The short version of this is I am a believer in fittings. But just as with everything the people you work with make a difference.  I want to get a new driver and look at putters, but I hesitate to just buy something off the shelf because I have seen what a difference the right shaft can make.  Best of luck to you.

I just had an iron fitting yesterday at Mulligan's in the Richmond VA area.  I have been playing MP 57s for about 13-14 years.  I was looking at the new MP 20 lineup. We started with the Mizuno optimizer, which recommended a couple shafts over the one I am currently gaming.  We tried the MP 20 MMC first and then the MP 20.  After trying about a half dozen shafts, we were able to identify a shaft that had a nice tighter dispersion pattern that felt really good.  We were outside, so it was nice to see the flight on both good and poor strikes.  The ability to try different length shafts was cool, as we identified that my current shaft length caused a compensation that results in a pull shot miss. We repeated the process on my Hybrid.  As as result, I ordered a new set of MP 20s and a new Titleist hybrid.  It was an excellent experience and we even checked out a few tweaks on my driver setting and tested a few wedge options.

I recommend finding a local green grass retail shop to support you local golf market.  🙂

  2. I went for a club fitting (my irons are 14 years old) yesterday, the Trackman readings showed me losing 20 MPH of ball speed vs. expected ball speed using swing speed, smash factor, etc.  We are going to retest it in a couple weeks and try it against one of the test heads.    I'll report back then.

  3. I had the face crack on a G400 LST.  I "luvvvvved" that driver.  Ping replaced it with a new G410 LST (great customer service!).  I am still trying to get it dialed in, but it looks promising.  The distance seems comparable or even a little better at times, but I feel like I have to swing more aggressive to get the results that I was getting from my G400 LST.  I feel like the MOI is lower, as I hit this head higher, but that could just be in my head.  LOL  It is probably all about confidence.

I actually learned about the tour length by accident.

Was hitting F9 from a demo cart. Put in the 63g Hazardous yellow. Then after hitting so well, put it side by side with an M6. Seeing how much longer the M6 was, I thought maybe I had put a 3-wood shaft in the F9 driver head by mistake.

Spoke to the Cobra specialist in-store and he said "oh yeah, that's a Tour Length shaft". Since then found it in the catalog. Noticed this week it is also called out on their web site.

Seeing the discussion above, I have created some franken-sticks through chopping and adding back.  Have never been thrilled with any of them.  But getting one new with the right length and weight has been great.  Just wish more mfrs put shorter options in the demo carts for fitting at the major retailers accessible to the masses.  I would be very surprised if TXG, Club Champion or Tru Spec did not have these shorter shafts as an option, but maybe I'll ask.

I switched to 44.5" last spring and picked up distance and tighter dispersion.

My trade is strength and conditioning, mainly for athletes but I also work with kids and adults. I recently finished a certification in Golf Fitness that I’m start to apply in my own workouts and seeing some great results.

Hi,  at 57 with three boys under the age of 6, I am all in on strength and conditioning for golf and life.  Did you do the TPI Certification?  I am working to get my trainer to get certified.  I was in an accident a couple years ago that knocked my L4-L5 out of wack, so we do a 30 minute stretching routine after workouts to help maintain mobility, etc.

It's funny how Virginians divide Virginia.  To those of us in southwest Virginia,  central Virginia is Charlottesville, Lynchburg, Appomattox.  Piankatank would be eastern Virginia or maybe even Tidewater.  Most Virginian's in the east and north divide the state north and south.  Everyone in SWVA divides the state east and west.  It's almost like two different states.

Anyway, played Piankatank a couple times with the local high school leading into the VHSL state tournament.  I believe it was 2006 and 2010.  It was a 5-1/2 hour drive to get there and a little more than 350 miles.  We did win the team state championship there in 2010.

Hey Sixcat,  RE: VA Areas:  LOL   So true.  I lived in Appomattox for a couple years, so I understand the sentiment.  Hit them well!

  7. Hi Everyone,

I play in a group that gets the opportunity to play multiple courses in and around Central Virginia.  It might be cool to post course condition updates to share with each other.

IE:  Piankatank River Golf Club  Hartfield VA

    Played 5-7-2020

Course is in good condition.  Fairways aren't all the way in yet due to cool temps and extra rain.  Greens are healthy but were slower (6-8 estimated stimp).  Staff is super friendly and helpful, especially in light of the current Covid Conditions.  Range grass is in good shape.  The putting practice green is healthy, just a little "shaggy" (I guess they are keeping it long due to the cool nights and extra rain).

