your handicap or normal score? -I've been playing for two full years. Got the golf itch in 2017 but didn't do much about it. In the late winter/early spring of '18, I started hitting the driving range on a weekly basis, and started to play some local 9-hole spots once the weather got nice. Since then, I've gotten more and more excited about the game, and play as often as I can. Over last season I was averaging scores in the mid-90s. I've taken several lessons, and have been working obsessively on my putting this offseason, but am really hoping to take a big step forward this coming spring and will probably rededicate myself to some lessons. 2. What do you love about golf? -What don't I love about golf!!? I love the self-competitive aspect; the healthy ability to push myself constantly to get better. I love the strategy of playing the game, especially when I'm hitting the ball well. I love being on the course, being outside, meeting fellow golfers on the course, geeking out over equipment. It's an amazing game and I'm thankful to have found it. 3. What brings you to MyGolfSpy? Do you already know any other Spies? -I always have a tendency to be a bit of an equipment nerd when I'm taking on a new hobby. Golf was no different, but finding MGS gave me an outlet to learn about equipment with a statistical mindset that speaks to my personality. I don't know any other Spies, but I share the website every chance I get!! 4. Where are you from? What is your home course? -I'm from Upton, MA (right next to Hopkinton, where the Boston Marathon starts). My home course is Shining Rock Golf Club, where I'm a weekday member. I also play quite often at Juniper Hill in Northborough, and Sandy Burr in Wayland. 5. What are the best and worst things about golf in your region? -Best is the number of beautiful summer days we have to play where the temperature isn't oppressive! Love the fall foliage as well. The tough part is that the season is fairly short, so I get a little golf crazy in the winter. 6. What do you do for a living? I'm an investment actuary by trade. I work on large corporate retirement plans for a large consulting firm in Boston. I'm a huge numbers guy. 7. How’d you pick your user name? -Not sure how I picked my username, but I've been using it for online forums for ages. Obviously there's a Matrix connection, but I can't even remember the last time I saw that movie...
