You’ve given me a lot of good advice here the last couple of years, I’m going to try to return the favor now…
What you’re describing reminds me of when I bought an Evenroll putter a few years back. They had glowing reviews, and I bought one, only because I was bored playing a Yes! Tracy for 10+ years. 🙄
Right away it felt off to me. I was making my normal stroke, yet almost every time my putt would come up short. Naturally I tried to hit them harder. That started a downward spiral of blowing them by the hole or pulling them. Then I got caught in between and started decelling.I was overthinking or trying to over correct something with every putt I looked at, and losing any sense of confidence I had of holing out. Once you lose that confidence with a putter, and the gremlins get in your head, you’re done.
It wasn’t very long before I realized it didn’t matter if it was me or the putter. It was a bad marriage, and there was no sense trying to make it work. Sometimes you’ve just got to know when it’s time to let go, my friend. There are plenty of other fish in the sea.

So I finally got back on a golf course Wednesday after 6 weeks and got to play a round with the DF2.1
First things first. I’ve been making a lot of comments about the Press 3.0 grip during practice sessions. I apparently get into a different zone while putting in a round of golf as opposed to just testing, because it wasn’t an issue at all while playing.
I expected some wtf moments on the greens after not playing for such a long time but that never happened. My distance control was really good, and I can’t think of any time the ball wasn’t going where I didn’t want. I was so successful with it that it’s hard for me to give the type review I wanted to, simply because I had only longish to very short putts today.
I’m not a guy who will hit a lot of irons and even wedges within 10 feet of the hole. I’m happy hitting a green. I did that pretty well today, and because the DF2.1 was so good with long putts, I had very few within a 5-12 foot range, which I think is a critical one for determining how well a putter performs for a golfer. We know we’re not going to make them all, but we should make some, and come close enough on the rest to be a bit ticked for missing them.
I hole putt out on every hole whether I’m in a money or friendly game, so I can say is not only was the DF money on long putts, but the shorties from 4’ and in were point and shoot.
Saturday I’ll be playing in my money game. We play a different format every week, but usually have a few hundred available in a skin pool. You can make some nice coin if you win a hole (or two), but as most of you know, in a skins game your putter needs to perform. You need to make birdies, pars and bogeys won’t get it done. The best thing I can say about the DF2.1 is if i didn’t think I could make money with it, I wouldn’t put it in play on Saturday, the MGS testing review would be put off for another day.
    It’s going in the bag.

I’ve got a tee time for Wednesday. It will be my first round of golf in 6 weeks, and my 3rd in about 10. My leg is feeling pretty close to 100% though, and I think a couple of Aleeve should get me through the day.
I’m going to hit balls for the first time since then tomorrow, and give the DF2.1 a workout before taking it on it’s maiden voyage. This grip is still annoying the hell outta me though… 🙄

