Check out Jack's narrated course flyover here...

Will be scoring live on GameBook, as well as Tweeting.  Will try to figure out how to post pictures here so I won't have to bug GolfSpy MBP to do it for me...

Looking forward to it.  You are making me want to go try it out.  Maybe next spring.

What a fun course to play!  Bear's Best does have some beast in it, but the scenery and challenge make it an enjoyable, bucket-list like track.  It's also one of those courses that after digesting the round for a while and digesting a little course knowledge, you'd really like the opportunity to go out and try it again.

Each hole is modeled after Jack's favorite holes in his courses west of the Mississippi (there's another Bear's Best in Atlanta representing holes east of the Mississippi).  The staff says the hole are as accurate as possible in terms of terrain, distance, etc.  The fact that it's in the desert, however, makes exact replicas almost impossible...

We played from the Blues - 6628 yards, 72.1/131.  Here's the blow by blow...

1. PGA West #6 - 370 yd par 4: water all along the left side of the FW, so don't go left.  I didn't - went right into the rocks OB.  Drop, hybrid over the green, indifferent chip, 2 putts for a DB.  What a start!

2. Cabo Del Sol #12 - 482 yd par 5: On in regulation, 3 putts from 30 feet. Start of a theme...

3. Desert Highlands #8 - 401 yd par 4: Pulled drive left into waste bunker, punched out into FW, about 80 yds out, approach and 2 putts for bogey.

4. Old Works Golf Club - Montana #7 - 195 yd par 3.  Cool hole, downhill with lots of black sand, just like the Montana course. They actually had the sand shipped down from Montana for this hole and one on the back 9.  Smoked a 4 hybrid to 18 feet, rolled in for the birdie!  Maybe this round can be saved...

5. El Dorado Resort, Mexico #10 - 414 yd par 4: Solid drive down the left hand side of the FW, 5 iron to the left fringe - chip & putt for par.  Yes, this round can be saved...

6. Palmilla Golf Club - Mexico, #1 - 352 yd par 4:  No, it can't...hole has a huge waste bunker running the entire left side of the FW, and then crossing to the right side right in front of the green.  Pulled drive into the waste bunker, 120 uphill to the green - didn't make it up the hill, rolled back into the waste bunker.  3rd shot into a regular bunker, sand shot and 2 putts later, another DB

7. Las Campanas, NM #13 - 184 yd par 3: Uphill, big green, muffed the tee shot, muffed the pitch, muffed the chip. Did manage to sink the 2nd putt tho...another DB.

8. Castle Pines #14 - 552 yd par 5: Beautiful downhill hole - with actual imported Castle Pines.  Drive down the right side of the FW, 2 hybrid over a creek, 56* approach to 20', 2 putts to save par.  Phew...

9. Desert Mountain #6 - 393 yd par 4: Dogleg left - slightly downhill.  Hit best drive of the day to that point - actually a little too good.  Rolled thru FW, down a rock embankment and into the first FW. That's a FW hit in my book!  8 iron to left rough, chip and two putts for bogey.

Front 9 - 44 with 1 birdie, 3 DB's and 3 bogeys.

10: PGA West #10 - 392 yd par 4: Cool looking hole with huge, deep bunker in the middle of a split fairway.  Nailed a nice drive to about 110 out and then dropped a 56* to about a foot.  Kick in birdie. Maybe...

11: Old Works Club, Montana #2 - 283 yd par 4: Short hole with green tucked to the right, protected by more black sand bunkers.  Drive wound up near the green in the rough to the left.  Left pitch short of a slope that would have run the ball toward the pin.  Two putts for par.  Maybe...

12: Bear Creak CC, California #14 - 497 yd par 5: Good drive to the FW, 2 wood pin high just to the left of the green, about 15 feet from the pin. Chip to 7 feet - birdie?  Nope - 2 putts for par. Things are looking up tho...

13. La Paloma, AZ #8 - 137 yd par 3: Short hole, hitting over desert bramble.  PW over the green, downhill chip slides 15 feet past the pin, 2 putts for bogey.  Maybe not...

14: Las Campanas #1 - 418 yd par 4: Blasted best drive of the day (299 as measured by cart GPS - LOVE that Nike Pro Driver!). Then the wheels came off.  Fatted a 56* short of the green, Tried a lob to a front pin - didn't quite make it, rolled into the bunker, out and 2 putts later we turned it into a DB.

15. Desert Mountain #5 - 211 yd par 3: 3 hybrid to 25 feet, 3 putts for bogey. Sigh....

16. Desert Mountain #4 - 392 yd par 4. Another ka-boomer - measured at 296.  Okay, it was downhill, but still...

Landed in the only divot within 20 feet - blasted long into hill over the green, dubbed the pitch, next one went 15 feet past, rolled the putt around the rim, another DB.

17. Desert Mountain #9 - 516 yd par 5: Big waste bunker along the left, which is where my tee shot went.  Fortunately, it rolled and rolled around the corner and left me with a shot at the green.  3 hybrid went pin high, but in a VERY deep bunker to the left of the green.  Blasted out to 8 feet. Birdie?  Nope- another 2 putt par.

18: PGA West #18 - 439 yd par 4: Also known as the Bataan Death March.  Lots of water on the right, with a waste bunker all the way long the water, so that when you put it in the water, you have to drop in the waste bunker (Why Jack, why???).  Lots of room to the left, but we hit it right.  Drop into the waste bunker.  3 shot goes further down the waste bunker.  4th shot to the green, two putts to finish with another DB.

Back 9: 43 with 1 birdie, 3 DB's and 2 bogeys.

Would I play this course again?  In a heart beat - except maybe for 18.  Might skip that one...

Fun looking course; nice job on the pics and good write-up. I don't think I could take that many photos and still concentrate on my game.

I was thinking the same thing. I can't make myself use golf apps on my phone while playing because it interrupts my thought process. But thanks for doing it John. Great job!
