  1. There’s a Maltby book on how MPF is calculated and the measurements if you can find it. I thought I was going to get into club building and found several of his books. This may help: https://ralphmaltby.com/method-of-determining-mpf/ They can only test heads that are sent to them and some of the big names do. If you go to Ralphmaltby.com you could pose a question about MPF and someone from Maltby/Golfworks will respond. There’s “bad” MOI and there’s good MOI in Maltby’s world. Example: You could have a high MOI club head with a very high VCOG and/or jacked loft, and though the MOI is great, you have a hard time getting a playable elevation, etc. MPF isn’t the Holy Grail but I find it a good place to start and compare. Being an engineer I had to check it out. So years ago I went to a golf galaxy armed with a list of clubs based on various MPF ratings and rummaged through the used clubs. And hit those clubs. Gmax, M4, Steelhead were the most forgiving to me off the mats. I left a believer and with the GMax and later found I didn’t get along with the sole on grass as well as others. MPF is a good starting point. For me, I want 700 and above, a fairly low VCOG and as long a C-Dimension as my eyes can stand.
  2. Yes, I’m a believer in MPF, but more so with its C-dimension and Vertical Center of gravity. The larger the C the better on toe hits and the lower the VCOG slightly higher ball flight. Maltby said it would take at least a 100 point difference in MPF for most folks to tell a difference in forgiveness. I’d add though I went from Ping GMax irons years ago to TS1s and my ball striking actually improved along with my handicap. Looks and feel matter along with the shaft. MPF for the Ping is over 900 and the TS1 just a little over 700. I noticed a little extra loss of distance on toe side misses with the TS1s, but everything else I thought was as good or better. MPF is a systematic approach to quantify the dimensional characteristics of a head in a forgiveness number. It’s just the head. A forgiving head with the wrong shaft for you might not add up to what you hoped. I’m struggling between going TS1 IM or TS3. The TS3 might help me more now that I’m older with its lower VCOG, but the TS1 IM looks better to me. Golfworks will tell you iron loft has more affect on distance than a fast face. However In their forums most claim the TS1 IM is slightly longer and feels a little softer. You can't go wrong with either as they’re 700+. I’m a 10 handicap. I was a 16 when I went to TS1s if that helps. And I do believe going from a shovel sized head to a smaller sized head helped as crazy as it sounds. this link may help. https://www.golfworks.com/about-mpf/
  3. There are many golf sites that do reviews and that’s where I usually find something that interests me. From there it searching to find other reviews. I have purchased from Amazon, Golftrainingaids.com, and even the manufacturer’s site.
  4. Sorry about the back. I have three herniated discs and I have three different swings/setups based on what I can do with my hips. I too hit a fade prior. Some days I have a consistent straight pull and adjust aim which is really weird but gets things in line. Some days I have to have my feet real wide and restrict hips and fade. Some days I have to drop my right foot back and hope it’s going generally where it needs. If I’m drawing it’s due to my hands and if I hook I’m trying to make up distance with my hands that I know I’ve lost with limiting my hip turns. Play with ball position on the range. For me it doesn’t take much to change direction and flight. You might find a combo that fits your body’s new back induced swing.
  5. I haven’t played the Wilmington area but I’ve followed our youngest son around watching him play tournaments over the years. Land Fall and Eagle Point are two he played that I remember being nice but I think they’re private. Up I-40 about 40 miles from Wilmington is River Landing he played and it was nice. Closer is Cape Fear National and I’ve heard good things about it. Sorry couldn’t be more help as I live about 3 hours away from Wilmington. It’s NC though and there are many courses.
  6. Open 12 months in NC. But close for the day or start later (let temperatures rise) when <32 degrees to protect greens.
  7. Well, I was interested so I messaged the seller. The guy runs a golf shop. He goes through sets fairly often just to try and he just glued them up. Didn’t explain the grips though. I thought about puring, but not the case it appears. Still the parts are more than worth where the bid is.
