Sandblast irons to a satin finish.

I would like to make my irons a satin finish from a chrome finish.

 

Would a cheap sandblaster 'ideal for removing stone chips' do the job?

 

Plus would this treatment actually remove the chrome or not? If so is there anything I could do to prevent it from 'rawing'?

Another way to just scuff it up a little with a scotch brite pad or sand paper.  Don't remove all the chrome if you don't want it to rust.

How coarse should the sandpaper be? I have previously attempted this with sandpaper and without advice but it just looked like poorly maintained chrome

Try a maroon 3m Scotch Brite pad. I do alot of satin brushed finishes on motorcycle chrome parts and they always seem to do the trick.

For sandpaper the finer the better.  If you don't like the look go over it again with a finer paper.

 

That being said I agree with ACcustomX, start off with a scotch brite pad.  If you have any old clubs laying around that's a good place to start practicing until you get the look you want.  Or swing by a play-it-again and pick up a cheap demo 6 iron (they usually have a bunch) and practice on that.

You don't want to sandblast anyway.  The most abrasive media you'll want to use is glass beads, though walnut shells would be even better.  You don't want anything that'll dull the grooves.

Bit I'd use a red scotchbrite.  If you want to make it easier, use the scotchbrite Dremel atachment.

I use steel wool when I want to "satin-ize" stuff.

Personally, I would get a few Salvation Army clubs for next to nothing,then try a few different processes.

 

My first try would be a blast booth with glass beads, and I would also try some 60 grit sand. I don't see walnut shells having enough bite.

Back off a foot or two to start, and use at least two layers of duct tape to protect areas you don't want blasted.
