i know Phil does this kind of thing, but i am curious as to doing something like this for myself, has anyone tried it? i was thinking about purchasing the xhot pro 13* fwd and putting it on my driver shaft, but i am not sure, is this something i should try or would it not work, I'm always tinkering around, so I'm just throwing stuff out there to see if anyone has tried this.

Are you wanting to play it more off the tee or off the mat?  It's basically going to be a higher lofted smaller head driver that you sometimes take off the deck.  Personally I wouldn't want to play a 45" 3w off the deck, it's hard enough to control as it is.  I also happen to love hitting driver and it's one of the most consistent clubs in my bag, so no need to mess with it.

By all means try it out, especially if you can do the club work yourself you aren't really out any cost.  But for me to make or replace a club in my bag I need to have a clear idea of what I'm trying to get out of it that I don't already have.  So may want to think about what you want it to do that your current setup isn't doing before you replace a club with it.

I would think the smaller head would lead to less forgiveness than a driver head, but it just depends on what you hit best and what you like looking down at.

If you do hit it better/farther than your driver I would say that is more of an indication of an ill fitted driver than anything.  But that's just my opinion.  Like I said before though, if you can do the club work yourself it's a pretty inexpensive experiment to try out.  Just keep in mind that most shafts suggest being tipped when installed in a 3w head compared to a driver head.  So it might play a bit more flexible than it would in a driver head.

I play a x stiff speeder driver shaft in my 3 Deep. I have not noticed any significant gain in yardage or increase in dispersion with the switch in shafts, so I will be moving back to the fw shaft that was in it.

I carried a RBZ Stage 2 with a stock Stage 2 TP Driver shaft in it for a scramble last year. Definitely longer when you catch it, but even with a counter-weighted Secret Grip, the weight was prohibitive to say the least. Unwieldy for sure.

This is an easy experiment to try and have done do with the R11 series. I put a 48° shaft in my driver. Then made a Phrankenwood by taking the R11 T3 14° tuned it down to 12.5° and installed a 44.5" driver shaft. This turned out to be a really great driver and I really liked the small head. It was not very forgiving.

I took this a step farther and created a Hybridwood. I took the R11 Rescue 18° and tuned it to 16.5° and installed it on a 43" 3 wood shaft (that I happened to have available.). This was a truly awesome club and had revived this and put back in the bag for the up coming Texas Open. Sadly it snapped in half Sunday while I was using it off the tee. No warning. Just a clean break an inch above the hosel.

I am not planning on doing this again. When it comes right down to it, the consistency of the shorter shaft is worth more to me than the distance.
