SPY VIP GolfSpy_X Posted February 27, 2010 SPY VIP Share Posted February 27, 2010 Putter stamping has become big business. It has become one of the most popular way to personalize a putter. BUT... What are your thoughts on stamping a putter? Is it now being over done? Do you like hand stamping? LET'S HEAR YOUR OPINION AND SHOW OFF YOUR PUTTERS THAT HAVE BEEN CUSTOM STAMPED! #TruthDigest
mcbush25
I am not going to say I don't like stamping on putters, but the only thing is you personalize a putter too much then you are kind of up the creek if you decide to sell it. If you plan on keeping it then I love stamping putters!
myndcraft
I love the hand stamping on putters! Not to change the subject though, but the one think I HATE on them… snow. It just looks ridiculous to me.
scottyallanb
Stampings can be fun if not over done. I dont agree that stampings should make a putter more valueable. Do it for personal reasons not to make money. Scotty B
Jballmn
I like stampings that are done to personalize a putter, but nothing over the top, stamping everywhere you have open metal!... A stamp here and there can be done very tastefully
SunsetBeachCustomPutters
I like stampings that are done to personalize a putter, but nothing over the top, stamping everywhere you have open metal!... A stamp here and there can be done very tastefully Owning a putter company I have to give my two cents. LOL 1. Some people put a few miner stamps, maybe a nickname or statement. They are happy on down the road. 2. The guys that go overboard on the stamps eventually end up ordering another putter with much less stamping saying that their first one was too busy. I try and tell everyone I talk to about this, but in the end it is up to them. 3. I do not like snow either. SPY VIP GolfSpy Dave Posted March 1, 2010 SPY VIP Share Posted March 1, 2010 I am not a fan of the super-stamped putter either. Nor snow. However, I love the creative ways that stamping can make a putter suit the owner. Another thing to think about, and stir up the debate is engraving. Some like it, some do not. I have a Byron coming with an engraved surfboard in the cavity. Looks cool to me, but not everyone agrees. Sort of like choosing a putter in the first place. JArmour
I love hand stamping but agree with Chris can't stand the snow. I definitely look for putters now with minimal stampings. I also don't customize putters with initials anymore.
Matt Saternus
Wow, I'm very surprised to find people who agree with me about hating snow (I always hate snow on putters, but I hate on the ground much more right now). I like hand stamping and engraving. I think it offers the opportunity to make a putter more personal and it adds fun. One thing I don't like is the idea that stamps make a putter more valuable or more collectable (i.e. "this stamp is only going to be put on 10 putters, so it's really valuable"). That's not something I would pay for, ever. A putter's value/price, IMO, comes from the quality of the craftsmanship, headshape, material, etc. Here's the stamping I have on all my customs (more or less). I like to put my name on them to keep me from hoing, and I think it just looks good on 006-style bumpers (I am Tiger Woods). TWShoot67
I believe that after we have 50 posts we shall see that over 80% of the membership agrees that SNOW is one of the weaker stampings you can have done to personalize your flat stick! Viper12
I also prefer the minimalist approach with little or no stamping. Besides being a bit distracting I would have to imagine it makes resale a bit more difficult.

Hey, tastes change over time and unless you have the money to collect putters and not have to sell them to reinvest in a new stick, then stamping is not something you should do unless the stamping you've done will appeal to others. Initials do seem to kill value. Some of the makers and refinishers can do some cool things to cover some of it up. It may just be though if your name is Will Smith and you buy a cool putter with initials, you will now be known as "JR" If seeking a gamer, and you don't mind the initials, you can score a great putter at a deep discount. If you do then sell it, you can probably get close to what you paid for it. It's also true the some refinishers do a great job getting rid of old initials. I sold a putter to someone because the initials on the face bothered me and he had Kevin Colbert re-mill the face and you've never know they were there. Obviously, that took off some weight, but it worked out nicely. Follow me on Twitter: @MattSaternus

Changed the cavity stamping. Added colors. I am having issues with photos on PT after they changed design. OTw I would go find the one I am talking about. Funky would know. Matt Saternus
Yeah, the putter is with RyMail now. JR told me they were still loading all the old pics back up. I don't think I saw the one that you mentioned Byron redoing, I'd definitely like to see pics of that when you can get them. SPY VIP GolfSpy Dave Posted March 11, 2010 SPY VIP Share Posted March 11, 2010 I'll look for it. I seem to remember Byron adding stamping to the face to make a larger image out of stamps, covering the initials.
