Hot News! MGS Most Wanted Mallet Discontinued?!

I picked one up on eBay about a month ago for $125 with shipping included. I assume it's a first version since it has the black paint fill on the bottom. I absolutely love it so far and since I've started getting adjusted to it my confidence has gone through the roof.

Good news to update.

My CS rep called me back and told me the putter was finally here.

So I drove down and collected the putter and rolled a few balls.

From memory, it felt slightly harder than Ketsch Ver 1. Nothing major though.

Here's some photos that confirm

1) it's assembled in Japan

2) the grooves seems to be slightly not as deep

3) the new sole plate

Thanks Westy.

Can't wait to get dialed in on the new putter this weekend as I'm going for a 2D1N unlimited golf trip in Ria Bintan next Monday. It feels good on the few putts I did and seriously looks good as well.

However I think I'll have to baby it a lot cos I saw some areas where the black paint is slightly going off or maybe the layer they did wasn't uniform.

And yes Mark, I can say the new grooves are markedly(pardon the pun) different from Ver 1 which were so much deeper and visible. Hence Ver 2 felt just a bit harder on putts.

I was also informed I'm the 1st and only one to get Ver 2 in Singapore so far(through the official Ping channel) as they can't seem to make it fast enough.

  • 2 weeks later...

Putter was sent back to the local Ping shop as I encountered 2 problems.

1) The white paint on the grooves came out a little. Meaning part of one line came out. Nothing major as it's mostly aesthetic although I'm unsure how it happened.

2) Second point seems more serious as I found rust on the stainless steel sole plate after a recent 2 day-64 holes trip. I didn't use any solvent to clean and after every hole and every game the putter was wiped clean with a cloth. Totally don't understand why rust will occur on ss plate especially on the edges and also part of the bottom. This is a bit worrying as I am totally babying this putter.

That is weird Darren, I'd have guessed Ping would use stainless steel for the plate to eliminate rust.....

As for paint fill, that can happen but not usually so quick.

Let's hope for a speedy resolution - do us a quick review once you've got it back, sure many of us are intrigued by son of ketsch.

Thanks Westy. If rust can form on SS plate, then son of Ketsch has to go.....

It's really humid in South east asia and I can't have a putter rust on me after 60+ holes.

Once I have it back I'll update again. Perhaps do another 18 holes and see if it holds up.

My son's Anser 2 also had rust a while back. So you can imagine the conditions we play.

A Ping putter in Singapore (assembled in Japan with a imperfect shaft label that I've never seen before) that is rusting and losing paint in its first week of use!?!   If I didn't know that you had bought this from an authorized vendor and that counterfeiters would be stupid to produce the problematic Ketsch, I'd suspect it was a fake.

The good news is that I can see the serial number in the photo, so I'll call my Ping guy tomorrow and see what comes up in their database.   If it is real, and it probably is because I've compared Mr. Tan's photos with other enlargements of Ketsch 2 CB's and they match exactly, I'm beginning to suspect that the Ketsch is Kursed!  Or at best its Kwality Kontrol is Krappy.

That shaft band does look questionable.

On another note, hopefully I will have some new version Ketsch info very soon.

Not being cryptic. I was told that I should have info and maybe samples in January.

Fingers crossed.

I stopped by the local Dick's over the Holidays and noted that they still have a Ping Ketsch, Version #2 on hand for $200.

so I rolled a couple and am still amazed at the smoothness of it.  Just wish the price was lower.

I called Ping and Darren's serial number came up as a perfect match in their DB.  Interesting, you have to tell the CS people what region the club came out of so they can switch to the right database.   Europe, the US and Asia are all separate.    But that goofy shaft label is authentic.

So it's a QC issue with the paint loss and the rusting.

Thank you Mark. It's reassuring to know I have a real Ketsch albeit one with a QC problem.

Thinking back, it's kind of weird to see where the putters are made.

Asian putters are machined in US and then sent to Japan to assemble.

Yet the ones in US are machined in US/China? and then assembled in China and sent back to the US?

Anyway I understand from my rep that my putter will be sent back to the workshop today.

Hopefully I will have some updates later in the week.

Edit: I don't have this in the box though. I didn't even have a box in the first place.

I was down at one of the PING dealers yesterday and was told that even the Ketsch (New) would be discontinued and the rep there told me that he had just received news from his boss that they would not be taking in any more orders for the Ketsch.

If so, Darren is probably gonna be one of the very few proud owners of a PING Ketsch in Singapore...

There was a Ketsch in his shop, and it was the New version. Specs wasn't what i was looking for, else I may have been really tempted :(

What a pity... no more Ketsches headed this way, at least to this part of the world i guess...

Few yes. Proud? Not sure haha in view of the fragile nature of this putter.

My rep just told me they are repairing my putter as we speak. Paintfill will be touched up and the rusty part were attributed to dirt. I really wish I had a micro lens to take a photo before I sent in because it looked like rust to me. I know because I was selling steel products for a decade.

