This week we have a new tour stop; The Mexico Open at Vidanta. This has been the country's national championship dating back to 1944 but this will be the first time it's been played as part of the PGA Tour schedule. It is also the first time a PGA event has taken place at Vidanta Vallarta - a Greg Norman Signature layout. By all accounts, this resort course is normally maintained to be quite forgiving (don't want to upset the guests) with wide open landing areas off the tee's. The design is slanted towards threading second shots over and around a generous number of bunkers and water hazards. It sounds like they have grown the ruff areas a bit but, short of having high winds, many suspect a wining score in the low 20's.
The field is a wee bit lacking in strength with many from the Zurich Classic opting not to make the trip. Man, I would think these players wife's and kids would be hounding them to go to a resort venue . Jon Rahm is the top ranked player and favorite to win. Berger, Ancer, and Finau are the only others in the top 25 ranked players. Alvaro Ortiz won this event in 2021 and will be there to defend the title.
