  1. Right now I still have my Mavrik with the VA Composites Drago that I got fitted for at True Spec about 4 years ago. My intention is to go for a driver fitting soon to see if anything can beat what I have, but if not it's no biggie.
  2. This is a fun topic, I'll bite. For some reason I'm just not as sensitive to slow play as so many others seem to be. I am actually much more annoyed by the opposite. You're playing at a perfectly acceptable pace but getting pushed by a group whose only goal seems to be to play as fast as they possibly can. This often happens at a local private club where I am fortunate to be a frequent guest. Of course I'd prefer we move over and just let them go through, but as a guest I don't really feel like it's my call. My other pet peeve is this new 21st century phenomenon of music on the course. It's not because I don't love music (quite the opposite actually) but one of the reasons I fell in love with the game as a kid is that the golf course is just a nice place to be, just as it is. When did we get so desperate for constant, continuous stimulation and entertainment that we can't allow ourselves to enjoy the unique atmosphere of serenity that the golf course can provide?
  3. Been relatively stable this year. Ball: Played the Bridgestone BXS (Tiger ball) all year Driver: Still playing my Mavrik with custom-fitted shaft by VA Composites Woods & Hybrids: No change. Still playing old Callaway 3-wood and hybrids Irons: Same brand. Upgraded Sub-70 639CB to the new 659CB Wedges: Made one change. Removed the Sub-70 lob wedge and put in a Vokey (I love Sub-70 but Vokey has way more options for bounce and grind) Putter: No change. Still using the Rossie OG S
  4. Loving the B-XS right now. I wholeheartedly agree with the standard MGS position that "feel shouldn't take priority over performance" and I'd like to think I would always choose the better performing piece of equipment over the better feeling one. However, as long as performance IS equal or better, which I think it is, I love the muted sound and the soft feel of the B-XS as opposed to the more clicky sound and harsher feel of the ProV. The short game control is fantastic.
  5. Has anyone really tested the Bridgestone B-XS (the so-called "Tiger ball") directly against the B-RXS? I am a near-scratch player but have a driver clubhead speed in the high 90's which of course is relatively slow compared to many of my peers. I have been playing the Tiger ball and loving it. MGS released a video a while back saying the Tiger ball is one of the longest balls for mid swing speed players. However, that runs counter to Bridgestone's marketing which says I should be playing the RXS. I got hold of a box of the RXS and have played a couple rounds with them. I certainly cannot tell an enormous difference. It's difficult to explain, but the flight off the driver looks a little different with the RXS and it might be possible that I'm hitting the irons just a shade longer with that ball. However, this is purely anecdotal and I have no real data. I have not yet done serious testing of the two balls side-by-side. I live in the Myrtle Beach area so it's tough to get out onto an empty golf course and do ball testing this time of year. Has anyone who has a mid swing speed done any serious testing of these two balls side-by-side? If so, what have you found? Thanks!!!
  6. My favorite story has to do with competition. Not a funny story but something I look back on very fondly and will never forget. It's 1990. I'm 17 and I make it to the semifinals of the Club Championship. I am a HUGE underdog to one of the best players at the Club who had won the CC before. Long story short, I play well and I catch him on a bad day. By the time we get to the back nine, word gets back to the clubhouse that I'm winning. When we get to 16 green all of a sudden there's a ring of people around the green watching. I was never so nervous in my life! He wins 17 to go 1 down, but I end up hitting a super-clutch 5-iron into the last green to seal the win. He shakes my hand, gets in his car, and burns rubber out of the parking lot. When I go into the clubhouse everyone pats me on the back and congratulates me. Turns out he was in the bar the night before telling everyone how he was going to kick my ass, so they all loved it that I managed to pull the upset. Of course in the final the next day I was emotionally spent and I laid an egg, but that's ok haha...I'll always remember that day.
  7. If we're counting Callaway and Odyssey as one brand, then I'm at two. Callaway driver, 3-wood, hybrids and (Odyssey) putter. Sub-70 irons and wedges.
  8. Really a great and interesting topic. I voted "better in competition" but it's close. The real answer is "both". There are times when I find I can get into a heightened state of focus and awareness that I can only get into when in competition. It is those times when I can play closer to my potential. I can never get into that state in casual rounds or even money games with my buddies. However, there are other times in competition when I cannot find that focus. The anxiety over getting a good result takes over, and I go into the crapper. To put it simply...I choke. I do not seem to be able to control which version of me shows up. Obviously I wish I could...
  9. Thanks for much for the reply. That is most helpful and makes me feel better about possibly trying those irons!
  10. Greetings all. I've been wondering about something and it occurred to me that this forum might be a good place to get an answer. I'm a decent player with a handicap that ranges from about 0 to 3. However, I do struggle somewhat with iron play relative to my peers at that ability level. I'm thinking about ditching my forged cavity-backs and going game-improvement. I have my eye on a couple different sets but one of the contenders is a combo set consisting of Titleist T-300 longer irons and T-200 short irons. My questions are: has anyone played the T-200 irons, and, if so, have you had any distance control issues with the short irons? I'm asking because I have played irons with hollow bodied construction before (Genesis by Miura). I loved the increase in speed and distance, but I got rid of them because I would occasionally get these huge jumpers with the short irons where the ball would sail clear over the green. I got to a point to where I felt like I couldn't trust them. I'm wondering if Titleist has figured out a way to eliminate that. Thanks!
  11. How long have you been playing golf? What’s your handicap or normal score? Been playing since I was about 11. I am near scratch. HCP is usually between 0 and 2. What do you love about golf? So hard to answer that with any brevity. Golf is such a huge part of who I am. I love to compete. I love the feeling of accomplishment that comes from working on the game, seeing improvement, then successfully putting it into play in a competitive setting. I love the solitary nature of it. All the credit and all the blame only to yourself. What brings you to MyGolfSpy? Do you already know any other Spies? I got hooked by the recent golf ball analysis. The folks who run this deal really seem to know their stuff. Where are you from? What is your home course? Originally from MA but have been living in the Myrtle Beach area most of my adult life. Like most Myrtle Beach residents, I don't really have one home course. I'm either playing in tournaments or at any number of different places with my buddies. What are the best and worst things about golf in your region? Certainly the year-round golf season is great. I guess I miss the atmosphere of the muni where I grew up. The mission of the golf course was to serve the local community. By contrast, here in Myrtle Beach it's just all about making money off the tourists. Nothing really wrong with that I guess, but it lacks that sense of community that I grew up with. What do you do for a living? Software support and implementation for GolfNow How’d you pick your user name? College nickname due to my initials: PP.