  8. The shafts too as with the grips. I like the pieces but afraid of how they were put together.
  9. Sirs, I’ve been doing this for a few years and every now and then one will twist a bit, but not often. I’m using the Golfworks regular build up tape (only sticky on one side). I read somewhere that grips are made with at least a layer of tape in mind to get to design thickness. I think my tape is 0.014” thickness. I’ve blown Winn (carefully), Golf Pride, JumboMax (not easy), Star, Lamkin, Royal, and Pure grips on in my quest for the perfect grip. You just need to be mindful and not stretch things too much. If things are too tight add a drop or two of solvent. Don’t set your air pressure too high. It’s part art form with your hand on lower grip end going on and I am no artist, so you have no worries. I also need more touch around the greens. If you’re having second thoughts, my son-in-law has me do his clubs and he was leary of twisting as well.
  10. I’ve read on Maltby forums that Maltby MPF graphite shafts play almost a full flex stiffer. Regular plays closer to Stiff. I believe it as I have a TS2 with an A flex MPF shaft I picked up a few years ago when I was looking to compare TS1 and TS2. I play regular KBS in my TS1s and the MPF seems as stiff or slightly stiffer to me.
  11. @Shrek74 forgiveness is almost the same per Maltby MPF with edge to IM, feel and sound close to the same except in PW and GW edge to IM, distance slightly longer (2-3 yds?) edge to IM, looks - IM.
  12. I have TS1 5-GW, 58 max milled and both 54 TSW & 54 max milled. Depending upon what I think I need, I leave one of the 54s at home. The TS1s are sweet. I haven’t hit the TS1 IMs though. The PW and GW in TS1 are not “goo” filled as in the TS1 IM. There is a feel difference obviously. Folks claim the new face on the IM makes them a hair longer. Really I think the biggest difference is look. But I do find myself wishing my PW and GW felt like the 9 iron I just hit.
  13. After hitting it you need to tell us how the three compare!
  14. I have read of folks shipping their shafts to Golfworks and having clubs assembled. You’d have to give them a call to get this setup. Or, maybe there’s a local builder. I went local with my TS1s as the local fitter fit me for iron shafts.
  15. @azstu324Just saw the TS1 IM review…
  16. For kicks, What do you think is a good combo set using TS1-IM, TS3, TE+ V4 or TS4?
  17. Typically I hit my gap wedge square only, so I tend to stick to the set gap wedge. From what I’ve read most folks like the TT Score, but hopefully @Popeye64 can weigh in to give you some good information.
  18. Forgiveness - yes except for maybe the 430. Distance - I think all Ping drivers tend a touch shorter. But I don’t think it would be meaningful. Best thing is to go try them and see the results. I had a Ping G400Max with the standard shaft, averaged 218. I went to a fitting and hit Ping , Titleist, Cobra, and Callaway. The 400 was spinny with the standard shaft. I ended up in a Titleist for dispersion and distance. One year later I average 238. I think I could have re-shafted the 400 and gained distance too.
  19. It is a great driver for staying in the fairway. It’s not the longest and spins a little too much for me though and I finally moved on to one I was fit into.
  20. Yes. I averaged 218 for drives (tracking by a V3). Went to a respected fitter and now average 238 (via V3). Dispersion also greatly improved.
  21. I did something similar a few years back to “earn” the TS1s I’m playing. My target was to shoot 36 on 9 holes. It took a while for the stars to align. I shot 36-48 one Saturday and the very next Saturday shot 45-36 on the same course. I went from Ping Gmax irons to the TS1s and I think the smaller head helped me believe it or not.
  22. I’m needing to go graphite due to my elbow and wrists/hands. What 0.370 graphite iron shafts in the 85-95g weight range would be available and most similar to the KBS Tour 90 steel shaft for specs and profile? I’ve tried softening inserts and they do help, but not as much as hoped. Thanks.
  23. Lostgolfballs.com - have had good luck here. Great selection of balls. foundgolfballs.com - my son in law likes this site, but I haven’t tried it. Golfballs.net - not the greatest selection, but had good luck here as well.
