PING s159 Wedges: 2024 Forum Member Review

These wedges are the one club I'm thinking about buying this year, so I'm looking forward to seeing how they work for you all! -

I just can't do black shoes for some reason, and already have a pair of white golf shoes, so I figured grey was a good middle ground. -

Got out for nine holes after work. First time out with the newly reshafted irons. Putter sucked, so I didn’t score great despite 6 GIRs (finished with a +7 41), but the 3 iron with the MMT UT shaft is an absolute rocket launcher!
-
Yep. I will say that regardless of whether you do everything with one wedge (which is my preference) or have different wedges you use, mixing up your practice from shot to shot (rather than block practice where you practice the same shot 30x in a row) will get better on-course results.

The draw vs. fade in the different settings makes sense. Loft sleeves pretty much universally move the lie angle more upright when you add loft, and flatten out the lie angle when you remove it, so a driver set to -1° will normally tend to fade more than that same club set to +1°.

Don't know if it counts as "practice", but I've been reading this book: A lot of stuff that I already know and may be obvious to people who track their strokes gained and follow some of the advanced stats out there now, but still some nuggets that are useful. And I can think of a few playing partners who could really use to read it!

2020 Official Member Review: Exputt putting simulator
gavinski91 replied to StrokerAce's topic in Forum Testing Reviews
I have a white face on my putter, and haven't had issues as long as I don't have the light pointing directly at the putter face (and I don't use the stickers). I stick with overhead lighting, and sometimes an additional reading light pointed at 45° down on the mat from behind. -
For reference, my Apple Watch SE (the very base model) can barely get through 9 holes, so for an 18-hole round I typically use my Link. Ran into an interesting issue on Saturday though where I went into a cedar hedge looking for my ball, and realized 20 yards down the fairway that my Link wasn't on my belt anymore. Spent about 10 minutes looking for it and couldn't find it, so finished the round and went back to look more. The phone app has a "Find My Link" feature which shows the last place it shared it's location with your phone, and I was able to narrow the search down by starting a new round on my phone and walking up and down the hedge until it showed that my Link was connected via Bluetooth. However, there is no way to use the app to get the Link to make a sound. Ended up finding it after another 10 minutes of searching, but it seems like that would be a useful feature that would be pretty easy to implement.

Challenged myself at the beginning of the week to sink 10 consecutive 10-foot putts on the Exputt sim. Last night was the fourth night of trying and I finally completed the challenge (after about 850 putts between the 4 nights). Key changes for me were to wrap my right thumb around (instead of pointing it down the grip) and adding a few degrees of forward press. Really useful to be able to roll hundreds of putts with the immediate feedback you get from the Exputt system.

Congrats to the testers! Although I can't believe that @GolfSpy_APH would go so far as to call @GolfSpy AFG a beta..... -

Ordered a couple of $-Taper 120 shafts for my 4 and 5 iron, and an MMT UT 105S for my 3 iron. Excited to have a full set up and running again! -

3.5 strokes gained over your averages though, that's a crazy improvement right off the bat! -
2024 TaylorMade TP5 and TP5X Golf Balls

Came across this on my instagram feed this morning - $100m investment not looking too good if this is a persistent issue! The one ball is definitely way off, but it looks like a good amount out of a dozen box have off-center cores to some degree. -

I had three big takeaways from using the Exputt. One is the importance of face angle - learned pretty quickly that path is pretty much irrelevant when it comes to putting, and you should just focus on face angle and speed. The second takeaway, related to that, was that I learned that I need a face balanced putter. I compared two similar mallets - one with 20° of toe hang, and the other face balanced, and my face angle distribution was waaaay better with the face balanced putter. The final takeaway was developing a system for distance control by maintaining the same tempo with every putt stroke and just varying the length of my backswing and follow through. Definitely feel you on the change in expectations though - I feel like my putting has been pretty bad over the past year, but when I pull up my Arccos data this is what it says: Think I'm gonna pull the Exputt out and get some practice in before the season really kicks off! -
First ever drive of my life that carried over 300 yards. Decided to challenge the bunker and carried it easily - ball actually hit a wet spot and plugged, so the distance was all carry.

Down in Arizona for a few days, so brought the clubs and played San Tan Highlands yesterday. Was playing the round of my life until the 18th, where I lost three balls to the water and put a 10 on the scorecard. So that one goes down as an 83 (my third lowest round ever) and the hunt to break 80 continues! Driver was the difference maker on the day - everything was going straight and long, giving me easy approach shots for a record 11 GIRs.

With the announce of the Mizuno 245, a couple of used-club resellers have been liquidating their 225 inventory on Ebay, which allowed me to pick up a very clean Mizuno Pro 225 3 iron for $65. So once everything arrives, my combo set will be 225 from 3-5, and 223 from 6-P. Might need to get @dlow206 to reshaft the 4 and 5 with $-Tapers to match my 223s. Any suggestions for a shaft for the 3 iron as a driving iron? I'm looking for something graphite over 100g, currently looking at MMT, LAGP L-Series, or Axiom. Or should I just stick with what works in the $-Taper? -

Just be aware that they can be very heavy and put your swingweights off (especially in the white color for some reason). -

Welp, my new (used) 5 wood shaft arrived, and they sent me a 60g one. Which is what I already have on the club, and is why I ordered a 70g. Send it back and try again..... -

Was looking at a used shaft for my 5-wood on Ebay - same as what I have in there currently, but heavier. Was already listed at half off, so I added it to my watchlist to think about it some more. Got an email with an extra 20% off, so pulled the trigger, and it's on the way for $40 all-in. Will need to tip it and cut it down when it arrives, but looking forward to getting my bag perfected over the off-season! -
Got out for a quick 9 this afternoon. Shot a 38 (+4). Hit OB twice off the tee, but still managed to bogey both of those holes, so without those penalties it would have been an even par round. New irons continue to perform well!
