Test Reviews posted by Mtbryant01

  1. Hey guys, my name is Matthew Bryant. I can’t thank MGS enough for the opportunities it gives its readers on the forum to test, receive, and keep equipment. I was selected for the great opportunity to be apart of the Cobra Connect challenge! Unfortunately, we never quite got the challenge aspect off the ground as we endured what everyone else has in 2021: production delays, limited availability in inventory, and long lead times for equipment. The challenge now turned into a review on the cobra equipment that we received. I will provide a review on all the equipment I received and update this post when I receive the rest.

Before I get into the review on the Cobra equipment, I wanted to tell a little bit about myself. I have been apart of My Golf Spy on the forum since 2020. This is my 3rd review as I have had the opportunity to test and review the Rapsodo MLM and the Align XL golf balls. MGS has helped my game tremendously reading through everyone’s posts and offering up experiences, tips, and drills. I grew up playing other sports and took up golf more seriously in college. I work for the Power Company here in Alabama and am married to my beautiful wife, Kelsey. We have one son, Brooks, who has to be on the move constantly. My golf game is currently up and down. I float between a 5 and 7 handicap with a goal of breaking 80 everytime I step on the course.

Below are my old gamers before I was selected for the Cobra connect challenge

Driver: Ping G410 Plus w/ Project X Evenflow Black Stiff flex

5 and 3 wood: Adams GT Tight Lies

     AW-4iron: Taylormade SLDR stiff flex

     56 degree: Cleveland Rotex 2.0 RTX 588

     60 degee: Titleist Vokey SM7 08M

     Putter: Scotty Camerson Newport 2.5

Part of the Cobra Connect challenge, we received some Arccos sensors to get a baseline for the old gamers. Here are a couple screenshots of what my yardages looked like, GIR percentage, and where I sat compared to a 0 handicap.

Now lets get to the real meat of the review! What do you think of Cobra when you first hear of it? Bryson smashing drives or Rickie and his beautiful irons…Oh what about that 3D printed putter. Nah, it should be the Cobra Connect Challenge (well this year, just a review of the clubs, but you get the point!!)

After getting selected, I went and met with a Cobra rep and got fitted for my bag. Great experience that I mentioned earlier in the initial thread. Here is what I went with as it is a little different than my old gamers.

Driver: Cobra Radspeed 9 degree w/ Smoke RDX Blue 70S shaft

    Big Tour 3 wood w/ Fujikura Motore X F3 60 S shaft

    5 wood w/ Fujikura Motore X F3 60 S shaft

    4 Hybrid w/ Project X Catalyst 80 shaft

PW-5 iron MIM Copper Tour w/ KBS $ Taper Black 120 S shafts

    50, 54, 58 degree Snakebite wedges w/ KBS Hi-Rev 2.0 125g S

Before I ever got the clubs in hand, here were my initial thoughts/hopes for how these clubs would improve my game:

    1. Big Tour 3 Wood would be a fairway finder and a nice backup to my driver if I’m off with it

    2. 4 hybrid could be more consistent than my old 4 iron

    3. Consistency with irons. Hit more greens.

Clubs slowly came in. I have had some issues for some reason getting all my clubs in. I first got my irons and wedges in. Then came the Driver and 4 hybrid. After that, chaos. All I have left to receive is the big tour 3 wood and the 5 wood. Wait and wait. Finally get a package one day. IT’s two clubs! Finally!! Wrong. Cobra sent me a big tour 3 wood and a regular 3 wood. So, I have everything now, except the 5 wood. To this day (December 29th), I still don’t have the 5 wood. Maybe one day it’ll show up. All that to say, I understand 2021 has been a crazy year with inventory and production delay. Now onto all the club reviews.

Driver: Radspeed 9 degree (set at +1) w/ Smoke RDX Blue 70S shaft

I love the look of this driver. The matte blue is a cool look to me. Did I expect to start hitting like Bryson? Kind of…Okay not really. One of my weaknesses in my game is off the tee sometimes. With my strong grip and swing path, I sometimes come through and duck hook the ball. This driver, to me, looks a little closed at address compared to my Ping G410 Plus driver. This caused me to really try and fight to try and keep the club face open through impact. I have struggled a little bit with a pull left off the tee with this club, but I have also squared some up that went just as far if not further than my old gamer. I have not played with the weights that can be changed out as I’ve only been using the default weights. I set this club at +1 from a 9 degree loft because at the fitting, I was getting a lower spin rate. Below is a comparison with both drivers on my misses off the tee. Not a crazy difference, but still slightly worse.  I need more reps with this driver to continue to see if I’m going to keep this in the bag or not. I’m not giving up on it yet.