Hi everyone, my name is John, I’m 67 years old and live in North Myrtle Beach, SC. I love golf, so I consider myself very fortunate to not only live in such a golf crazed part of the country, but to also live and be a member in Barefoot Resort&Golf, a community with 4 excellent courses. One of them (the Love) was featured on a season of The Big Break a few years ago, and another (The Dye) is the home of The Monday After The Masters, a celebrity Pro Am run by my club and Hootie and the Blowfish.
Like everyone else who has ever been selected as a tester here, I’m both incredibly grateful, and nervous about making sure I give this product, the site, my fellow Spies and most of all L.A.B. Golf a fair and honest review. I’m going to try and do my best with that, I only ask for your patience with the fact that I’m not very savvy with my computer skills. Posting pictures and imbedding files are things I’ll be learning on the fly here.
I’ve been dealing with a leg issue, and an episode of sciatica lately so I haven’t been able to play recently, but I’m sure a few of you have read about my escapades in the “How did you play?” thread. Normally I’m playing 3-4 times a week in both leagues and money games. I’ll also play a few local tournaments per year. My game has suffered a bit over the last year or so due to both injury and trying to find equipment (irons especially), and my handicap although beginning to trend down again, was as high as I can remember until just before this leg thing happened. The equipment issue came about when I decided it was time to move into Senior flex shafts throughout my bag. I’m still not sure I did the right thing at the right time, but whatever… let’s talk putting.
I used a Yes! Tracy for many years and finally switched to the wide blade models when Odyssey came out with one about 3 years ago. I’ve since tried the same style in a Ping Kushion 4.0, and just recently a White Hot OG. I’m a very confident putter, and consider it the clear strength of my game. That said, I can be very streaky. I think a good way to describe my putting is to tell you that when I play a scramble format with my usual 3 partners, I’m the shortest hitter and the highest cap. I’m the one who hits the “safe lay up” first so they can try the hero shot.  When we get on the green though, the roles are reversed and I’m the one who putts last, in the pressure spot.
As for the DF2.1 putter, I chose it over the Mezz because I wanted to step out of my comfort zone. I’ve never really played a mallet putter other than giving one a few rolls in a store or practice green. The DF2.1 story makes sense to me, and it’s the flagship putter for L.A.B., so I figured in for a dime, in for a dollar… go big or go home.
I placed my order on 5/20 after receiving the following specs 34” and 65* lie. I ordered the BGT Stability back shaft with the LH offset grip they offer and a custom sight line.
More to follow ( including pictures) soon!

I got out for a practice session this morning in between last night and now this afternoon’s rain. I hate to sound like a broken record, but as much as I like this putter, that’s how much I hate the Press 3 grip. It’s not a normal situation where I would’ve been able to switch it out either. The grip is designed so the shaft goes into it on an angle, which is unlike any other I’ve seen.
It’s not like I’m Monday Morning Quarterbacking here either. When I placed my order I asked in the comment box if they felt another grip might be better for me.

I played another 18 hole round with the DF2.1 today.  Same as the other day where we jumped out of the car and straight to the first tee box.  First hole I had about 30ft downhill.  No clue how fast the greens were and I hit it too firm.  Left a 10ft come back for par.  Drained it.  I had lots of 30ft putts all day long.  Just wasn’t hitting the ball very close.  Made one 30ft putt for birdie.  Only had one 3 putt on the day, which, for me, is historically a big issue.  Especially if I’m around 20-30ft for the birdie putt all day long.

I did miss about 4 putts inside of 8ft that I just over-read the break.  I just couldn’t seem to get the read down today.  But again, I know I hit my line, they just didn’t break.  My playing partners did admit that I’m putting night and day better with this DF2.1 than prior putters.

I think the biggest issue I’m having right now with this putter is the grip.
I know it sounds crazy because they’re so popular, but I never liked the wide Super Stroke style grips and that’s what this Press 3.0 reminds me of. It also has a weird feel to it. The word that comes to mind is wax-y. *probably not a word, but that’s how it feels. 🙄

I just went out to the green with the DF2.1 again. That last session left a bad taste in my mouth, and I needed to get rid of it.
For the first time since I received it, instead of worrying about stance, ball position, thumb pressure, yada yada, I just set up as I normally would, looked at my line and let it go.
It turned into the best session I’ve had yet with this thing. Who knows? Maybe it was a case of because it’s such a different look, and I knew nothing about this club I was overdoing things by searching every YouTube video review and tutorial done about it?
I’ve always felt I can putt well, and my putter was the biggest weapon in my bag, but for some reason I was getting out of my normal routine with this one. Tonight I found out I don’t need to change to make this club work well, and that’s a big step.
    To be continued….

