  1. As a ‘putter ho,’ I’ve amassed a decent collection over the years. Some that didn’t work with me were sold. I’ve paid in the $200-$300 for quality, pre-owned SCs and Toulons. Given the importance of the putter, I could see justifying more if fitted with a specific $$$ putter.
  2. BEST: 1 Mizuno JPX 919. Custom fitted birthday present from my bride. 2 Srixon Soft Feel balls. Work great and love them off club faces. 3 Vokey SM 7 wedges and online fitter. Still not consistent, but work better than stock set or “gimmick wedges” (see below). 4 ANY Sun Mountain golf bag. 5 Cliqgear 3.0+ cart - pimped out, with Alphard Golf Club Booster V2. The only way to fly for a push cart mafioso! WORST: 1 “Gimmick wedges,” including Callaway, Tour Edge, and *gulp* The Alien. They didn’t help my short game. 2 Recycled golf balls. YRMV, but don’t work for me. 3 Too many golf “how to” books. Bought most of the biggies, screwed my mind into my shoulders. Still seek consistency by mantra now is “just hit the ball.” 4 Cheap golf gloves. ‘Nuff said. 5 Go Golf Skechers (1st gen). Clunky, hot, no arch support and NOTHING like Go Walk versions for comfort.
  3. I switched to Golf Pride CP2 Pro midsize three years ago. I like the solid feel and tackiness. I like Winn for the ‘padding,’ but found a SS that’s similar and cheaper. I’ve had SS 3.0 putter grip forever!
  4. My 2015 GBB 10.5* remains the solid gamer. Have Epic Flash, XR and a 12.5* 2015 GBB on the shelf. None of them compare, or are as consistent for me.
  5. I’ve had two pair of FJs with BOA for over three years now. I’ve never had an issue with either pair, and love that they’re easy to use and stay snug. I will only consider discounted shoes with BOA laces now. I’m completely sold!
  6. My three rescue pups. Roscoe, Cammie, and Margie.
  7. Done. TW is the ultimate golf influencer. His clothing brand grew from design and quality. Why not rebrand and fill closets with NEW items. Logo is unique and will become easily identifiable. Makes perfect brand sense.
  8. I grew up on this course in the 70’s. My parents bought a house off the member’s 14th green (#4 for the event). Ironically, Tony Jacklin bought that house from the folks who bought it from my folks. I wasn’t into the CC snobfest, but played JR club and HS events there. I also brushed tennis courts and worked on the groundskeeper crew in those days (much to the dismay of the silver spoon spawn I knew). It was nice to see the improvement, especially removing the pines for coquina areas (less likely to find a snake when the pine straw was gone). Seeing the cart path on #6 reminded me when two ladies drove their cart over a sunning gator, right by the red tees! . The bridge from #5 to #6 was after my time. You used to be able to drive between the pond and green to #6. It was a mixed bag for me down memory lane, but I was glad to see amother great Donald Ross course made even better and shown off, for her century anniversary.
  9. My SC 5.5M has been the most consistent gamer. However, being a putter ho, I have a bunch of options. In December, on a whim, I pulled out a Bobby Grace (not McGregor) “The Fat Lady Swings,” 35” with original grip and knit cover. Not wanting to lose the original issue specs, I took off the grip and replaced it with a SS 3.0+, leaving it at 35” (2” longer than my “fit size.”). I putt more upright, which helps my cranky back, with the heel up. Being more upright keeps my arms and elbow more in a pendulum format - another bonus! Now, all I need to do is determine pace, load, lock and putt. My lags are better, hindered only by the pace. So far, so great!
  10. I would rather walk for the health of it. I’m considering a motorized bag cart, but already have an equipped Cliqgear 3.5. Does anyone use an Alphard on their Cliqgear 3.5? If so, what do you think about the setup - good and bad?
  11. I think “fun” is dependent on age, ability and competitive nature. When you’re younger, ability and competitive nature should be at their highest level - with one or both likely declining with age. That said, “fun” is what you make it. If you golf for exercise, friends and “mental floss,” “fun” should be easy. On the other hand, if you’re focused on performance/outcome than pleasure - YRMV.
  12. Having done both, I feel there are advantages to both. Obviously, private lessons are focused, but there is synergistic benefit in group sessions. I tend to learn from my questions, as well as questions from others - that I didn’t think of. Seeing others try the same technique also helps to reinforce the lesson, even if they aren’t “getting it.” Seeing others perform/correct flaws helps me get the point.
  13. I’m working on dropping the weight I put back on the last two years. Everything is better with that weight gone, especially my swing path and rotation. I’m working slowly, with bands, to help my arthritic shoulders, back and knees. Even a little bit more flexibility will make a huge difference on a lot of fronts. I’m also trying tai chi for its physical and mental benefits. Meditation and visualization using Balance app has also been helpful to refocus and slow things down in my pea brain. I really miss a golf dome for winter practices. I could keep my joints happy and work on fundamentals. It was also great that my instructor was at the dome too. Where I live now there are very few public simulators. Besides that, my pea brain goes wonky on a simulator, and I have horrible results.