    3 wood: Big Tour 3 wood w/ Fujikura Motore X F3 60 S shaft

I finally received this club mid November. I have not had a ton of practice with it. I will mainly be using this club off the tee as this is what its purpose is. Almost like a mini driver. The rounds that I have played with it so far, I find myself using this club on tighter fairways. Once I get through this little rut I’m in with my swing and off the tee game, I believe this club can be a weapon. Weight is near the face. The ball jumps off the face, and is a low missile. When I say low missile, I don’t mean worm burners, just lower than a regular 3 wood flight. This can be extremely helpful with wind in your face. With a lot of top spin generated from this club, there is a ton of roll out. This might not be very helpful on a super wet day, but any other day, I’m getting tons of roll out. Below is an example of a round I had where I used this club off the tee a good bit. I love the look of this club. Will definitely keep this in the bag with hopes of getting a better feel for it over time.

5 wood: will update when I receive it. My plan is to use this club as my second shot on par 5s.

    Hybrid: 4 Hybrid w/ Project X Catalyst 80 shaft

    IMG_2809.JPG.c7ec99178654b93d04f656b61086ff20.JPGIMG_2808.JPG.30edfde3838d2b293df78516e6e65f66.JPG

This has probably been my most surprising club. I have really enjoyed using this club. Maybe because I have been forced to use it more without my 5 wood, I have gotten a decent amount of use with it. Compared to my old 4 iron, this has been a significant upgrade. I am still getting used to a hybrid swing as I want to treat it as a wood, which leads to some errant shots. I have found that It has been easier for me to fade or draw this compared to my 4 iron. My smart distance with this club is anywhere between 215 and 230, but I have clipped this a couple times up to 250 yards. If you are in the market for a hybrid, I would definitely suggest giving Cobra a try.

Irons: PW-5 iron MIM Copper Tour w/ KBS $ Taper Black 120 S shafts

    IMG_1772.JPG.642fe60da5dd7f215cb18c15cf7f844b.JPGIMG_1784.jpg.c02afc3635273d415c76cb89890747ba.jpg

This was what I was most excited about coming into receiving these clubs. The copper face with black shafts is downright sexy. I knew my existing irons weren’t fit for me properly. I went from a 90g shaft in my old clubs to 120g shafts. I decided to go with a PW-5i and drop my old AW and 4 iron and go with another wedge and hybrid instead. I think this has worked out great! I can really feel the club going through my swing and to impact. The shafts I have produce a little lower ball flight which is expected. My old Taylormade irons were extremely hot and went a little further than I liked. These MIM tour irons have been exactly what I have been looking for distance wise. There have been nice gaps all the way through. These irons are definitely forgiving even when I don’t flush them. This doesn’t bother me as much as I thought it would, but the copper has worn down a little bit on some of the clubs I have used the most like the 9 iron below. This has really been the only club with this much wear. It's mainly the bottom of the clubs, so you really don't notice when the club is at address. All the other clubs just have some bumps and bruises on them. See some pictures below.

    Wedges: 50, 54, 58 degree Snakebite wedges w/ KBS Hi-Rev 2.0 125g S

I have really enjoyed these wedges. An unfortunate part of my game is that I am chipping a decent amount around the greens. (2022 goal, more GIRs). I have mainly used the 54 and 58 around the greens. I like to use the 50 and 54 out in the fairway with 110 yard shots and in. I have felt really comfortable being able to play low or high shots from the fairway with these clubs. In the sand, I only use the 58 degree with the full face grooves. It has been a weapon for me. Like we have seen in the wet ball test, these wedges sometimes jump or won’t grab as much. That has been really the only small issue for me. Any other time, I have loved these. You have the ability with these wedges to really pick and choose what you want with the bounce and loft combos.

    Cobra Ultralight Stand Bag

We received this bag along with the clubs. This bag is “ultralight” for a reason. Very minimal storage compartments and not a dedicated spot to place your putter. If you’re a minimalist, this bag is for you. I am a little picky and just prefer more storage and slots for my clubs. This bag is light and fits on my push cart, so no complaints there.

Overall: Minus my swing woes off the tee with the driver/big tour 3 wood, I have LOVED my new set. Obviously, I would have loved to get these clubs in sooner (still waiting for one), but you can’t go wrong with the MIM tour irons, snakebite wedges, or the radspeed woods. Don’t let Bryson’s ego sway you from looking away from Cobra. Give it a look if you are getting fit for some clubs, you won’t be disappointed. Here are some screenshots below of some Arccos data with the new Cobra clubs (all compared to a 0 handicap).