Anyway I read online (http://www.thehackersparadise.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-42474.html) that a silicone lubricant can be used to to protect the putter. The silicone( http://www.crcindustries.com/ei/product_detail.aspx?id=02094 ) is non abrasive so I might just want to try it provided I can find it in Singapore.

If what Murac said is true, then perhaps the new version 3 might be out soon. For Ping to release 3 versions in a year, wow the Ketsch seems to be cursed.

I have to admit, I thought the Ketsch was a fluke.  I tried one for the first time last week.  15/15 from 8' and 13/15 from 15'; the 15' putt had 2' of break and the two I missed hit the lip and finished within 6".  My Slight Arc V2 should be here any day now.

The Ketsch I got straight from PING had this in the box.

attachicon.gifimage.jpg

I have a version 1 and my serial number starts 0060, NOT 0066.

Does this mean I don't qualify for the rebate?

Does this mean that my grooves may not be too deep?

Was mine in an earlier production run?

I guess in the end it doesn't matter because the thing just flat out makes puts.  Not the best feeling putter, but I haven't tried anything more effective at getting the ball in the hole.  Like Bones said (more or less), when it misses the next put is a tap in.

Now that Dave has revealed the Ketsch 3.0, doing a very fair and balanced job in the process, I thought I'd add a couple more bits to the pile.

The Ketsch is my Eight Cow Woman -

Ever hear of Johnny Lingo and the Eight Cow Woman?   It's a short story by Patricia McKerr about a polynesian boy who grows up with a homely island girl named Mahana who is constantly beaten and abused by her sadistic father.   As a result Mahana has terrible self esteem.   When Johnny Lingo becomes a young man he sails away to make his fortune and then after a few years he sails back to find a wife.   All the eligible young girls vie for his attention, and all the fathers offer Johnny dowries if he'll marry them, but Johnny only has eyes for Mahana.  Her father thinks Johnny is crazy to want his mousey daughter, but he's a tough negotiator so demands 3 cows as the price to marry Mahana,  the normal price being only 1 cow.   Johnny refuses the offer, stating that he will pay no less than eight cows for Mahana -- a record amount.   The dad accepts, Johnny pays, then he and Mahana sail away to a new life.   A few years later, Johnny and Mahana sail back for a visit.  Free from her father's abuse, Mahana has blossomed into a gorgeous, confident woman, still possessing all of her humble and industrious traits she learned as a youth.  Her father sees the transformation and believes that Johnny Lingo has cheated him in the original deal.

That's how I feel about the Ketsch.   Never has such a hidden treasure been so mistreated and maligned by its father.   Eight cows is not enough for my putting Mahana.

Why the Ketsch 1.0 won the 2014 MGS test and why the 3.0 won't win in 2015

All models of the Ketsch are very easy to align and swing smoothly, but the Ketsch 1.0  also had extremely aggressive grooves and sharp ridges that really bit into the cover of a urethane ball.  We're now told this was a mistake, but IMO it caused Ketsch putts to roll in tight connection to the turf and skid less.  As a result everything tended to roll short or be greatly affected by grain and surface imperfections.   I think that this tendency was even more exaggerated with the Wilson FG Tour ball (used in the 2014 MWM test) thanks to its very soft compression and unusually sticky urethane cover.   I used the FG Tour with all of my testing and I thought Ketsch 1.0's shortness was more pronounced with it than with harder balls.

Ultimately I decided this tendency to stray and be short was a GOOD THING because I was forced to take a good sweeping follow through,in order to "push" my ball past the target to keep it on line and get it to the hole.   Guess what?  Holding this on-line sweep is exactly the textbook method for making more putts.   In essence the Ketsch 1.0 was its own training aid.   It forced the MGS testors to make a bigger sweeping finish if they wanted to get the ball to the hole.   And even when they over-cooked it, the Ketsch's shortness never left them very far past the hole.   What would have been 3 feet by with a "normal" putter, was a foot for Ketsch.

But things will change in 2015.   When you combine the firmer face of the Ketsch 3.0 with the harder Bridgestone ball, I think you'll see a little more "normal" performance out of the Ketsch in the 2015 test because the "training aid" effect will be gone, the shortness tendency will disappear and so will the need to hold the finish to help the ball past the hole.   Dispersion will increase and the Ketsch 3.0 will sink back to the middle of the pack somewhere in the top ten.   (It's still really easy to align and swing,)

Just my two bits (or should I say, "my eight cows").

The more I think about it the more I think Mark might be on to something. The feel I had with V1 was soft and V2 was harder. Even when I overcook my putt at the shop, it was always in the hole compared to the V2 where I had mixed success. At that time I attributed it to my putting rather than the putter.

Part of me regrets that I did not snap up the V1 when it was in the store but there's nothing I can do now. Just have to roll with it and perhaps wait for the Most Wanted test to validate this.

By the way, nice story Mark.

It would be interesting if we can have a side by side comparison with the V1 and Cadence versions. Just to see if anything has changed.

Perhaps MGS can help? :P
