Grand Stranded got a reaction from GolfSpy SAM in L.A.B. DF2.1 Putter
One more thing here, and it’s not so much about the putter, but the fitting. They want us to review the online fitting process as much as the putter itself, so here goes… buckle up, because I’m not going to sugar coat anything. These putters aren’t cheap, and I like and respect the members here too much to do anything but be honest with all of them.
After sending in the video they requested there was a dead air period when just about every tester but myself got their specs. I decided to call and find out why. I was told the CEO wanted to do my fitting himself the following day, which blew me away. Fast forward to late afternoon that next day when I receive an email saying he wasn’t able to get to it, so a fellow named Jake did.
I was told 34” and 65* lie angle, and although he recommended I go Mezz, he said the DF2.1 would be fine also if that’s what I preferred. (uh…okay, but they’re kinda different though, no?) That was it, that was my fitting.
No explanation why my #’s were what they were, or anything about how they do what they do to arrive at them. I’d have loved to have them tell me why I was fit to that lie, how they thought it would affect my stroke, why what I was using was wrong, yada yada… not a thing though.
Same with advice on grips, shafts, and sight lines. It struck me strange that they gave us so much leeway to custom build a putter which we knew nothing about. It all seemed a little surreal to me… I just can’t imagine someone spending $900 for a putter based on “yeah, we got ya at 34”&65*, go to the cart build what ya like, buddy!”
A lot of other testers got calls and/or e-mails from Sam, I never did, nor have I heard from the person who fit me. At this point I don’t think it’s necessary. Back during the ordering phase it would’ve been nice though.
I think that’s about all there is to say about my online fitting. Would I buy a putter anywhere near this price point sight unseen based on this fitting process? I think you can guess my answer to that. Any questions, or comments, fire away….

I said earlier how shocked I was by the size of the HC when I took mine out of the box. Same thing when I saw the putter head itself for the first time seconds later. As soon as I rolled a few balls on a carpet though, I was over it.
My biggest concern was how it would perform on putts up against a collar, or from well off the green, but in the limited testing I’ve been able to do it’s been fine. So I guess my answer right now would be my transition has been smooth, but keep in mind, I’ve only “practiced” with it so far…. Let’s wait and see how it performs when things matter.

Taking that thing out of the bow, and seeing the size of that headcover…. I wouldn’t believe anyone who said they didn’t react exactly like you and I did. It’s beyond big, lol.
Surprisingly though, it fits in the bag between my 54&58* wedges better than my white hot OG wide blade does. Go figure?

I just got back from the practice putting green that sits beside our starter shack. In the morning there’s a line of carts filled with golfers about to tee off on one of the 3 courses nearby, and the green area is full of players warming up.
I saw a few guys I know, and to say the DF2.1 piqued their interest would be putting things mildly. A lot of eyebrows were raised, but almost everyone who tried it said they got over the look really quickly, and most liked it’s performance. ( keep in mind, I’m a lefty, and these were RH golfers).
As for my thoughts, I haven’t had any issues at all with the way it plays, but I haven’t seen any immediate breakthroughs either. I haven’t been able to play for over a month now, and I was happy to roll this as well as I did. The real test with any club comes on the course though. I won’t really know about this putter until I’ve stood over a few 4-5 footers I need to make, and a few 30+ feet putts I want to get down in two from.
One thing I was worried about was putting with such a big head from off the green (we have so many tightly shaved lies this is really important where I play) and I’m happy to say the DF excelled there.
To sum things up for today, I’m enjoying this thing more than I thought I would. I’ve bought into the tech they’re preaching about, the idea of a simple, easy to repeat setup, taking care with my alignment and then letting that tech do the rest is appealing.

So… my DF2.1 arrived just a few minutes ago!
First impression taking it out of the box? I’m not going to lie, when I pulled it out and saw the head cover, I was like “what the…” this didn’t change when I took the cover off, 😂. I’ve read up on this putter, and knew it was going to be big, but I’ll be honest, I was taken aback by how big it actually is.
Okay, so naturally, the first thing I did was grab a few balls and roll a few on my living room carpet. First two came up a short, but then the distance was fine. I like the way the putter is designed to promote a forward Peres, and I’m not anticipating any problems adjusting to that.
What surprised me though was the feel (sound) off the putter. I expected a heavy thud type sound, but instead, it feels “tinky” (if that’s a word, lol.) I’m not sure if that’s something I’m going to like, we’ll see. I love the soft feel off my odyssey white hot OG, and this seems really different. If you look at the irons in my sig, you’ll see that looks aren’t a deal breaker for me when it comes to golf clubs. If something works, it’s in my bag.
I live right off the green of a par 4, and it’s got a pretty fast, sloping green. The course is still being played right now, but I plan on getting out there later tonight and seeing what’s what with the DF2.1. I’ll be back with more updates after that.😉

Here’s how excited I was to start rolling this putter… I’ve hit about a 100 putts on my carpet with it in the past hour, then came to leave a post here. After I did, I started to catch up on the thread and saw this photo with the label on the face of the putter. I had to go get mine out of my bag and look, because I didn’t notice one on mine. 🤔
Sure enough, there it was! This could mean either one of two things… I’m either laser focused when putting, or I’m just not very observant. I’m hoping it’s the former. 🙄
btw @edingc I’m so happy I went with the BGT tour stability black shaft. It looks and feels great, and I love how understated the graphics are. It really looks so much better than it did in the photos I’ve seen.
Also, choosing a custom sight line was something I really worried about screwing up. Apparently I should be a club designer, because not only does the shaft look great, but I love the 3 dot and horizontal line I chose. If there’s one thing I’m not feeling cosmetically with this putter it’s the half white portion of the grip. I don’t see that aging well, and I would’ve loved an all black one to keep the murdered out theme going.

