  1. Hello all! We are slowly getting closer to testing season (no I don’t have any inside information …. Right now). With that there has been a lot of work going on in the background to enhance the site and bring some improvements to the site. In this thread I will let you know all what is going on when we are getting close or about to launch any new features, structure and more. Without further delay the first update we are bringing to the membership is actually a older feature which ended up on the cutting room floor, but is bring brought back to life by popular demand. The Community Map! What is this? - The community map is a feature we had years ago and it’s pretty simple. It is a map of the world where you can tag your location and where you are located. Why now? Well the long and the short of it is I was able to get approval to purchase it and again it is a feature that has been asked for time and time again. Another key feature we are working on is Community engagement… I know we hear this all the time, but this is all part of a bigger plan to increase get togethers, events and a phenomenal community not just online, but in person as well. What can we do with it? This is a bit different than the older member map which has been renamed to Community Map. Again you can tag your location (home) so other spies can see who is all living in your area. We are also introducing a secondary function within this single application which is course reviews. It is pretty simple, have a course you want to write a review for? Go into the “create” go down to Community Map Marker and Select Course Review. From there find it on the map, mark it, add in the course name, a brief description and hit submit. It is after this that you are able to write your review on the course (unless it has already been created) and you can grade it out of your 5 stars however you like. We are also incorporating (at a later date) some of the player profile features (if you have it filled out) where when hovering over the player you can see their player profile data. Where is the Map Located? Well you can find the map here: https://forum.mygolfspy.com/communitymap/ Or simply go the the “Members” Tab at the top of any page and when the drop down comes you will find “Community Map” This was a very useful tool in the past in getting members together and creating a community that is more than just a forum. The great thing is it is also optional. Don’t want to take part? No requirement for testing or profile completion or any of that. This feature is there for you to use as you wish. Whether it is to check out course reviews, write your own on a course that has a review or doesn’t or seeing what spys are in your area which you may want to get a game in with this feature will allow you to do that. This is only the beginning and we have a lot more in store to bring you in the near(ish) future. Cheers, Jamie
  2. Alrighty fellow spies, it's time to gear up for the summer league season. With that in mind, I decided to spin up a new thread for the upcoming season. I play in a casual/competitive league, based in the Tampa area, that branches out to nearby areas for a 14 event season with a Ryder Cup style team event to wrap up the season. What to expect. I approach these reviews as a look at the total golf experience, not just the course and how it plays. For my format, I lead in with the name of the course, where it is, a link to the applicable course website, which tees were played, and how much it costs. You can see some examples in the previous seasons' version of this thread (Florida League Course Reviews) or in my Tampa Area Course Reviews thread. My price scale is from 1 to 4 dollar signs. $ <50, $$ 50-75, $$$ 75-95, $$$$ >95. The league tries to find the best courses at the best value so that has an influence on the price scale. My review areas include: Course Description, Course Conditions, Practice Facilities, and Course Employees. At the end of each review I'll include an overall summary of the golf experience and an overall recommendation. = Don't Bother, = Do Not Recommend, = Recommend, = Definite Recommend, = Don't Miss It With all of that to set the stage, here is this season's course lineup Mission Inn Resort - El Campeon, Howey In the Hills, FL Southern Hills Plantation, Brooksville FL Old Corkscrew, Estero FL Orange County National - Panther Lake, Orlando FL Bella Collina, Orlando FL Juliette Falls, Dunellon FL Lake Jovita - North, Dade City FL Candler Hills CC, Ocala FL Eaglebrooke, Lakeland FL Lake Jovita - South, Dade City FL Innisbrook Resort - Copperhead, Palm Harbor FL Streamsong Resort - Red/Blue (2-day event), Bowling Green FL TPC Tampa Bay, Tampa FL Esplanade at Azario, Lakewood Ranch FL League Invitational: Ritz Carlton Members Club, Bradenton FL Team Cup Event: Black Diamond Golf Club - Ranch/Quarry, Lecanto FL Keep in mind, I may not be able to play in every event of the season, but I do my best. The events I do play, I try to have the course review completed before the end of that weekend. If you are familiar at all with any of those venues, you can see it is a pretty good lineup to begin with. To those who have followed the previous course review threads, thanks for reading. I'm looking forward to another good season, and providing some good info for anyone looking to play in the area.
  3. I've just started my second season playing in a local Florida amateur league. We average a field of 36 players in two handicapped flights with individual handicaps ranging from low single digits to 30+. Since I'm offering only course reviews, I will leave the league name out, and say only that we play on West Central Florida area courses. Some of the venues will be more well known than others, but I will do my best to give a fair assessment of the courses as we go. Where possible I will include a link and the rating/slope of the tees played, and a general feeling on the course from that day's players. I'll use a three tiered price rating: Under $50 - $ $50-75 - $$ $75+ - $$$
  4. Many of you have followed and read the course review thread I started for my summer league events. Thank you to all who have read along. In order to keep my course review writing chops up to speed, I've started this thread now to include the local courses in the Tampa (or greater Tampa Bay) area where I play outside the league. I'll keep the same format for the reviews just more from the eye of an individual round rather than part of a large group or tourney. To get a feel for the style check out the league reviews under the Florida League Course Reviews. Chime in if you have a course in mind you'd like a review on and I'll see what I can do to make it happen.
  5. There's a really good blog post digging into golfer performance by handicap level this morning, which utilizes TheGrint's database of recorded rounds. One of the other features of TheGrint is the ability for everyday golfers, like you and me, to give a brief overview of the condition and playability of the courses that you visit. I've been a 'Grinter' for the last year and have found it really useful - I've even played a round with a random person through TheGrint and the local Club that I'm a part of. TheGrint have come up with the Top-20 courses in the US. I know, everybody has their own list of Top-20 courses - this list is compiled from over 100,000 reviews on its site from members who have played the courses. The list is limited to courses that have had at least 30 reviews, but gives both a 'fun rating' and 'shape rating'. There are some well known courses on here, but most I've not heard of (no local courses in Hawaii make the list, unfortunately). http://www.thegrint.com/range/2014/11/thegrint-top-20-golf-courses-ranking-grinters/ The link has photos of all of the Top-20 courses as well - some of which look amazing! Have you played any of these courses? Would you agree with the rankings for the ones you've played? Are there any surprizes in your neck of the woods?
