I was at the range today trying to get a handle on which iron was reliable for a 100 yard shot. Up until today it's always been my Gap Wedge. I noticed the last round I played I had 80 yards to the pin. Took out my 54 degree wedge and proceeded to sail over the green. Which brings me to today and checking yardage. Both my Gap and 54 wedge are pretty consistent at 100 yards carry. The Gap is a Ping G410, the 54 degree wedge is a Callaway MD3. Trying to understand why these 2 clubs on a full swing are consistently the same yardage? Any thoughts? Chris

Over the course of the winter here and chatting with the pro I know I'm hitting down with my irons, my angle of attach is generally around -4 degrees. I worked with him for a few lessons as my driver was also -4 degrees, after the lessons the best I could do on the sim was +2 degrees, but out on the course I do just fine, hitting +11 degrees according to my portable launch monitor. What I have discovered in mostly my fairway woods is that they seem to be hitting a tad behind the ball, which with the mat the club is allowed to bounce off the mat and still make contact with the ball, something that rarely, if ever happens on the course. So when I was playing the sim league I never used my fairway woods. The one thing that, for me is an issue, I really want to see a real ball in flight and not rely on what a computer says the ball flight is. I know a lot of folks get caught up in spin numbers and such, for me I can gain much more information from watching the ball fly, I guess I'm just too "old school" for the fancy launch computers...

I tried that approach, but I find that I'm more of a feel player when it comes to chipping and pitching. The sim just seemed to "dry" for me to get comfortable with the close stuff.

Well, the weather here in my part of Michigan finally got to a point where the courses finally opened, so off I went, happier than a kid in a candy shop. This past winter I spent much more time on a simulator as there was one only 10 minutes away. I learned rather quickly that I had developed some BAD habits hitting balls on that simulator. It seemed thst my tee height was off a bit, took 2 holes to adjust that one, my irons needed some tweaking hitting off "real" turf instead of simulator turf. The biggest problem was fairway woods. On all par 5's my fairway woods (3 & 7) royally suckered. So when next the weather cooperates it off yo the range to unlearn the bad habits from too much simulator. Has anyone else had this experience? Chris

I lost one this winter, well...kinda lost. Hitting a 60 degree wedge the ball hit just above the screen, in the crack between the screen and the padding over the screen. Ball went right thru.... I have no idea where it ended up...Lost ball on a sim....go figure! Chris

As I think about possibly a new putter one question that keeps popping up in my head is about the face. I see so many groove patterns out there along with smooth faces. Is there really a difference between each? Smooth vs groove? Chris

For me the putter is the last piece of the puzzle. I have 7 putters, I tinker with all of them thru the winter hoping that one of them will "be the one", haven't found it yet, which is why I keep searching and buying putters. But I got agree with the OP, it sure is fun to get a new putter and finding out what it can do!!!

I've been using mine for a couple of years now, works great. I have 3 acres for a yard and will sometimes put it on it's back laying down and chip and pitch into it. Great short game pratice. Chris

Wanted to let everyone know in the Centralish part of Michigan, there are 2 new sim locations that I found recently. One is in Gladwin Michigan, a Trackman set up located at the Riverwalk Place. The second is Pinconning Mi, located on 11 mile between Pinconning road and Estey road, The old elementary school building called "Golf 101" . Not sure which one that one is, but it's a good one. My question is hotel adjustments. Lower COG has N,S,D and +1. Upper COG has N,-1,D and +2. I'm unable to line up the N's on both cogs. So I want the stated loft with a neutral setting. How do I set the cogs for this?

I just got plain tired of always coming up short, so I got "real" about my distance with the clubs, ego set aside (not easy). Also accepted my age as a factor. And came to the realization that the number on the bottom doesn't matter, getting close to the hole does. So when in doubt I club up to be sure. I can say that this season I'm doing much better at getting hole high, sometimes long which is better for my game in the long run. Chris

I'd say your in a good spot with your game. Not many can say that. I would say I'm pretty much in the same spot, I practice a bit of chipping and pitching in my yard and some putting at the course, but thats the extent of it. I know where my short comings are and the only way to remedy that would be more time on the course. Neither my wife or my body would allow. I truly enjoy being out on the course, I never keep score so my handicap is a guess at best ( when I do play with others I'm usually in the low 40's). For me it's all about the fresh air, exercise and the course and how she's feeling on that day. I think shes calling me now.... Chris

I'd have to agree with Tat2Golf on this. Once I was able to leave the "driver" idea behind and look at the course in a logical mind my score dropped. I still have situations like Tat2Golf where the guys I'm playing with are heading to the tee with drivers and I have a 5 iron. After all the drives I'm the only one in the middle of the fairway while everyone else is in trouble. And one of them usually says "I hate it when some guy plays smart" At this point in my life I'll look at the yardage of the hole (on 4's and 5's) and get a plan based on getting to the 100 yard mark for my approach shot onto the green. This usually equates to many 4 woods off the tee. Chris

All I can offer is when I hit it on the hosel it generally tells me that I'm stretching out so on the next hole I line up on the middle outside bump on the crown (Ping G410) and I connect in the middle again. I notice this is mostly dependent on weather, the warmer, the more out on the crown I have to line up, when it's colder or I'm getting tired, I go closer in on the crown. I find myself constantly adjusting based on the hole and temperature. Hope this helps a little. Chris

Well, my 2 cents worth is this. From what I can find out gloves were used to help with gripping the club when the old leather grips were used and they got wet or at least damp. The popularity really took off when Arine started wearing one, he looked "cool" so everyone wanted to wear one and even more so when Jack started wearing one. As you noted Ben never gave in. As for me I tried for a while when I started back at the game around 2000, but shortly stopped wearing one. It just seemed to just get in the way. Haven't wore one since. I believe that most people wear them out of habit and marketing. With the advanced compounds in grips these days I, for one believe you don't need a glove. Which is why I don't wear one. Chris

Thanks for the info. It answers all the questions I had about them. For me a fitter is at least 2 hours away. Not sure if I'll ever pursue Dollar Driver Club or not, but now I know how it works. Chris

Just wondering if anyone out has ever tried this service. I can see where it would be a good thing, being able to try a driver in a real world situation, but at the same time I'm not sure how legit this is. Chris

I have to say I totally agree with you on this.

I'm looking to confirm my thinking here. Hitting higher on the face of the driver will give you a higher spin rate, is that correct? and the higher spin rate will shorten you yardage off the tee, is that also correct? Optimal for spin would be the middle of the face? Chris
