  1. I don't mind slow play and I feel like it's over-stated here. I'll go with the two polar opposite guys in my group. I hate an overly positive "nice shot, good putt" guy every time someone hits. Some compliments and encouragement are great, but don't blow smoke when I chunked it 20 yards short Also probably hate the angry, self deprecating guy even more. I definitely used to be that guy, but I've since realized how hard golf really is. I've seen some crazy stuff people do when they're mad on the golf course. It's just pointless and annoying for everyone else.
  2. So about two years ago I happened upon a Wilson Staff FG-17 Tour Blade 1 Iron at a local Goodwill. The more I look at it sitting in my bag of spare clubs (because I sure can't hit it) I wonder what else might be out there just sitting in garage sales and thrift stores. Please feel free to share pictures and stories of the coolest/most interesting equipment you've ever stumbled across! Sorry if this is a repetitive topic, but I did not find one in recent archives! Pictures shown are comparison of the 1 iron and my gamer Apex 5 iron for reference.
  3. Pretty much in line with most other people here. In order I'd say: 1. Value: Is it worth the cost? Cheap course, cheap layout/conditions? Way over-priced? Value is going to be relative. If I'm paying $200 it better have pristine conditions and a good setup. I've played some incredible value $30 and $40 courses around where I live. 2. Challenge Level: I say level because challenging for me might not be challenging for a + handicap. Can I navigate the course and potentially score well with my skill level while also making me think and play well in order to do so? 3. Variety: I struggle with this as a longer hitter. Does it challenge every club in my bag? Forced carries off the tee, doglegs and hazards that required considerations to layup or go for it, decent but fair undulations on the greens, etc. I don't want to play a course that's nothing but hard dog legs or only straight, short par 4's. Too many courses I can barely take my driver out and then others every par 4 & 5 are driver holes.
  4. I think you're right. There just seem to be more good, knowledgable fitters out there now, and golfers have a better idea of what they're looking for vs blindly trusting juiced distances on a launch monitor.
  5. This is pretty much what I did with my F9 now. Difference is I went in blind on shaft just knowing I needed something heavy S or an X flex. Knowing what I know now I would have researched more on that, but the combo has worked well so far. I will absolutely roll with the previous generation or two as well when I do pull the trigger. I just need to test out some head/shaft combos to know what works well and what doesn't. I went the same gently used route on my current irons and that's been the best investment I've made in my bag so far. Respect for gaming a SLDR though. I'm sure the forgiveness was a welcome sight!
  6. This is what I'd love to do, but not just with brand new models. My driver is in great shape, but I wish I could find a fitter that had a model or two prior clubs to compare against my own in a fitting. They always either push or only carry the "latest and greatest"
  7. This is a great point actually. Seems OEMs are finally pushing the forgiveness capabilities rather than pure distance. Significant improvement on miss-hits (without giving up too much distance) might be the one thing that would convert me.
  8. So I've had my Cobra F9 in the bag since early 2020. Loved it from the start and I still see some really good performance with some loft and weight placement changes as my swing has improved. I don't really plan to or feel the need to upgrade anytime soon. But this begs the question of when does driver technology actually result in an appreciable difference for an average golfer? I know getting fitted is king, but is 5 yards longer or 10 yards tighter dispersion over 5 years worth the $600 price tag? Not to mention the extra $150+ for a premium shaft fit (ahem velocore). Any testing out there that shows driver data over a 5 year span? F9 vs Darkspeed, M5 vs QI10, Epic Flash vs Paradym Smoke... etc. I feel like 5 years might be that grey area where it might be worth it, or it might not. All opinions or references to testing welcome.
  9. I took my 3 wood out of the bag last year and it gave me room to add a 4 hybrid and crank it down to a 3.5 of sorts. The gap between that and my 5 wood is about 10 yards. Long distance, high handicap player... I needed gapping, not top of the bag distance. Personally I love this setup. Gives me the right club every time from 220-250 and it depends on what flight I'm looking for between the two off the tee. Unconventional, but a different perspective from an oddball of the group.
  10. I recently bought a Cobra F9 with a TS black 7x (which I love). This came as an aftermarket shaft option with no upcharge. What is the difference in materials of the “stock” aftermarket shafts that some companies offer versus buying the true aftermarket shaft separate from the club purchase?
  11. Nice setup! How are the z 785 irons? I’ve been looking at upgrading to a little more player’s style iron from my m1’s to gain a little more consistency... but I’m not ready to give up every ounce of forgiveness yet. Been looking at the 785s and 585s.

  13. How long have you been playing golf? What’s your handicap or normal score? I played golf off and on as a kid and got more into it once I started college. I only went 5-10 times a year even then because of my commitment to playing baseball in college. After graduating for the last 3 years I’ve gotten much more into it and play around twice a month. I don’t have an official handicap but my estimate is it’s sitting right around 16-18 . What do you love about golf? I love being able to stay competitive and really compete with myself. It requires all focus and energy and rewards and punishes you accordingly. What brings you to MyGolfSpy? Do you already know any other Spies? I’m here to learn about the game and the equipment to help me improve my game. I like the idea of having a support system and people to consult and help when possible. Where are you from? What is your home course? I’m from Leesville, South Carolina. I don’t necessarily have a home course, but I most often bounce around between Pine Ridge CC, Midland Valley CC, and Persimmon Hill GC. What are the best and worst things about golf in your region? The best thing is the weather. It gets hot but some days it’s still tolerable and winter golf is not an issue for the most part. The worst thing is the constant hard pan bunkers. Apparently good sand is hard to come by in SC... You would think otherwise. Greens also tend to get scorched at public courses. What do you do for a living? I teach middle school and coach high school baseball. How’d you pick your user name My first name and my late younger brother’s/my senior year in college baseball number.