One more thing here, and it’s not so much about the putter, but the fitting. They want us to review the online fitting process as much as the putter itself, so here goes… buckle up, because I’m not going to sugar coat anything. These putters aren’t cheap, and I like and respect the members here too much to do anything but be honest with all of them.
After sending in the video they requested there was a dead air period when just about every tester but myself got their specs. I decided to call and find out why. I was told the CEO wanted to do my fitting himself the following day, which blew me away. Fast forward to late afternoon that next day when I receive an email saying he wasn’t able to get to it, so a fellow named Jake did.
I was told 34” and 65* lie angle, and although he recommended I go Mezz, he said the DF2.1 would be fine also if that’s what I preferred. (uh…okay, but they’re kinda different though, no?) That was it, that was my fitting.
No explanation why my #’s were what they were, or anything about how they do what they do to arrive at them. I’d have loved to have them tell me why I was fit to that lie, how they thought it would affect my stroke, why what I was using was wrong, yada yada… not a thing though.
Same with advice on grips, shafts, and sight lines. It struck me strange that they gave us so much leeway to custom build a putter which we knew nothing about. It all seemed a little surreal to me… I just can’t imagine someone spending $900 for a putter based on “yeah, we got ya at 34”&65*, go to the cart build what ya like, buddy!”
A lot of other testers got calls and/or e-mails from Sam, I never did, nor have I heard from the person who fit me. At this point I don’t think it’s necessary. Back during the ordering phase it would’ve been nice though.
I think that’s about all there is to say about my online fitting. Would I buy a putter anywhere near this price point sight unseen based on this fitting process? I think you can guess my answer to that. Any questions, or comments, fire away….

Putter Tests are so difficult to begin with. They are highly subjective and i believe the one main club that looks can make a bigger on course impact for both better and worse.
Personally i don't think i would do another putter test... Even tho These have me super intrigued.
The fitting remember is part of this review and is something lab has asked the testers to make part of their grade for the putter and overall experience.

Yeah, it’s not that big a deal, obviously, and the only reason I brought him up was because I was told he wanted to do my fitting personally.
I really like the idea behind this putter. I want to make it work well enough to become my gamer, and it has a chance to do that. I just think we could’ve been given a lot more info from the company throughout the ordering and online fitting process, especially since they would only allow us to order online.
BTW  Sorry if I’m coming off too negative here, it’s not my intention, I’m just trying to be as honest as possible.

I just got back from a 40 minute session on the practice green. I remember reading something where Sam Hahn said he advised not using your old putter while trying to adjust to a new DF2.1, and I haven’t done that until today. In fact, I haven’t taken the headcover off my gamer in 5 weeks due to not being able to play during that period.
First 20 minutes or so I only rolled the DF, and while it wasn’t bad, it wasn’t really great either. I still feel like I have to hit this harder than my mind is telling me in order to reach the hole on any putt longer than 10’. That’s definitely not a plus. Then there is the setup issue. I’m not a “routine” putter, and I feel like every time I set up with the LAB I need to check my stance and grip. These things came naturally with any other putter I’ve bought.
Second 10 minutes I only used my White Hot OG DW, and my speed control came back immediately. Everything just felt simple again, not to mention the sound/feel of the WH is so much more pleasing.
I’d say the make-miss ratio was about the same with the two, however if I was testing side by side in a store, I’d have put down the DF2.1 and chosen the WH model right away, especially after comparing price. That’s not what this test is about though, so I spent the final 10 minutes alternating between the two. I’m going to give the DF2.1 the benefit of the doubt, and say it’s new, and I’ve been using a insert wide blade type putter for a while now. Maybe it’s not realistic to expect to be blown away right away? (I’m bending over backward here, because why would anyone buy a putter that doesn’t blow them away from the jump?)

Their online fitting process isn't really a true fitting process. Without them telling me how they do it, back when I was selling LAB putters, i was able to basically match their online fitting specs using the videos that customers send in and using an online compass. They ask you to take your own putter and record the video with something in the background that can be used as a reference straight line. I've used the online compass to use that reference straight line to measure the lie angle of what would make the sole sit flat. I've been pretty much spot on with what LAB comes back with or within one degree.

100% agree.  It was a very minimal online fitting process for sure.  I think I would’ve much rather fit in person.  Try out the three models, play around with lie angles, etc.
No need to apologize and I don’t think you stating the facts of your experience is at all negative.  It is what you experienced.  Nothing more, nothing less.
