  1. I'm going to chime in again on this... I would say yes, launch monitors are well worth it. As long as you set your budget and expectations according to what you want and will use it for. No real point in buying a GC Quad just to carry to the range every couple of months to get, and keep track of, rough yardages. All you really need is an entry level unit for that. If you have space at home for a set up that you can use frequently then the the extra investment in a Mevo+, Skytrak etc over the basic units is well worth it, if your budget allows of course. The extra capability will encourage you to use it more too.
  2. Has anyone else noticed problems wih the 'updated' maps on the Garmin Golf App? On my home course 2 very large water hazards are just not showing. They still appear on the watch display, but not on the new style shot tracker maps. I suspect that they will be missing from the R10 maps too. I have reported it on the 'course update' website thingy. (I have also posted this on the MGS User Group -Garmin forum(

  4. PersonalIy would think in-person would be the best way to start your journey with a teaching pro. After a couple of lessons then maybe a hybrid approach would be worth trying. Going remote could be a convenient way to help keep you on track more frequently than would otherwise be practical.
  5. I don't really like the term 'colorways' personally. I much prefer something like 'combinations', 'styles' or 'options', but whatever; in the grand scheme of things it doesn't really matter. But, as a Brit, whatever phrase they use the missing 'u' grates a bit.
  6. Rule 18.3b In summary.... The player must announce or make it clear that a provisional ball is being played. If not then the second ball is the ball in play for Stroke and Distance penalty (3 off the tee).
  7. I have the Decathlon/Inesis Waterproof stand bag. Excellent value, 14 way dividers. Not big on pocket space compared to some, but certainly adequate. I plan to replace it with anther the same when I need to
  8. I have never heard of them before, but they look ok in the pictures. If you have realistic expectations, based on the price you actually pay then it could be worth a try.
  9. Pretty much this ^^ I think. It's not a bad way to get half decent balls at ok prices, especially if you don't know what is actually best for you to use. Also image/ego. 'I play Pro V1s' sounds much better than 'I use budget distance balls'. As for me... I don't buy refurb/lake balls anymore, and I can't justify top prices. So I currently use the Kirkland, and considering the Inesis 900.
  10. My Lob Wedge... Progen 60 deg. Had it in my bag since 2007 (or maybe 2006). I'm considering changing it, but it works and it never had heavy use. I sharpen the grooves every so often too.
  11. I would say yes, they are worth it. If you accept that ranges balls won't give the same numbers as your gamer, they will still give you some numbers, so you can gauge your consitency etc much better than just eyeballing it. Even the 'distance only ones' such as PRGR, SC 200/300, original Mevo etc can help make range practice more meaningful. Even with a cheap one, you can do randomized distance practice by getting a random number generator app on your phone, or use some playing cards or dice I'm lucky, I do have space outdoors for a Skytrak and net at home (but only just), and my game has improved as a result.

  13. I would say the S62 was probably a better purchase, especially if you use it as your normal watch as I do. If you only use it for golf then (depending on price difference) probably still better, but by a lesser margin. In my experience the sensors make no noticeable difference to watch battery life. The sensors have their own replaceable batteries, that they claim can last upto 4 years iirc.
  14. The S60 is nowhere near that good on battery life, maybe good for two rounds on the same day, but I wouldn't want to rely on it.
  15. My home course has several bells. They work quite well as long as players remember to ring them, which the vast majority do, but it's very easy to forget when your ball is the opposite side of the fairway and your focus is on finding your ball. It an be difficult to hear them if it's windy though.
  16. Yes I am happy with them. They perform as I expected they would. I don't set the pin positions etc so don't get optimum putting data, but that is my fault. I had a single Arccos sensor that came with my Cobra driver (3 years ago now), and it just drained my phone battery far too quickly as the app needed to be running all the time. Beyond that I have no experience of anything other than CT10, dedicated phone apps, and the Tom Tom I used before I got my S60.
  17. I struggled with Driver so I currently carry two '3' woods... Originally both identical (Cobra King F7, with the same shafts too). One is set to 16 deg with the weight in the back position. The other set to 13 deg with the weight forward and an inch added to length. I guess I effectively made a 'mini driver', I'm more consistent direction wise off the tee and get it just as far more often. I usually hit it a similar distance to my driver using pals.
  18. Fair enough... and for most of us that is probably true. But having two putters with different characteristics is not radically different to carrying two wedges with different bounces. They are similar, but different clubs for different circumstances.
  19. Why not carry 2 (or more) putters if it works for you? One for delicate short putts, one for longer putts or off the fringe. I only carry one and don't feel the need for a second. But one of my regular playing pals could possibly benefit from carrying two, he loves his lightweight putter, but struggles on longer putts with it, and he has space in his bag for an extra one.
  20. Excellent question. You could argue that Driver and Putter are 'speciality' clubs. The Driver almost exclusively for hitting the ball off the tee and putter for rolling it along the ground. I don't have any clubs that I would consider speciality clubs (and I don't currently carry a Driver). It's not unknown for me to not need to use certain clubs on a round, but the next time, on the same course, I may use them several times.
  21. We can all have 'one of those days' when you just don't hit certain clubs well, so you use safer options if you can. That, I think, is good idea and attitude, especially when learning or playing practice/casual rounds when your score doesn't matter. If/when you do play more 'serious' rounds then you will be able to use that experience to pick the best option for the situation.
  22. I'm no expert, but it sounds like the member of staff that helped you was more of a salesman than a fitter. When I got fitted for my clubs i went to two places, first was a retail chain, where the 'fitter' seemed to be steering me towards what they had in stock, so I walked away. The second was a specialist independent fitter, who evaluated my shaft requirements then tried multiple heads to see what worked best... and his price was the same as the chain store would have been. Incidentally, I realky like Mizuno, and I wanted them, buy every time I tried them they just didn't work for me, they just seem a bit heavy for me, which sounds similar to your experience, so it is well worth trying different brands and models if you can (I ended up with Cobra). So I think he would benefit from a session with a good, brand agnostic, fitter if you can, either an independent fitter or a good club pro.
  23. I had hoped the WHS would not need to have any gender distinctions, but unfortunately that's not the case. And I still don't fully grasp why my index would need to be any different if I were female, but played identically to how I do now. Irrespective of who hits it further, if a lady scores the same, from the same tees as a man, why should her index need to be any different to his? I am obviously 'missing something', but I would have thought that the different slope ratings for different tees could account for that. Presumably the average differences between male and female are more pronounced than I realised.
  24. May as well kick this thread off... I've been using an S60 watch for about 2 1/2 years, and added a full set of CT10 sensors earlier this year. No major problems so far, apart from 'user error'. Quite a few short chips and occasional 'tap in' putts not detected, but I gather that is a pretty universal issue with club sensors generally. I did have a case where the watch battery went from 100% to dead over the space of a few hours, but a simple re-start fixed it. What I think is needed are... A 'Pin Tag' function to register the hole position. A way to indicate 'tap out' shots etc in the app, that ignores them for distance average calculations. Increased 'sensitivity' for shots within say 5 or 10 yards of the green, to pick up the delicate chips. The putter sensor does it, so why not have it 'kick in' automatcally on other clubs when close to the green? A manual 'shot input' on the watch would be nice too, but that does sort of 'step on the toes' of the sensors a bit so I can't see that hapoening
  25. I'm using the Kirkland, currently v1 as the v2 hasn't appeared in my local (UK) store yet. I was going to go with the Inesis 900, but on comparing them on Skytrak and on course they are both performing about the same for me, with a slight distance and spin edge towards the Kirkland, and its a lot cheaper too.