The Drive On is a trip down memory lane. I was born near Pittsburgh, but my family moved to Bradenton in the mid ‘60s. They bought a house right beside the 14th green (#5 this week). My father knew Bob Friend, and others from the Pirates, so it wasn’t unusual to see Danny Murtaugh and other players in our Florida Room, post golf, drinking and bitching about their round. My parents were hell bent that I’d be the next Nicklaus, to the point I hated golf. That and operant programming techniques that would make B.F. Skinner blush. I played to appease, and got to an 8 handicap in 1977. A full soccer scholarship ended my “career.” My dad always said “you could have been on tour like Paul (Azinger).” I said maybe, but I can count way above 72. (I subsequently spent 40 yrs as a statistician and market researcher, with a fair number of notable products). I last played there in 1991, and haven’t been to that area since 2007. Do I miss it. No. It’s kind of fun to see and reminisce… #11 this week (P3 w/church behind) is where I came within 1" of a HI1 (plugged ball in soft grass) I also launched one towards the church in a tail wind - no broken glass, but several car horns!
  15. Being anal retentive () I love the orderly club storage. It allows me to organize my clubs, which makes it easier to find each specific club when needed.
  16. I’ve tried all kinds of “used” balls, from 4A+, overruns and super golf show deals. Growing up in FL, where pond balls were prevalent, I avoid most online balls. While I prefer new show specials for my duo Softs ($1.50 - $2.50/ball), those deals are REALLY rare these days, especially now in BFE, where I have NO options. When I lived in N IL, I’d stock up on deals, which I’m still living on 3 yrs later. But, they are running out… My criteria is simple, get the best I can get for < $3.00/ball. That said, my game is NOT good enough to differentiate ball quality in my game, but eliminating other reasons, gives me some semblance of confidence - while exposing my consistently inconsistent game!
  17. Back in HS matches (in the 70s), I made it clear on the first tee, that I wasn’t giving any putts. These days, “inside the leather is good.”
  18. Trying to negotiate the financial transition to retirement with a few health issues, my golf time has diminished over the last two years. But the fun I have, even with inconsistent play, increased. It’s for fun, fresh air and exercise these days. I ended 2023 with 14 rounds played and my handicap rising 5.2 to 21.9 (Arccos). My 2024 goals: 1) Play more golf. At least 20 full rounds. 2) Get back to 17 handicap. 3) Get more “feels” and less over thinking. Like the commercial said “just hit the ball.” 4) Get back to my fighting weight. I play/feel better when lighter. Need to get rid of the 45 lbs I’ve put on in the last 2 yrs. 5) Have MORE fun. It’s a game, not life/death for me. “Enjoy the ride” even more!
  19. I was tired of the sophomoric, cliquish at the other “popular” sites. Self esteem was low for the admin of one site, when a group on his site became far too popular - and he closed it down, banning some folks. It’s great to get extremely viable info and mostly collegial conversations here, without the childish crap!
  20. I grew up on a golf course, with parents who were determined I would be the next Nicklaus. The only problem was I wasn’t interested - especially being force fed. I lettered in football, golf & XC at a FL HS and got a full college ride for soccer. I didn’t touch another club until 28, when my ex and I decided to play nine one Sunday, when we lived in MI. I ended up going back to FL after divorce, and only played golf once in six years back. I started up again in IL, in my late 50s - after both hips replaced and a host of stiff, messed up joints - made me reconsider the game. I’m in my mid 60s now, shoot between mid 80s to upper 90s - and enjoying every moment! I laugh at the bad shots, marvel at the good and keep my bones and mind moving. I am exceedingly competitive, except on the course. Why? I’m doing it for me, nobody else. It’s all for fun and collegiality now. Hit a few balls, have a few barley pops, and 19 holes of laughs. My friends are all better, some younger, but it doesn’t matter. We’re getting fresh air, exercise and enjoying the vistas in Central PA. I just wish we had golf domes for winter practice, like we did in northern IL. My mantra comes from the AT&T commercial “just hit the ball!” The less I think, the better I do. The Golf54 think box, play box mind set works most of the time. For most of us here, it’s JUST golf. Not brain surgery, heart surgery, or life or death. We chase a round object around a manicured cow field. Have fun!
  21. A 3W is the only one still standing, and I go between a BB and an Adams. The BB is in now with a shorter shaft, but the Adams is in reserve. I hit a 3H nearly as far as the 3W, there may be an empty spot soon.
  22. SAFE: Pretty much everything, after a crazy year of revolving… 3W (and viable alternatives), a shorter shafted BB 3W has been consistent. WEDGES: Went between fitted set that match my HM919s, and acquired, pre owned, Vokey online recommended M7s - the Vokes reclamed my bag. PUTTER: Being a putter ho, I acquired two Heppler PINGS in 23, that battled with my Scotty 5.5M. When the dust settled, the Scotty regained its spot. BALLS: Being 60+ and dealing with the outcomes of an athletic youth, I’ve tend toward Duo Soft+ balls. I have some Project S and SuperSofts that I’ve tried on occasion, as well as other lower compression models I find while searching for mine. I’m still trying to decide if a different ball would be good..
  23. I have and use both. I grew up playing chase with a shag bag, but there are times when I only want a smaller number of orbs to fetch
  24. Great thread! Thanks all! Definitely following…