After reading a few comments from Sam Hahn, the L.A.B. CEO, I’m going to go about this test differently then I originally intended to.
There is a pretty big thread on WRX from back when they tested the DF2.1, and Sam was a frequent contributor to it. He suggested not doing a head to head comp against your current putter, as the setup and stroke with the DF needed to be different from that of a “normal” putter.
I’ll admit to feeling some trepidation when I saw that, because as I stated in my intro, I’m very comfortable with my putting, and have been for a long time. I’m willing to give this a thing a fair shake, but I don’t want to have to completely change my approach either, if that makes sense?
I like to read your comments on golf and equipment, and appreciate the time you’ve taken to both answer my questions and offer advice to me over the last couple of years. I noticed your comments about the DF2.1, and I’ll admit they concerned me. If I had spent out of pocket what this putter retails for, I’d expect to see improvement rather quickly, or what’s the point? How much improvement is hard to quantify, but I’ll go with a comment made during a Congressional hearing years ago when talking about regulating the porn industry online. The speaker was asked to define porn. His reply was “I can’t define it, but I know it when I see it.”
As helpful as you’ve been to me, I’ll now try to return the favor here. We’re expecting a lot of feedback and help from both Mr. Hahn and I’d assume others at LAB. Whatever I hear from them or notice on my own, I’ll be happy to share. Any questions or advice you might have, please ask, and share.
I’d love it if you took a more active role (same with @edingc) here sharing your thoughts on the 2.1 with us. The more the merrier, as they say.

Hi everyone, my name is John, I’m 67 years old and live in North Myrtle Beach, SC. I love golf, so I consider myself very fortunate to not only live in such a golf crazed part of the country, but to also live and be a member in Barefoot Resort&Golf, a community with 4 excellent courses. One of them (the Love) was featured on a season of The Big Break a few years ago, and another (The Dye) is the home of The Monday After The Masters, a celebrity Pro Am run by my club and Hootie and the Blowfish.
Like everyone else who has ever been selected as a tester here, I’m both incredibly grateful, and nervous about making sure I give this product, the site, my fellow Spies and most of all L.A.B. Golf a fair and honest review. I’m going to try and do my best with that, I only ask for your patience with the fact that I’m not very savvy with my computer skills. Posting pictures and imbedding files are things I’ll be learning on the fly here.
I’ve been dealing with a leg issue, and an episode of sciatica lately so I haven’t been able to play recently, but I’m sure a few of you have read about my escapades in the “How did you play?” thread. Normally I’m playing 3-4 times a week in both leagues and money games. I’ll also play a few local tournaments per year. My game has suffered a bit over the last year or so due to both injury and trying to find equipment (irons especially), and my handicap although beginning to trend down again, was as high as I can remember until just before this leg thing happened. The equipment issue came about when I decided it was time to move into Senior flex shafts throughout my bag. I’m still not sure I did the right thing at the right time, but whatever… let’s talk putting.
I used a Yes! Tracy for many years and finally switched to the wide blade models when Odyssey came out with one about 3 years ago. I’ve since tried the same style in a Ping Kushion 4.0, and just recently a White Hot OG. I’m a very confident putter, and consider it the clear strength of my game. That said, I can be very streaky. I think a good way to describe my putting is to tell you that when I play a scramble format with my usual 3 partners, I’m the shortest hitter and the highest cap. I’m the one who hits the “safe lay up” first so they can try the hero shot.  When we get on the green though, the roles are reversed and I’m the one who putts last, in the pressure spot.
As for the DF2.1 putter, I chose it over the Mezz because I wanted to step out of my comfort zone. I’ve never really played a mallet putter other than giving one a few rolls in a store or practice green. The DF2.1 story makes sense to me, and it’s the flagship putter for L.A.B., so I figured in for a dime, in for a dollar… go big or go home.
I placed my order on 5/20 after receiving the following specs 34” and 65* lie. I ordered the BGT Stability back shaft with the LH offset grip they offer and a custom sight line.
More to follow ( including pictures) soon!

I, too, wasn't CRAZY about the 1/2 and 1/2 putter grip, but I've come to find it helps my eyes just easily find the middle - a simple white line probably would've been the same-ish, but I'm loving how it (along with the lie-angle as previously discussed) really promotes a consistent set-up every time.  Isn't the three-dots AWESOME?  I didn't do the horizontal white line, but I really love the simplicity of the three dots.
I got the Accra shaft, and feel the same way about just how good it feels, and there's a sandpapery texture to it that I find oddly soothing - I wasn't expecting any texture at all, honestly, and I really enjoy it.
Have fun with the new toy, and can't wait for you to get it out on the greens!

I love how my putter feels. The black/white color scheme is new. Mine is almost all black with only white lettering and line.
All I can say is the DF is a weapon. Enjoy!
