Career Advice

HighFade

Recommended Posts

My son is starting his new job in two weeks, and is done at the old job.  He's calling the gap "funemployment."  So far, it sounds like he's enjoying it.  Yesterday, he volunteered to get drunk for the Milwaukee police department so they had genuine subjects for live sobriety testing (hope they gave him a ride home).  Hopefully, Highfade can have a good, but short, Funemployment time as well.  Good luck!

Now that sounds like a great job!!

For you IT guys out there:

I have to vent about lame interview questions. These were two questions, with no other information given.

1. How would you shape traffic?

2. How do you affect traffic?

Getting tired of vague questions to which there is only one correct answer: theirs. There are 100 different answers to those vague ass questions.

I used to interview a lot, and the worst thing you could do is ask vague questions. You'll get vague answers. Very frustrating.

Good news: the one position I really want, the guy asked specific questions and was a good communicator. Bad communications skills are far too common in IT.

I know what the guy was going for - trying to see what you know about QoS, but if he's looking to start a conversation about classification, marking, policing, etc., there are so many better ways to do so.  I like to ask candidates to whiteboard networks they've designed or worked on.

You hit it on the head. But without any other info, they're just far too vague. Those were two questions from two different guys. The shaping question was looking for methods of traffic throttling, and the other was looking for bgp route selection. That's ok though. It makes it easier for me. I'm interviewing them too. There's nothing worse than getting the wrong job!

You should answer that they should get routers without QoS capabilities and it won't be an issue anymore. Plus they're a lot cheaper.