Food was available for take out orders.

If you are in the area, I recommend playing Piankatank.

Virginia is open for play with restrictions.  But participation is down dramatically.

Most of the courses in Central VA are open.  Some of the courses in Northern VA are closed....go figure?

I am a member at Viniterra and it has been packed 7 days a week since this started.  They do a great job of having wipes, etc. available and order out food and adhering to the governor's directives.  I'm just glad courses are open.

The quality is equal to Pro V1, and I switched from Pro V1X to the XS. It’s the only ball I have tried that I haven’t gone back to Titleist. I liked Snell, but Bridgestone will have better quality control and the cover seems to hold up better, but I’ve only played a dozen Snell.

I’ll give them a try and compare. Thanks.

  10. Piankatank River Golf Club

Hi, I played Piankatank on May 7, 2020 and really enjoy the course.  Even with the Covid restrictions, the staff was kind and helpful.  The driving range has plenty room and the putting practice green is uniquely designed with layers and lots of putting options.  The practice green was a little "shaggy" but very healthy.  It is also very easily accessible which is very nice.

The course opens with a uniquely shaped dogleg left par 4.  Six of the holes have potential water hazards in play.  The greens are smaller and were playing fairly slow.  The front nine require shot making over "grip it and rip it" distance.  The fairways were in decent condition for this time of year and the amount of rain we have had in this area.  Number 9 has a tree in the middle of the fairway, but can be reached in two if you hit a good drive.  The green is small with a hill to the right and bunkers on the left, so you have to hit a good approach to score.

The back nine feature five water hazard holes.  Overall the back is a more straight forward, with plenty of risk reward opportunities.  Number 14, a par three, has a wonderful view of the Piankatank River behind the green. Number 18 is quite the finishing hole.  It looks straight ahead, but the green presents a number of challenges for the approach shot.  A par feels really good..LOL

Overall the course was nice and I really enjoyed the challenge of playing the smaller greens in the wind.

    Hope you enjoyed...happy golfing!

  11. Bionic Stable Grip 3X.  I have larger hands and the Bionic seems to help me keep a "looser" grip and they are durable.  I have been using them for over 10 years.

Any tips for summer play?  I found a dry hand application, Clark Dry Grip, that really helps keep my hands (and glove) dry.  Yes, I sweat a lot, LOL.  I also use a large carabiner clip on the cart to hang a glove and switch between holes if it is a hot and humid day to help keep my gloves dry.

Yes and yes - there’s a noticeable difference - I greatly preferred the sound of the G400 and if sound is different then feel will be different.

Having written that I find the 410 far more forgiving and it’s been nearly a year since I switched so I’ve gotten used to the sound. Each won the MGS Most Wanted Driver as did the G30 a number of years back so clearly Ping knows what it’s doing.

Thanks!  I am slowly getting used to it.  Ping's drivers are really good.  What shaft are you using?  I am currently gaming a Tour AD DI 6x as that is what I was using in the G400.

Viniterra is a fun course - or at least I think it is, I've played there twice in the last couple months and it was a dreary wet day both times. Can't wait to go back soon

I really like it.  It plays longer than the card due to slope and little roll out.  The greens are in good condition now.  Just waiting for some warm weather to get the fairways lush.  Let me know, and maybe you can play with me as a guest some time.

  14. I have been using a Whitlam Joseph Flag Series SS303 for the past 10 years.  Has anyone used Whitlam putters and moved to Scotty Cameron and if so what did you like or dislike?  Same question with Evnroll.  Thanks!!

  15. I play Snell MTB Black.  They feel great off the driver, they don't over spin on my iron shots and I really like how they feel off the putter.  If I am playing a Captain's Choice, I will use the MTB X for a few more yards, more shot shaping with irons, I just have to be aware of spin on the greens.

  16. I have my driver set at 7.5 degrees, so I have to have an ascending swing.  I just put a little extra weight on my back leg and really focus on a relaxed swing through the ball with a 7am contact point to help with a small draw.  If I start in out to in path, I will hit a session using a small taped box sitting just outside my intended path.

If I start hitting down, I will press my left (lead) hip a little forward to help my head stay behind the ball.  Of course, everyone has their own swing "DNA".

Does anyone else have this challenge?  When I am really striking my irons really well, I become susceptible to a hook with my driver.
