Irons Recommendations for Pickers/Sweepers!

Happy New Year Everyone!

I think it's time for a change in the bag.  My irons haven't been behaving for me lately, so I'm looking for irons that are more suited for my picker/sweeper swing.  I rarely-to-never ever make divots.  I currently have the JPX-800 irons in the bag.  I'm a mid/high handicapper.  I usually shoot in the high 80's to 90's.

What irons would you spy's recommend I try out?

Also, I have read on forums that a thinner sole is better for a picker than a wider sole.

What are your thoughts on that?

Thank you in advance Spy's!

The sole width is a bit simplistic, I to am a picker but play Ping i20's which have quite a wide sole (well compared to what I've played before).

What type of courses do you play on most? Damp or dry - guessing dry. What problem are you having with your irons?

The jpx 800's (assuming they aren't the pro model) aren't that thin either really. But less so than true GI irons. If you go thin then you may lose the benefits of an easier to hit club....

If your able to Id grab some trial 6 irons from a pro shop and go and hit on turf, a mat won't help you for this, and go and see if the turf interaction works for you. I do find certain irons dig on me and for a picker that feels really weird! The pings took about 6 weeks to bed in.

Westy,

Thanks for the reply.

I mainly play in dry courses here in So Cal.

It's not that I have any problems with my JPX-800's (NON-Pro).  I've been thinking of getting a new set for months and I was wondering which irons are better for pickers.

The sole design should be less of an issue for a picker swing than for a digger. You should be able to get away with less bounce on all your clubs. But if they still had plenty of bounce, I doubt it would cause a problem for you.

Well if your keen on staying with Mizuno then what KY said, the JPX EZ would be worth a look. If your more flexible (go on be flexible) then try Ping i20's or i25's, TMAG Speedblades or sldr (lot of Speedblades fans on here)....or similar offerings from callway or titleist.

In short there's lots of great irons out there, most will be fine for a picker - but be sure to try them out first.....

For starters I would read five questions with T particularly the part where he questions anyone not gaming a GI iron. For seconders I'd say you game a very good GI iron now so why not start there. The trend even on tour is to go with a bit more sole. I'm a picker as well and it's never bothered me much either way except here in Florida when it's wet. Then I have prefers a little bounce.

Since we have this nice run of articles on Wilson why not take a look at their offerings? My pro is a Wilson/Mizuno guy. He wanted me in the 54s, I said, too much work, so we tried the EZs and the Wislon C100's. I liked the shaft option in the Wilson better even though I preferred the look of the Mizunos. I haven't been disappointed and I saved a few bucks.

Let us know what you settle on and good luck.

Taylor Made Stealth 2 10.5 Diamana S plus 60  Aldila  R flex   - 42.25 inches

SMT 4 wood bassara R flex, four wood head, 3 wood shaft

Ping G410 7, 9 wood  Alta 65 R flex

Srixon ZX5 MK II  5-GW - UST recoil Dart 65 R flex

India 52,56 (60 pending)  UST recoil 75's R flex

Evon roll ER 5 32 inches

It's our offseason so auditioning candidates - looking for that right mix of low spin long, more spin around the greens - TBD

Thank you for the reply's everyone.

I've tried the TM Speedblades, SLDR, Mizzy JPX-EZ, EZ Forged, JPX-850 and 850 Forged.  I still need to try the Pings.  Out of the one's I have tried so far.  I like the MIZZY's the best.  No surprise since I have Mizzy's now.  My favorites were the MP-H5's and MP-54's.  The JPX-850 Forged and JPX-800's felt good too.

The JPX-850 irons actually have the least amount of bounce.  The 4/5/6 irons have -0.5*, 7 iron has 1*, 8 iron has 2*, 9 iron has 3* and the PW has 4'.  That's considerably lower at least 2* lower than other irons. My current irons (JPX-800) have higher bounce too.  Looks like Mizuno lowered the bounce on the JPX-850 for Pickers for the GI irons.

Right now, my top 3 is MP-54, MP-H5's or JPX-850 Forged. And very close behind them is the JPX-850.  But, I will continue to try out more irons this week.

Thanks again and please keep the suggestions coming.
