whiskey golf
Straight forward question. If you cut off 1.5" off of a driver, about how much SW points would you lose and what would happen to the shaft? Same question for 1" and 0.5". I'll eventually do this or not depending on how much it changes the club and feel Driver- cut off 1.5", from 46" to 44.5" 3 wood- cut off 1", from 43" to 42" hybrid- cut off 0.5", I believe it would go from 40" to 39.5" Or would I just be better off taping off the lengths given and choking up on the club? hckymeyer
1/2" = 3 SW points. As for the flex of the shaft cutting from the butt end will not make a difference. Thanks, I wasn't sure about the flex because I know that tipping it makes it stiffer but I would imagine that since the shaft loses weight that it would become more flexible due to the head weight. Blade
Actually it will make the shaft play stiffer. The shaft itself doesn't get stiffer. But the shorter length will make the club feel lighter and you're reducing the overall club's resistance to movement so it won't load the shaft as much as it did at full length. Imagine how whippy that shaft would feel if you added a foot to it. Now how stiff would it feel if you cut a foot off? .5", 1.0" , 1.5", are incrementally doing the same thing, just not as drastically of course. hckymeyer
Also remember that shafts are built to be butt trimmed. It's on purpose so you can get a desired playing length without messing up the flex. Cutting 1" from the tip would have a drastic difference compared to 1" from the butt. whiskey golf
Okay thanks for your responses. I'm unsure what I will do because I really don't want to change the way the club plays, I may be better off just choking up on the club.
Blade
That would give you an idea if it would work for you or not. I would try that for awhile before actually cutting it anyway.
SMRT
I have messed with lots of lengths and shafts over the last 2 years. My experience has been that tipping or butt trimming does effect the flex. Tipping will effect it more than butt trimming but both will make it stiffer. Another thing I have noticed is that it does effect ball flight. What I have seen is that by butt trimming a low launch shaft, it will bring up the launch angle. I assume that is because most low launch shafts have a high bend point and as you move that point closer to the grip you lose some of the flex. Good luck playing with it. It was fun and frustrating all at the same time. I finally found my best setup after 2 years of playing so I am now ready to find some good scores next year. Blade
That doesn't make sense. Moving the bend point up and losing flex both lower the launch. Are you sure you weren't just managing to get a more positive attack angle due to a shorter shaft?
SMRT
Apparently everything I try does the opposite that it normally would do for an actual golfer. If I use a weaker shaft, it lowers the ball flight. If I use a stiffer shaft, the launch angle increases. When I butt cut a low launch shaft, which stiffens the shaft a little, the ball launches higher. In my opinion, and experience, this happens because a weaker shaft is bent back through impact which flattens the club face and lowers the launch. A stiffer shaft does not bend back as much so the face does not flatten and the ball launches higher. Just my experience with my swing.
