Paulina on the Cover

Deadspin posted a good article today about Paulina Gretzky being on the cover of the new issue of Golf Digest.  I'm curious what people think about this?

http://deadspin.com/lpga-golfers-miffed-at-paulina-gretzkys-golf-digest-co-1557971817

In my opinion, she doesn't belong on the cover at all and I get what some of the LPGA players are saying, why hasn't Paula Creamer been on the cover?  What does Paulina do or what has she done for the game of golf?  Nothing other than strut around the golf course following DJ and appear in a Taylormade commercials which again she has nothing to do with.  They say the issue is about fitness, so how does a 100lb 5' woman translate into getting 6' 200lb man into shape? I can't judge until I get the magazine in the mail but just from what I've seen online I'm not impressed with this issue.

Also.. I know I'll catch some heat for this but I don't think she is a good looking woman, there are plenty of other women I would prefer to see on the cover. The only reason she is where she is is because of 1. her dad and 2. she posts a million pictures of herself in skimpy bikini's, not many posts of her playing golf or anything that would warrant her to be on the cover of Golf Digest.

Thats my morning rant and I'm sticking to it.

I agree with your morning rant, and I'll second it.

I'm watching morning drive as I reply here and this was their topic today. She doesn't belong anywhere near the cover of golf digest. I don't find her to be particularly attractive either, but I won't focus on that aspect of it. She's attractive enough and held a golf club a few times. And her pedigree is without question.

According to one of the talking heads on morning drive, the argument in favor of having her on the cover is that the folks at the magazine based off of consumer feedback have determined that this is what people want. It's a business and they are in the business of moving product. That LPGA players have not generated the feedback that they have desired. Putting Paulina on the cover (I'm paraphrasing here) will expose more people to the game and then expose them to the wonderful LPGA players buried in the pages inside.

Ok, that's fine I'll buy that argument. I'm not offended by a pretty face on a magazine. Funny thing, when I read a golf magazine I want to read about golf though. Not pretty people related to the sport. I'm probably right in the ideal demographic this magazine wants to grab. Early 30's, professional, buy tons of golf equipment, have enough disposable income to hit my local goat farm sometimes more than once a week. And I'm seriously considering logging In and canceling my subscription once more. How's that for consumer feedback. Featuring Paulina on the cover is desperate. If I wanted to see that I'd renew my Maxim subscription from when I was 18.

If Kate Upton can share the cover of DG with Arnie(Dec '13), why can't Paulina be on the cover?

We can't be prejudice for one issue.  Last May, Holly Sonders was on the cover and nobody complained.

However, in the last two years, there have been NO LPGA players on the cover.  There have been some  articles featuring LPGA Players, but none have graced the cover of DG.

Let's face it, DG needs to put some LPGA Players on the cover as well.....

1. Kate was on WITH the King

2. Holly Saunders is in the industry and a good golfer

3.  I'll agree that the LPGA needs some love

I agree that I don't think she's all that attractive..........now her mom, back in the day, oh mama.

The outrage is justified. Even with the Upton cover, Arnie gave it some golf legitimacy. This one just has a club to show how it is about golf.

Blair O'Neal in the same garb would have been more appropriate. :D

My first reaction was that if LPGA players want to be on the cover, they need to start making other headlines first. GD has to put out issues that sell, so they put what sells on the cover. Whether they like it or not, Paulina is associated with golf and most golfers are men.

But then a quick Google search of GD covers shows Sandra Gal, Jiyai Shin, Natalie Gulbis, and Holly Sonders

Gotta say I was surprised I didn't see Yani, Annika, or Inbee. These are women who definitely deserved their time on GD's cover.

This did catch my eye though:

Much like the love/hate relationship with Tiger Woods the bottom line is that by putting Paulina on the cover they got people talking about Golf Digest again.  From a business standpoint I think it's a brilliant move.  From a golfers perspective it might not make much sense, but I'm willing to put money down that this will be one of the higher selling issues of the year.  And after all isn't the point to sell more magazines?

I agree that Paulina shouldn't be on the cover.  When i look at her yes she is attractive but she doesn't scream fitness  she screams skinny.  There is a difference.  I agree there are several LPGA women that you could put in the same outfit and turn just as many or more heads with.  Granted they have to be willing to dress in it. And i bet the majority of guys in who subscribe and buy Golf Digest who are in their 50s and 60s like my dad have no idea who Paulina Gretzky is but they do know who the LPGA women are from watching it.

While I side with the majority of us who are thinking "she has nothing about her that justifies her being on the cover of a Golf magazine.", the fact is that Golf Digest is beholden to no one but the almighty dollar and they can do whatever they want with their magazine.

If the issue doesn't sell then they will know that they made a mistake, if it sells a ton more than normal I'm sure we'll continue to see more covers like it. The fact is that while I think the LPGA is great and there are plenty of attractive women playing on tour, most of them would probably be upset if they were asked to dress like that to get the cover of Golf Digest. Most would probably be offended that the focus was on their bodies an sexuality rather than their talent and ability.

Since the target market for Golf Digest doesn't appear to be women anyway, I am not really that surprised that they have covers like this.

Perhaps it's time for a women's golf magazine that would cater to their interests and achievements rather than a man's.

My vote goes to Claire Forlani. She's in the scotch ads and played Bobby Jones wife in Stroke of Genius. Still better credentials than Paulina. And better lookin IMO.

It's nice to see I'm not alone in thinking that she's not that good looking, and also doesn't belong on the cover.

Cash is king and that's all GD must be looking for.  In the end I'll enjoy the pics but that's not why I subscribed to GD.

In the end I'm sure we'd all consider it to be a high honor to have a feature sandwiched between scotch ads and a 2 pager for erectile dysfunction.

Ok... I just spit out my coffee...   LOL

Seriously - Golf Digest is a freaking joke - I ended my subscription long ago. Honestly, I'm surprised that the marketing people are still willing to pay for advertising in it. Other than seeing an issue in My dentist's office or at the vet clinic, I don't know anyone that pays for a subscription.

The HOT list has become nothing but marketing porn paid for by the OEMs, the "tips" are usually just rehashed comments from the same people over and over.  I don't think anyone is talking about how GD is great at their "hard hitting journalism".

I place it somewhere between The National Enquirer and USA TODAY.

Ain't that the truth. Golf Channel must think all their viewers are in great need of a financial advisor, drink scotch, and can't get it up.
