Grip Pressure

Recommended Posts

My latest epiphany:

Grip pressure has been a recurring theme for me because I think it is one of the most important, yet overlooked aspects of the swing.

In the full swing I have always favored a very light grip pressure (on a 1-10 scale, I grip at about a 2). But the last few rounds this fall my putting fell off. I discovered my lightened grip pressure was bleeding into my putter stroke. Especially on shorter length putts, this was catastrophic. It was impossible to keep the face steady with such a light grip. Once I increased my grip pressure to about a 6 on a 1-10 scale, my putts began dropping with far more frequency.

There is no spoon.

This is interesting. I've been messing with my grip pressure lately while putting. The way I've ended up is having most of my grip pressure on the putter come from the last three fingers of my top hand and a light grip with the index finger and thumb as well as my bottom hand. It seems to be helping so far but I guess I'll find out in the spring when I can get out on the course more often. I can't remember where I heard it and picked it up from though.

Rather than starting a new one. I will revive this one.

I've been messing around with this. I would say I death grip the club or white knuckle it. Been lightening up and I feel like the club is moving faster, getting more spin with my wedges, and it's easier to move the ball. I'm at about a 5 with the left and a 3.5 with the right.

What's ya got for me?

I would say to play around with your grip pressure to find what is comfortable for you and provides the best results.  Generally tension is bad for the golf swing.

Think of your club as a bird. You want to grip it tight enough it doesn't fly away but not so tight that you'll kill it.

I'm not sure how this works with your putter pressure, but with full swings this is a good mindset.

If you are a player that tends to hook the ball, a little more grip pressure will keep you from closing the club face too quickly.  If you slice the ball, lighten up for more release.

Henrik strangles the club to death. Robert Streb barely holds it. I'm in the middle lol

baseball is thrown from the fingers (light grip pressure), darts are thrown from the fingers, etc. check where that grip is in your hands. Closer to the palms is like trying to throw a palm ball fast. Light grip pressure lets the clubhead naturally lag on the downswing. Just my take on it.

I too have started struggling with grip pressure. I tend to "choke the bird" with my driver and fairways which produces a terrible shot. I'm working on it on the range, but I sometimes revert back on the course. I've gone to midsize grips which helps. I just need to keep working until it's part of my swing.

I rarely give grip pressure much thought. It's just more mush to cloud the mind when playing.

I keep my putting grip pressure light as well. Light grip offer better feel to the putt especially short ones. If you grip it too hard it's more difficult to feel the short putt and almost have to put firm stroke on short putts.

My grip on my driver is a steady 5 on the left hand and an easy 2 on the right. Thar allows me to create some lag and get addl distance. My putter is always a steady 4.
