FWYinReg 3
Hello People of MGS! I just bought a Scotty Cameron Studio Design 1 this afternoon for the greatest price of the century (which I will not share as I was sworn to secrecy by my friend who works at the golf shop). The reason why I received such a great deal on this putter was because it is a little beat up. The previous owner seems to have hit the ball off of the toe quite a lot, and it did not come with a head cover so it is a bit rusted. I will try and post pictures once my phone is working, but till then my description will have to do. The black finish on sole is wearing away, and little speckles of rust are replacing it. The back of the putter is fine, and the spin-milling on the face is still good but as I stated previously, the finish on the toe has faded away because the previous owner seems to have hit it off that side quite a bit. I looked up how much it would cost to refurbish and authenticate the putter throughscottycameron.com, but it came out to about $408.00 (S+H included) and I don't have that kind of money. So here are my questions: is there any way to get rid of the black finish and rust without destroying the spin milling on the face? I also wanted to customize the paint a little on the back, face, and sole so I figured paint stripper and a cue-tip was the best way to get rid of the stock paint, but what should I use to repaint? Thank you so much for reading, and any help is much appreciated. Cheers, Ryan Quote What's in my red Sun Mountain Swift X stand bag... FWYinReg 3
Send it to The Putter Lounge. How much would that cost though? I'm a bit short on cash as I'm trying to start playing lacrosse again, and that takes up quite a bit of money. Quote What's in my red Sun Mountain Swift X stand bag... FWYinReg 3
I just wanted to give an update on my progress with my putter. I was originally trying to remove the rust by using the old coke and tin foil trick, but I realized that the tin foil was grinding down the spin milling on the scotty, and the coca cola wasn't removing the rust as I had hoped. But then, just as I began to think all was lost, my dad came to the rescue with a magical car care spray called "A Must For Rust". I sprayed it on the back of the putter and to my amazement not only did the rust dissapear, but so did the oxidized gun metal black finish (which is what i was hoping for). So I continued to to spray it on, and found that using a little bit of tin foil to scrub off the sole, back, and sides helped a whole lot. I was able to get rid of all of the noticeable rust spots on the club, as well as all of the black finish on the club, and I cleaned up all the paint and smoothe out the back. I definately will be posting pictures as soon as my phone is charged, and I thank everyone who read and offered advice, cheers Quote What's in my red Sun Mountain Swift X stand bag... RookieBlue7 1,704
It'd be cheaper to send it to BOS, and they were Scotty's original shop that did his finishes as well as milled a lot of the earlier putters of his. It was only after the falling out as a result of the owner's son doing some shady stuff that they quit sending them a lot of the stuff that was sent in to the Custom Shop. But they still do the refinishes. And they're the best in the business to restore older Scotties to original status. As they milled a lot of the heads and finished them originally. Just saying. Do they have a website, or how would I get in touch with them? How much would it cost to get the blue oxide finish and the milling redone as well. I was only trying to remove the finish because someone had totally worn away the finish on the toe, and let it rust everywhere else so when I sprayed it down, it removed everyting. Is there any way to shine/polish it up, because at the moment it just looks like a crude steel finish. Quote What's in my red Sun Mountain Swift X stand bag... zerostate 6
You've done the difficult part...now polish it up with 0000 steel wool, degrease with an acetone rub, dry thoroughly with a microfiber cloth, then google how to do a torch/flame finish. You'll have a great putter with a unique finish and you did it yourself. RookieBlue7 1,704
Sorry, missed this. Their site is www.bosgolf.com They used to be who Scotty sent the restores too. They had a falling out due to August's son doing some shady things and stealing a tour stamp or two. Here's the story: http://legacy.utsandiego.com/news/northcounty/20031016-1514-putters.html They used to own some of the patents and did a lot of his mill work. That ceased and Scotty quit sending them refinishes. But they still do refinishes and do a phenomenal job. As far as finishes, you're going to have rust issues unless you really take a lot of time and effort to keep it clean and rust free. If you don't mind the maintenance, I'd go for it. But if you want lower maintenance, there are other finish options to explore.
